What you buy for the computer, depends on what outputs the cam has.
If it has composite outputs, you can get decent capture cards for about $100.
If it has S-video outputs, the same applies.
If it has USB, then there's different software needed.
If it has firewire, then it's different again.

Then you can either purchase a TBC device, such as the Canopus ADVC-110, or a good capture card with "Composite" (that's what those plugs are called) inputs.

Amazingly no. Capture cards (good ones) start about $75.
A good TBC will cost double that, or more.

Check the discussions regarding anolog to digital conversion/transfer.
you need something to change the anolog source tapes to digital so that your computer can use it......there are several ways to accomplish this as reboot pointed out.

I wouldn't buy anything on that page, nor would I buy from FutureShock.
Get the Hauppauge PVR-150 $99
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&...
You can find it probably at Office Depot, Staples, and BestBuy in Canada as well as many online vendors. www.ncix.com in Vancouver is where I get a lot of stuff.
Start at www.pricenetwork.ca to get the best price.

It has composite (RCA) and S-Video inputs.
You probably have composite outputs on the cam
You will need a composite to stereo micro adapter for the audio, but the video should be straight in.
The software that comes with the card will do a very nice job of capturing from composite or S-vid.
Once you get the card, take it, and your cam, to the local Radio Shack. For about $5 you'll be on the way home, ready to go.

Sorry chahal4 for jumping in,
rebootjim,
I just got the PVR 250 today but i'm having problems installing it. There is a problem with the installing the drivers for one of the video codecs. So i can't run the setup because the hardware was not installed properly. Have you come across this problem before? I'm going to have a real good at this problem tomorrow.
Thanks

When you plug in the card, and start the computer, it should prompt you for the dirver location (the CD you got with it).
Just browse to that folder, and it should install.
It sometimes takes 2 restarts to get it all working.
You don't necessarily need the video codec included. You may already have one or two on your system, that will work as well.
Check the forums at www.shspvr.com for proper reinstallation instuctions, and follow them.
It'll work. :)

Thanks for that info, that site is really good,
but one comment made me think, someone said that the pvr 150 is better than the 250, is that the case? If so I will reurn my pvr 250 tomorrow and swap it for 150.
Thanks

Don't believe it.
The 250 is the workhorse. Tried and true, and it simply works.
The 150 is cheaper, because it only has one chip, instead of two, thus cheaper to make, but with the latest drivers (from shspvr.com) it's OK, but still not great (IMHO).
The 250 can do CC's, the 150 cannot. The 250 is easier to tweak (in most areas) the 150 only has a couple of tweakable settings.
The 250 is supported by a multitude of 3rd party software, the 150 is just starting to get support, and many programs are still a bit buggy.

phew,
Thats good to here, but whats CC's?
I'm going to try and install it again now, so i'll let you know how I get on. I might run the HCWClear file and see if that works, will me running this affect my other codecs?
Thanks

CC's = closed captions. You may think you don't need them, but they are also used for commercial detection and removal. Without them, it's much more difficult.
HWClear only removes the Hauppauge stuff from the registry.
Also make sure you uninstall the "Intervideo SDK for Hauppauge"!

Try a few TV captures in the inbetween.
If the quality isn't what you expect, there's lots of tweaks you can use.

I have been capturing some footage through the tv and its quality is ok. But sometimes the sound crackles (like when you put the volume really load) Have you come across this problem before? I don't think its the reception as i have connected through my cable tv box.
Do you get pixles when your running in TV mode?
Thanks

Regarding the original question - camcorder to DVD: Don't make it too complicated - you do not need a COMPUTER for this task at all! I have a Emerson EWR20V4 VHS/DVD recorder from Wal-Mart (about $250) which I use to dub VHS tapes to DVD. You can also connect a camcorder output to the recorder input. Away you go. There is an extensive forum on this machine on afterdawn at
