first, I'd like to thank you for all of your help!

second, when I was saying I burned something before just as "fancy" - well, I took a second look at that movie - it's not nearly as complicated in terms of menu buttons and options - which, of course takes up memory.

I took your advice and already purchased some 8X TAIYO YUDEN WHITE INKJET HUB PRINTABLE DVD-R's (sorry for the caps - I copied and pasted). It was costly, but i'll pay anything for great quality - now....what to do with the 35 or so imations that I have left....actually, they seem to work fine for small projects...so...I guess i'll use them for the small stuff.

The sony's.... SONY000000U9 (that is written next to the manufacturer and media code) - what does that mean? I don't understand that...

is there a place where I could learn what about media codes and which ones are better and so on? you seem to know a lot about that....probably on this website right?

so, Memorex is bad also...huh...I always thought that was a good brand.

yes, I can use +R - I had NO idea that I could...I can use +R and +RW - are they better? I'd use them because I know my dvd player will play that format, however, I make a lot of projects for other people - and isn't that less compatible than -R?

Ok I will try to answer your questions to the best of my ability and knowledge. Don't quote me as I don't know it all. I've researched some and learned some from experience.

You can either keep the imations as they should work ok for data backup although I don't recommend useing them for any of your vidio files as you found out. You probably got them pretty cheap since they are a generic brand or just toss em. Don't feel bad I tossed about the same amount of memorex (media code cmc mag) when I was first learning.

The sony's are actually made by sony as reported by the MID code. I am suprised you have any problems with them as genuine sony's are usually descent media. Maybe a f/w update will help. Hope you found an update.

Here is a link to a good media guide. It is a little out of date but still pretty accurate. http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

The problem with memorex is that they buy their media from several different manufactures (some pretty good, ricohjpn, ritek and some bad, cmc mag, infodisc) and you never know what your going to get untill you get em home and id em.

There's a lot of contraversy in regards to +r or -r media. -r used to be more compatable with set top dvd players, and still are with older players but the +r seem to be more compatable with the newer players. I use only +r main reason being, and I won't get to specific as I doubt your dvdrw is capable of doing so, because I booktype all my burns as dvd-rom (most compatable of the formats and can only be done to +r media and not-r yet at least). Some drives are capable of doing this and some aren't. Lite-ons (thats what I have), NEC, Plextor, most sonys and most memorex drives will. Pioneer I know will not. That's why I'm not a pioneer fan although I believe they perform well with -r media. There's some others that will but I'm not familiar with them. You could research your drive and see if it does.

I really like ricohjpn media but it is not sold under their name that I know of. It is +r media only and is most commonly found under the Ritek Ridata name though not always as Ritek makes their own +r media too. Other companys buy their media as well. Whew, hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions or problems. I think you will be happy with the Taiyo Yuden's.

yes, that helps a lot - and I had no idea about any of the manufacturer details - I saw "memorex" and thought "They are usually great..." - so basically, regardless of brand name - you never know if you got a good spindle or a bad one....that's not cool.

I will do more research - I thought I was pretty advanced - guess not...

If I get my hands on a +R, i'll give it a shot....and see what happens.

So, with the Taiyo Yuden's, I should be ok - GREAT - i'll be much happier with high quality media. no more error messages and all of that.... so i'll be able to copy from an -RW to a Taiyo Yuden with no problem (more than likely)....I do that to reduce the coaster rate...haha.

I'll let you know how things work out with the new media - should have it in about a week.

Thanks Mort81

Glad I can help. If you ever decide to try some dvd+r's or even some other brand of dvd-r's, you can get some sample packs from meritline.com, some with free shipping. If you need anymore rw's I would recommend Sony dvd+r's. I bought a 10 pack and still have 6 that have never been used because I can keep overwriting the 4 I'm useing. The burns still look and perform as well as the first time I used em. They are sony branded but the media code is phillips 041.

If you want to try some good budget media I recommend Ritek Ridata dvd+r's. They can usually be had for less than 50 cents per disk and sometimes, depending on where you buy them, free shipping. My last 100 pk cost 34 cents per disc shipping included. I usually buy from Newegg or meritline but some other places are Supermediastore and Rima.

If I am not mistaken that burner is made by Lucky Goldstar out of South Korea. Although a large worldwide supplier, they have never been known to be at the top of the quality heap.

hmm...yeah, the burner came with my computer - the next computer I buy - i'll know more, and be more careful...I have had it for 2 years now...

I'm anxious to find out how these new dvd's I bought will work - I hope they get here fast. So basically, the Imations work - but you can't really put more than an hour on them otherwise they get screwed up....i'm assuming the Taiyo Yuden's are much better for the type of thing i'm doing...should I be worried that they won't work? I know nobody can predict the future...haha...I just hate it when things aren't going right with my computer.

The burner if you check, is an LG, which makes some decent equipment. That might help you in looking for the firmware upgrade if one is available.

As far as the ricohjpn coded media by Ricoh, they do sell the discs under their own generic brand. However most of the Ricoh media on the shelves are under other brands. Verbatim, Ritek-Ridata, Imation, Fuji, Maxell, EMTEC, Sony, Tevion, Traxdata, PrimeDisc, Sentinel, TDK, Speers, Philips, Arita, SK, Nashua, Gut&Billig, Sky, Ultron, and Memorex are some of the brands that sold or are selling Ricoh media. A rather impressive list and you will notice the names of the prominent brands. In the case of Memorex, they stopped selling the higher quality media and went to the CMC manufactured discs. Those are the ones that are giving Memorex the bad rep.

As far as compatibility, most of the drives that play -R will play the +R unless it's some of the older equipment made prior to +R coming on the market. -R was the first format, but it was quickly followed by the +R. You'll even run across some players that will only play factory DVD ROMs. If you're worried about compatibility with your standalone player, and you can't find the compatibility info on the net, just buy a couple in the jewel packs. You can always use the few extras for data storage on the PC if you can't use them for videos on the entertainment center.
