wolfniggr - I see that the Plextor 716A does not support bitsetting for DL disks (according to the review I read). Is that going to be a problem for me?

Only if your DVD player/s don't like +R/RW media. If that's the case, go with -R/RW discs. Just so you know, -R DL media is on the horizon.

Thanks for the explanation. All of my players play +R/RW media like they were born to. Over 800 backups to date with +R media (I keep my original collection in a fire proof safe).
The only problems I've had with +R media were due to poor quality discs. The Sony 8x I use now are flawless.

Wolf I have checked for firmware updates and there are none.I have also checked for driver updates and they are up to date as well.(I dont know if this has anything to do with this)
Tried to burn a DL dvd in iso mode with decryptor the other day with the same result as before.
Please help.
Sorry Babakt for hijacking your post.

Would ISO mode really be different from "File" mode in DVD Decrypter? I can understand what people are saying about Decrypter removing some items and changing the exactly where the layer break would go, but wouldn't the program do this in both file and iso modes?

In order to burn with decrypter, you have to have an iso image. It won't burn in file mode, unless you use another program(burning rom). If you follow rotary's steps in the link I posted earlier in the thread, the layer break isn't an issue.
As for mervinj, didn't you post another thread about having issues with single layer discs, too. Have you tried defragging your hard drive/s? How are your backups turning out now?

Funny you should say that Wolf....I defragged the hard drive and did a clean up.I also got hold of some Maxell discs. The backups are now perfect.
Why is defragging an issue??
I am also going to wait on a better quality DL media here downunder.
A lot of shops wont stock it because it costs to much.Vicious circle really. If they dont buy it then the prices wont come down.
Just have to be patient I suppose.

I'ts a good idea to defrag on a regular basis if you make a lot of backups. When you delete the files after your done burning, your hard drive will have a lot of gaps after a while making it work harder and more likely to give you hiccups in the encoding process. I like to defrag after 5 burns. Hopefully with the growing number of manufactures now making +R DL media and the comming of -R DL, the price will start to fall a little faster. Like I've been saying in a couple of posts, I already noticed a 16% price drop in the last couple of months. As soon as the next firmware update for my burners is available, I will test out the -R DL media.

Memorex has just released DVD+R DL. They are about half the price of Verbatims as well.

C'mon, are you really gonna f**k with memorex? Try the fuji, mitsubishi(if you can find them),ritek or stick with verbatim, but memorex. Why bother? I saw these a month and a half ago (made in taiwan)and never even considered them as an option.

Amazon.com has a pretty good deal on 3pks of Verbatim DL. You can get an $8.00 rebate on each pack (expires soon). I think they may have just increased the price a bit in the last week, but still a pretty good deal.

My $0.02 about DVD+R DL media. After making five shiny coasters with the 5-pack RiData DVD+R DL media, I can definitely say my Plextor PX-716A does not like RiData discs.
Before anyone asks, I do have the latest firmware on the drive, I rip and burn with DVD Decrypter (I have the latest version of that, too), I have tried changing every setting possible - different write speeds, different booktype settings and so forth, but everytime the program stops at the verification step with messages about unrecoverable I/O errors. The same thing happened when I tried to burn an ISO image with Roxio (OK, OK, I understand that is not the best option, but I just tried it out all the same...).
This problem has never occurred with single layer Ritek G04 or G05 discs, and with my other Plextor, the PX-708A. I have run diagnostics on the 716A, and it works out fine.
I am going to try out Verbatime DL media. The Piodata DL media seem to be out of stock everywhere I looked. I would not touch Memorex media with a ten-foot long bargepole, I have enough problems already...

I personally think vebatims DL media have been the most compatible. I think the manufacturers of dl burers have this media at the top of their lists. I also suggest(my opinion) you burn these discs at 2.4x regardless of your burner's capability.

I bought the verbatim DVD_R DL 3-pack. I have used one till now, and it has worked perfectly (DVD decrypter Write mode, 2.4X fixed write speed). I am keeping my fingers crossed; I will have to test more before I can say with confidence that this works. FYI, this media is actually made by Mitsubishi as per DVD Identifier.
