My PS2 is not reading certain disks. I own splinter cell pandora Tomorow brand new and it works fine on it but other games don't, like for example i just bought THUG2 today, brand new and it comes up disk read error every time. Also i borrowed a James Bond game from a friend and it works on his PS2 fine but it doesnt work on mine. I think the disk reader is dusty. I tried cleaning it in several ways but it still doesnt read some disks. Is there anyting i can buy or is there anyway to clean it?? Please reply to this message it is urgent.

Besides replacing your laser or buying a new PS2 probably not. But I can vouch that adjusting your laser will fix the problem about 75% of the time. So it may be complicated but it could save you at least $60. It's not as hard as it looks.

I'm sure you can find a repair shop that will do it. I've also heard of people getting sony to fix their PS2s for free, but I forgot what it is you have to tell them. Mabey someone else around here remembers? Anyone?

Sony no longer fixes them for free. They stopped doing it a couple of months ago.

Never heard of that one. I heard it was compulsory, they sold PS2s with dodgy cheap lasers and were forced to fix them as long as the warranty is still intact.

I think it is a factory defect,a certain chip on some of PS2 systems wasn't put on them making the lasers mess up.The factory screwups started from V9 and up,when a certain chip wasn't put on the consoles making laser issues. If you check out modchip installs also, the V9 systems and up have to use the Romeo installs. The Romeo install was brought to concern for laser issues. The V1-4 contain cheap lasers and V5-6.The safest version is the V7-8 consoles, but I would suggest you check your version.

All in all, it sounds good to me. You'd pay more then that at a repair shop most likely.

There is one last thing you could try. This has seemed to work on about 50% of the PS2's i have fixed.
Take the black cover off the laser, gently pull the "eye" up. Under the eye is a mirror. This tends to get dusty as well and needs to be cleaned. take a q-tip and slide it under the eye (carfully) and rub the mirror clean. Blow it out and reassemble.
I was surprised that this fixed many PS2's I worked on.
Also, try adjusting the white cog. try 3 clicks one way and see if it helps. if not, try 3 clicks the other way. Don't forget to mark the cog before you start so you can go back to the original position if nothing helps.

Yeah, that's just incase you've messed it up yourself by maybe chipping it or messing about with the insides. Either pay them to fix it, or pay someone else to fix it, or just do it yourself lol.

Why do that? I mean if he has to open it, why not fix it without spending the money.
I have fixed many PS2's, and from my experience, I'd say there is a 70% chance his PS2 is fixable without spending a dime. (except for q-tips and 90% rubbing alcohol).
