cleaning a CD and or a DVD drive

I have both a cd r rw and a dvd r rw drive seperate drives dvd can burn cd as well how do i clean these of dust etc on the lens or whatever is in there. I suspect i may damage something if i insert a generic vcd or cd cleaner cd with brushes etc on it any ideas will be very helpful and i will be greatful thanks to all those that can help in advance. This may help many others i feel i searched other places didnt find any solid advice as of yet.

Personally I use canned air by placing the nozzle inside the drive and giving it several short bursts.
