But once the hard drive is formated in the PS2 format by one of these other tools, can it be detected by the HD utility that comes with the hard drive?
I want the new socom map, not play games off of the hard drive.

From what I've read, yes, SOCOM II will recognize the HD in single-player mode, but you can't get online and play with it.
I really believe someone will write a utility that will let you download the new maps on a standard non-ps2 hard drive eventually.
The only question is.. can I wait long enough for it? $99 sure is a lot of dough for an add-on map!

Yeah guys i'm guessing someone will put the ATAD formatting onto somekinda media for non-chippers.
a thought: you think they might release the game in a new edition with the map on the disc? if so you could trade in your old and get that version on ebay or somewhere cheap, better than shelling out for the HDD!! i think you lot are crazy to even consider paying 99 dollars for a single map.
aye just my 2 pence, soz if its totally arse and u can only download the map :( good luck to you all!

Yeah thats the trick. Im not paying 100 beans for a hard drive technology that is being discontinued nor 100 beans for 3 freaking maps!
Sony screwed thier costomer base big time by promising a hard drive then dumping it just as fast as it came out! Imagine your PS2 going bad and purchasing a new PS2 without the hard drive bay. What happens to those that have already invested into the hard drive? What happens to those people playing final fantasy online and cant play that game anymore becuase SONY removed the hard drive bay on the new slim PS2?
Freaking Idiots!
I know people are ripping games and putting them on the hard drive but damn this realy blows. Also I hear Xbox will be removing its hard drive because memory cards has a better cash value for them!
Uh man this gaming is getting ugly! We will never see the hard drive in future models again!

I guess the only way to get the new socom map is to buy the original hdd because oddly i happen to have the same exact hdd the sony puts in the ps2's (instead of saying sony all over it it says maxtor all over it) if you format it with the ps2 software and everything it will work, but not when you have to turn the modchip off for online gaming. sony must have there own encrypted file format on it, or something else stupid on it. it stinks because I don't want to pay 100 bucks for the original.

In reply to a couple of statements made about not being able to play a copy of SOCOM2 online......wrong. I used Stomp RecordNOW MAX to burn my copy. I patched the file before burning to disc wich allows DNAS to recognize the disc as an original. Not sure if I can post the method here or not so just do a search "patching socom2" on google and you will get a load of info on how to do this. Method works for all online games.

I have been wondering if you use a product like Symantec's Ghost to take an image of an official Sony PS2 Hard Drive out of the box, if you could put that image on a standard non-ps2 hard drive?
For anyone who has the official Hard Drive, do you have to do anything to it out of the box to "register" it with your system? I'm wondering if each hard drive has a CD, sort of like how the network adapter had a CD, that would "stamp" it with a certain code. That would make it unique and maybe the reason we can't download maps with it?

Ok, you've gotten online with a non-Sony hard drive. But have you downloaded the new map, After Hours, to this hard drive, and have you played online with it?
That is the question we all want to know. If so, please, please, post some easy 1-2-3 steps of how to go about doing this! You would be a hero!

Thanks. I will try that when I can. Yesterday I just joined ps2ownz.com and it looks like I have to wait 5 days to download two files that I do not have:
Disc ID Insertor V2.01
Disc ID Insertor
Unless anyone here has them that could post them.

When you first open the $ony hdd it comes preinstalled with all there software i can try to copy that to an empty hdd, because it cant just only work with just that "FFXI" hard drive because sooner or later some other company is going to make "off-brand" one, Right?? It has to be something with software.

we are not about burning cd/dvd or modding our ps2. we are not about putting are full games onto the hard drive. all we want is a way to make a normal ide/eide hdd to act like a $ony ps2 hdd. agen read the first thread. thats what we are about. it has went off track. im new at this but is there a way for someone to delete the stuff that is not a part of this thread. thank you and i hope not to piss anyone off.
