During gameplay of my backup I am getting the following message; "Error Reading Disk Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas". I am still able to play my backup, but this freeze and hesitation makes the game tough to play. I also have problems with Tiger Woods 2005. With that one I have long loading times and the music during the menu screens frequently skips, but the actual gameplay is perfect. This is my burn method:

Hardware- Sony DRU-710A DVD +/- R/RW
Media- Fuji DVD-R 8x (manufacturer ID: ProdiscF01) I burn @ 1x
DVD Decryptor- ISO/read - ISO/write @ 1x
Swap Magic 3.6 and Flip Top PS2 V10

One thing I did notice about my blank DVD media through DVD decryptor is that, under the disk information pane, the supported write speed for the disk are 4x, 6x, and 8x. Does that mean that the disk won't recognise write speeds below 4x and defaults to 4x instead of 1x? Is it my media that's causing my disk read errors? These are the only 2 games I have backed up and don't want to create too many more coasters and I haven't read too many other folks having these problems with these two games. Any help is appreciated.

Try burning at 4x although DVD Decrypter may be already burning at 4x as your disks dont support 1x.

@gajake15,

Here are my top quality media(s):

FUJI 8X DVD+R (made in Japan)
Verbatim 8X DVD+R (made in Singapore)
MAXELL 8X DVD+R (made in Japan)
SONY 8X DVD+R (made in Japan)
TDK 8X DVD+R (made in Japan)

The FUJI DVD-R you're using was made by cheap manufacture aka prodisc. I highly recommended you to get the FUJI DVD+R and make sure it says "MADE IN JAPAN" - the Manufacture ID Code should be: YUDEN000 T02. I've backed up over 25 PS2 games using FUJI 8X DVD+R -- they all played flawlessly without any freezing or issue what-so-ever.

Yes, I have the "Sony DRU 710A BYX4 (current firmware)" and I backed up at 8X with DVD Decrypter using FUJI 8X DVD+R (made in Japan) - it played and loaded flawlessly. According to my understanding, any PS2 version 5 - 10 should read any DVD+R easily. On the other hand, you can change the "book type settings" to "DVD-ROM" if you're backing up any DVD+R media on DVD Decrypter - this will be more compatible with your PS2, if you can with the settings.

To Change "Book Type Settings" using "SONY DRU 710A" on DVD Decrypter:

01) put in original game or movie in dvd-rom drive
02) open up DVD Decrypter
03) go to TOOLS, DRIVE, Change Book Type
04) go to "LITE-ON"
05) change for: arrow it down to (drive DVD+R/+R DL media)
06) new settings: arrow down to (DVD-ROM), then click on "CHANGE"
07) it should says "SUCCESS", click OK and OK --presto...that's it.

Hope this help you a little, if not a lot.

Update: I tried verbatim DVD-R 8x and my GTA:SA backup copy was worse than my previous backup burned on fuji DVD-R 8x (both burned at 1x). I needed some more DVDs, so buying 50 was needed anyway.
I guess I'll try fuji DVD+R and see if I get better results. The problem there is that 25 disks cost $15.00 and 50 disks are $20. Yeah I'll use up the DVDs over time, but I would like to find a solution to my PS2 backups first.
I have re-ripped the game onto my hard drive, so I don?t the rip is my problem. I've made 4 coasters so far for GTA:SA.

Try burning at 4x. That might sort the problem.

If the actual burn speed is 4X that should be right for an 8X disc, that is what mine do. If you want to burn at slower speeds then get a few 4X discs and try those. I know i backed mine up on Philips 8X DVD-R and it worked just fine using DVD Decrypter.
Also If any programs are running in the backround i would shut them down. Stuff like antivirus software and stuff. That use to cause me some audio/video problems.
But you have a top notch burner so it should work.
I have the year before's model DRU-700A and love it.
You may also want to try rebuilding the ISO which sometimes helps with slow load times, not sure why but i know it worked for me on MX VS ATV when the load times were horrible but the gameplay was fine.

