ScubaPete, utapau is correct. It is different than ARccOS - it would have to be or Sony would sue Settec for patent infringement.
Lightning UK has provided me with a PSL that allows DVD Decrypter to rip the Oldboy disc, and the change will be in a future version of DVD Decrypter. However, the ripped files still contain copy protection which makes it difficult / impossible for most processing tools to work with them.
Oldboy is a great, great movie, but it's not for everybody. It's a revenge tale that's operatic, disturbing, and darkly funny, but with a weird comic book sensibility (it was adapted from a Japanese manga). Chances are you'll love it or hate it. It's going to be released in the US this year.
If you're looking to pick up a copy, I recommend DVDAsian (it's a Region 3 NTSC disc from South Korea):
It sure explains why I couldn't locate it anywhere through my regular sources. It looks like I may like it :)
I would LOVE to see what little supprises they've cooked up for us this time (lol).
Can't wait to see how they'll attempt (if they ever try at all) to launch their "baby" encryption. That's the one where 1 encryption is on the disc and the second one is in the player. Yes to play releases with this encryption everyone will have to have a new player. Of course with the new "Blue-tooth" add on, they'll have to get a new player anyway.
Anyway, too much new stuff on the horizon -
I guess we'll wait until that DVD makes it's way around to this side of the pond -
Zippyd, that's likely the Oldboy Special Edition, the tipoff (besides the price) being the DTS track. The SE was the only version of Oldboy released with a DTS track. Yes folks, they released a Special Edition, an Ultimate Edition, and a Final Edition! Only the Ultimate Edition and the Final Edition have Alpha-DVD protection (but no DTS track, go figure).
Plus if you look at the sellers for that item, most of them have one-disc or region free versions, which are definitely bootlegs. However, the only ones selling legit copies at Amazon are offering the Final Edition (comes w/ a 20 page book). That could be an option for those that want to order it to look at the copy protection, though I still recommend DVDAsian (they're located in California).
The "book" is just a pamphlet really, very flimsy, and is in Korean anyway. As far as the price goes, i have not seen it cheaper than $26.95 anywhere else. It is also very doubtful they will come out with yet another Korean version of this film, given that we have 3 already. I guess we'll have to wait until another, cheaper disc using this same protection comes out...(no problem waiting since both ehonauer and I own our discs anyways). Thanks for all your help all the same!
The most important change is the support for Settec ALPHA-DVD, a new DVD protection developed in Korea.
- New: Added support for the "Settec ALPHA-DVD protection" as found on "Old Boy - Final Edition" (Korea) to the option to remove "Protection based on unreadable Sectors"
- New: Added names of protection (Arccos, Puppetlock, ALPHA-DVD) to information window.
- New: Added Video Standard to information window
- New: Added option to deactivate the CSS key archive
- Change: Filesystem locking, to fix problems with autoplay
