anubis1,

It's hard to say what the problem is when you get an I/O error as this could be hardware, software, or resource issues; however, have you tried ISO mode with DVD Decrypter? I have seen similar issues where File mode failed with an I/O error, but ISO mode didn't.

I know this does not address the I/O error, but all I can suggest there is grass roots. What I mean by that is checking the basics: defrag, latest Windows updates, checking to see if there are any known firmware issues or possible updates (rule of thumb, only update the dvd-+r/w firmware if you must, sometimes an update there can compound issues).

If you are able to post a more detailed error, there may be some clues in there that can shed more light on a possible cause.

Justed used the latest version of Decrypter to Write to an ISO file..and then used DVDShrink to read the ISO file and reauthor it. Worked like a charm!

If you want just the movie you can get 100% no compression...

silly encryption...someone will always find a way around it!

Superdvdcopy, along with DVD Shrink- worked on this one. It's the only movie superdvd worked since resident evil apocalype.Luckily i still have the free trial. It isn't worth buying this program.

As mentioned before. AnyDVD + Shrink works perfect!

There are plenty of choices.. this works best for me. not memory errors, no I/O errors. your set. If you like shrink just think of AnyDVD as an add on.

I know most of those programs are free, but damn they take way too long to use. I spent 30 bucks at best but got ICOPYDVDs2 and DVD43, used DVD43 in conjunction with AnyDVD, and it took 20 minutes total, read and burn time... It worked with forgotten.. first time. So while you guys are waiting for dycrypter to load the dvd image on your HD I'm watching my copy right now

Yes I've read the above posts.

I've been using DVD Decrypter and Nero recode to successfully backed up my DVDs. This is the first problem I ran into backing up the Grudge. I have the latest version of DVD Decrypter. What is the difference between decrypting in FILE mode or ISO mode. I thought it is just your preference and does not affect decryption. Is using ISO mode more advanced? Or are you guys that successfuly backed this up using any special settings? I just use the default setting. I'll try it again in ISO mode later.

If Shrink is locking up on you in file mode, try this.

make an ISO in Decrypter, then use another program called Daemon Tools (another freebie) to open the ISO file. It will mount it as a virtual drive. then just point Shrink to that drive.

There could possibly be a bug in Shrink that makes it freeze in file mode. This mode will work around it.

We did a test of the latest versions of AnyDVD 4.5.7.1, DVD Decrypter 3.5.2.0 and DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 with The Grudge. DVD Shrink could not do it by itself; however, using either AnyDVD or DVD Decrypter we were able to perform a successful rip, decryption and burn. The AnyDVD and DVD Shrink combo was the simplist and quicker approach with just one pass-through of the DVD data. You run AnyDVD in the background and DVD Shrink does its job with the final result being the finished DVD-/+R version of the original DVD. The DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink combo requires that the DVD data be processed by each program. DVD Decrypter processes the DVD data to the hard disk at full length, then DVD Shrink processes that data from hard disk to create another hard disk DVD data group sized to fit on DVD -/+R disks and finally the burn. This virtually doubles the process time, but the cost of buying AnyDVD may be a factor to some. Also, when we processed our copy of RE2 with an earlier version of DVD Decrypter. It required the importing of a Protected Sectors List file to sucessful perform the decryption; however, the latest version did not. It looks like a dollar issue which path you take. Being a fan of DVD Shrink, I would almost bet that future versions of this product will incorporate the additional processes needed to make the experience seamless to the DVD archievist.

I like to make ENTIRE DISC BACKUPS and NONE of the afore mentioned things have been successful in doing that. I do now own 6 backups of the main movie. LUCKY ME!

Ok, i'm probably doing something wrong, since I'm not used to using AnyDVD or DVD Decrypter, but neither of those methods have worked for me. i tried decrypter in file mode and iso mode, so could someone please tell me all the settings like things i may need to check off in preferences in decrypter to make this work, i downloaded DVD Decrypter 3.5.2.0, and when its finishing up it has errors that it cant bypass, is this supposed to happen or what could i be doing wrong?

thanks in advance for any help i can get

I have copied the entire DVD by ripping to hard drive with Decrypter in file mode, then compressing with Shrink and burning with Nero 6 Ultra Edition. You can keep everything with Shrink if you choose - you will just have a higher rate of compression. If you reauthor that is when you lose your menu. However, if you just open your files from the hard drive with Shrink and then choose to backup, you will have your menu and all other features. I usually keep my menu also, but compress the extras by choosing "still pictures" so that the movie will be compressed less. As I rarely view the extras, it doesn't matter (it will insert .05 sec still picture). There is a 5 page thread for "The Forgotten" on AfterDawn that should answer any questions anyone has about "The Grudge" as the same encryption scheme is used on both. Whether you use the software I mentioned (newest version of Decrypter and DVD Shrink) or AnyDVD, both methods are mentioned on "The Forgotten" thread along with other problems - most issues have already been discussed and solutions listed there (make sure you go to the one that has 5 pages). The question about Decrypter settings may have been answered on the other thread.

wow..thanks, I have failed Forgotten to rip and I had given up. I am ripping the Grudge. DVD Shrink gave me CRC error and 1st stage analyis. Tried DVD Decryptor and it gets read error at 16%. Read this forum downloaded the new Decrypter and now it passed to 35 %. I hope it finishes. I am doing it on ISO mode. Do I need to do it in VOB/VOD mode??

I had problems ripping Grudge, Forgotten and Resident Evil 2. After reading all these posts, I downloaded the newest version of Decryptor and AnyDVD4.5.7.2. With AnyDVD running in the background, I ripped it with Shrink, removed the unnecessary foreign languages, and burned it with Decryptor. I didn't reauthor anything (to only burn the actual movie) and successfully burned the entire disc.
If this doesn't work for you, then use decryptor > mode > file. Burn it to the hard drive, and finish with Shrink. All the while having AnyDVD running.

I gotta reorder the Forgotten and Resident Evil 2. Here's hoping this'll work for that.

The Grudge was able to be successfully burned using the newest version of AnyDVD 4.5.7.2. Wasted 8 blank dvds using the previous version because it gave sector problems everytime with different ripping programs. I'm a happy camper now.

Using AnyDVD, DVD Shrink & burning with Nero6 = 50 minutes at 8x.

Using DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink & burning with Nero6 = 62 minutes at 8x.

12 Minutes difference, not double the time.

I too prefer AnyDVD whenever possible.

hey dv. There will probably be no new version of Shrink. Rumor has it that the guy who wrote shrink is now working for Nero.

From our earlier post, "We did a test of the latest versions of AnyDVD 4.5.7.1, DVD Decrypter 3.5.2.0 and DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 with The Grudge." and "This virtually doubles the process time" regarding the DVD Decrypter/Shrink combo vs. AnyDVD/Shrink combo. One must consider the time spent setting up the first app, the second app, the in between time and through to the DVD burn. Virtually doubling the time is reasonable. We just completed another test with "Friday Night Lights" which exhibits the same encoding problems. For the combo of AnyDVD and DVD Shrink, time 101:00. For the combo of DVD Decrypter 49:03 and DVD Shrink 74:19. Both had the French language button deactivated. Surprisingly DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink 3.2 had a problem completing and generated an error message: "DVD shrink has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL". Then we fired up DVD Shrink 2.3 and it completed as expected. The combo of AnyDVD and DVD Shrink 3.2 got stuck cycling at the begin of DVD Shrinks process, but finally released after a few minutes and completed its processing. We followed it up with a DVD Shrink 2.3 test, with no cycling at the beginning and completed as expected. Anyway that is it from here.