Update 2: I backed up the original game again onto my hard drive and wrote the GTA:SA iso file onto a verbatim DVD-R @ 4x (even though during the burn the burn rate never exceeded 1.4x according to the status pane on DVD decryptor). Still no good. Something is not right. I've tried the verbatim DVD-R twice and made 2 coasters. I'm going to try some cheap DVD+Rs that I bought a while back from microcenter (paltinum series 8x media) and see what happens. If this doesn't work, I don't know?

-----------

Dell 4600
Sony DRU-710A BYX4 DVD burner
Verbatim DVD-R and Fuji DVD-R
DVD Decryptor- iso read, iso write @ 4x
PS2 Flip top, swap magic 3.6
Frustrated.

@gajake15,

What version is your PS2 by chance? If yours is a version 5 or newer, then I would at least try to back it up at anywhere from 4X - 8X with some "FUJI DVD+R 8X and MAXELL DVD+R 8X (made in Japan)". The reason I said this, is that my nephew has an older PS2 version 5 US model and I've backed up with 4X and 8X in the past for him using FUJI DVD+R & MAXELL DVD+R, and he's playing his backed up games flawlessly.

Other thing to look for is the book type settings. I know for sure that you can change the "book type settings" on DVD Decrypter with that SONY DRU 710A of yours by clicking on "LITE-ON".

To Change "Book Type Settings" using "SONY DRU 710A" on DVD Decrypter:

01) put in original game or movie in dvd-rom drive
02) open up DVD Decrypter

I've downloaded isobuster and cdvd gen. What do I do to "rebuild" the iso and what does rebuilding it do?

Update 3-
I borrowed some backup games from a friend of mine to test them in my PS2 and guess what; they skipped and loaded very slowly. Just like my backups I made of GTASA on my burner. These same games played flawlessly on his PS2 (V7) and played poorly on my PS2 (V10). Is there a problem with my laser or do I just have bad luck?
Should I try cleaning my laser or replacing it?

if this is ur first time and ur ahvign trouble did u pull the white disc with magent from ur ps2 and put it in ur fliptop? i think that is ur problem. if ur ps2 makes weird noises...which ur skipping problem is what i think the problem is with the magnet.

you shouldnt go buy more media to solve your problem.you already bought enough media to determine its not a media problem(burners shouldnt have that much problems with different media).try cleaning your ps2 lens.and check to see if you installed your flip top properly.a good thing to do is see if someone will let you try your backups with your swap magic on their ps2.and see if they work.since you dont have a slide card, you could either try to make a homemade slide card or if theyre cool with it you could take off the ps2 cover and insert it manually.you got a fliptop so you are capable of doing that harmlessly im sure.and its just to test the game to see if its your ps2 thats the problem.

Red Dead Revolver works fine. Should I use a standard CD/DVD lens cleaner?

you could.but alcohol and a cotton swab works best.since you have a fliptop all you have to do is pop the top and clean the lens.remember to squeeze the excess out of the swab(you want a damp swab not soaked).give the lens a few gentle swipes then use the dry end of the swab and swipe a few times to dry.you dont want to get alot of moisture in the lens(alcohol drys real fast).then try out your game.you can repeat process again if it still isnt right but after that it should be as clean as you can get it.

here is a link that may help you, you may have to clean or adjust your laser. There is a link to a page on my site for fixing your PS2. It has really good directions for adjusting and cleaning the laser. I would have linked you directly to it but you also asked about rebuilding, and i also have a tutorial there about that. So i figured you could read up on a few things.
http://home.earthlink.net/~moderator/id4.html

Laser problems can be funny, (not haha funny) but in the sence that some games will play fine, and others..especially GTA games will not because they are very graphically intense and need your laser to read it correctly to work. I had that problem with my old V5, it would play some games fine and others would have problems and still others like Vice City would not play at all. I adjusted the laser and it worked fine. But if you start to get to the point where you have to adjust it often then just get yourself a new laser. I still have it in my closet to one day get around to replacing the laser in it, but wsince i have the working V7 and the V12 with DMS4 Pro chip it's not that urgent.
