I rented GTA San Andreas from blockbuster and copied & burned it using DVD Decrypter & i have completed around 11 per cent of the game (around 15 missions complete) and the game has played EXACTLY like an original disc would, no jumps or pauses. I boot up using Swap Magic DVD 2.0 and use Piodata RITEK GO5 discs. Hopefully the rest of the game will flow smoothly as well.

Mcnoodle, the graphics dissapearing happens on the real disc to. A friend has told me when I mentioned my backup.

The loading times, yeah, coming out of CJ's house seems to take ages to load and other select places are the same. I think the long loading is because it's a burn.

The game has never froze completely. It freezes for like 2 seconds but the reason being is becuase the game around, ie scenery and textures for buildings are loading. That takes about 2 seconds and a box flashes up real quick, I managed to catch what it said... it says loading, and that happens on hte real disc and its rare.

The other error that is rare is when it freezes for a wee while and u get a message.. error reading gtasa disc, after that however it starts right back up again.

So the errors dont really hinder gameplay, maybe the graphics dissapearing does but as that happens on the real disc and it happens because as I said it freezes and says loading... so it's sweet.

I have a simular problem w/ My PS2 as you. I have one of the first versions and I get a "disc read error" when I try to watch a burned DVD, but my friend used the same program/media to create a DVD and it plays fine.

One suggestion was to have the laser calabrated. You said your friend had his cleaned but it may also have been re-alighned. Since mine and yours is older w/ more use the laser may be having a difficult time focusing on the data.

I have found plenty of do-it-yourslef calibration guides but I have not tried that because it require taking the machine appart, but I would be courious to know if this fix will work!

sorry to bring up an old thread but I too am recently experiencing problems with my GTA SA copy. Unfortunately I am at college so I cant get to my original one to see if I can rip it again and burn another copy. The thing w/ mine is that I burned a copy on Imation DVD-R and it worked flawelessly for a long time. In other words I was able to finish the whole game but in the end it said only 65% of the game was finished so I decided to take the game on again. This time though everytime I play the game in about 5-7 mins the game just freezes on me. I have a ps2 (50001 model assuming v7+) and using SwapMagic disks. The only difference I know is that I have a little scratch or a deep smudge on the disk which I have no idea how it got on there. You guyz think its coz of that the game is not working as it used to before. Any thoughts or help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

All PS2 are different. Sounds odd but its true. Each laser has been used for different amounts of time so there is different wear and tear on each PS2 of even the same version. Try using the best media you can buy and burn slowly. I burned GTA4 on a Ritek G05 disk, Benq 4X disk and finally a Maxell 8X. The ritek and Benq disk all gave me the same problem of freezing and slow loading times. The Maxell was burned at 2X and it works fine. No freezing and loads very fast. They are all from the same image file. Therefore, i have concluded that MY PS2 likes Maxell's better than Ritek or Benq(all my ritek and Benq back-ups are giving me problems from time to time, but when I pop in the Maxell back-up, it works right away).

So my suggestion is to burn slowly on the best media you can find. However, you will have ot experiment on what YOUR PS2 likes.

My PS2 is a version 5 with a Duo 2 SE chip.

It just tells you how to clean your ps2 thoroughly. These guys are so sure their procedure will work that if it doesn't, they'll give you your money back.
Thanks for all of you guys' help, I found that the problem was my swap magic disc. it has a little blemish on the tracks. It still loads the games after a couple of attempts.

Another thing my Ps2 does not like or any of my DVD players are those stupid sticky labels. I have now switched to inkjet printables. I hope these are better. Most of my movies pixelate and freeze at the end now after a few months of having the labels on. I experiemented and removed the labels and they work again.

For the PS2, I backed up a copy of killzone on Benq media and labelled it. it worked for a few days then it took forever to load and then stopped loading. This is because the adhesive on the label was slightly warping hte disc as it dried. I removed the label and it works fine now. Go figure huh? SO if anyone is labelling their disc with sticky labels, be careful.

I find that I get problems when playing burnt games at 2X, this often happens, so I decided to Burn ALL my PS2 Games at 1X As I seem to have a higher success rate when burning at 1X.

Hope This Helps..
