@bbmayo - thanks!
@saugmon - I used DVDinfo to test my Sony 8x discs today - the results were better than Nero's results. I still had some PIE/PIF errors, but no CRC read errors. They work perfectly, so I guess I'm good to go. Which test is more important?
Rima.com just sent me a confirmation for my order of 100 TY02's. I'm hoping there as good or better than the Sony version of the TY02's.
Another note - I have burned over 300 Memorex 4x and 8x discs over the last year and a half. I had a lot of coasters, but I'm not sure if it was the media, DVDXcopy, or a combination of both. Once I tried the Sony's, I never looked back.

Hey robtwilk,I've burned a few hundred backups this year. Only 1 ligitamate burn error on a verbatim -4x digital movie quality disc this year-lucky I only bought a 5 pack. I had a few more coasters because of mobo trouble-black screen of death.Just took care of that this morning.
I look for quality mfg codes on my media. Memorex does use some pretty crappy media, and got a bad rep on them. Because of these many manufacturers for the same brand names, Taiyo yuden are highly recommended. I've burned a slew of maxell/sony 1x-8x/and verbatim +4x and +8x. All are performing just as well as the tygo1's I picked up last week. Maxell uses some very good manufacturers and no crappy ones, that's why I usually recommend them to newbs or members who want to find good quality-local media.I'm always checking out different media.

Quote: Yes, these are ty's. I got that exact same TG001133# on a staples sale in january.Just finished my 1st 50 pack spindle of them,no coasters and zero errors using dvdinfopro on several of them.I got 300 more to go,lol
Wow I got one of these from Rima for a sample. I burned it at 4x on a Lite-on 1633S BSOS f/w. This disc was a total coaster. Scans were awfull and outer edge was unreadable. I thought for sure it was a fake. I am very disapointed to say the least. Maybe Lite-on's don't like TY's. Seems strange since Lite-on lists them as one of their recommended medias.
Where I really screwed up is I went ahead and ordered 50 before getting the sample. I'll more than likely be sending these back. I ordered a 50 pk Verbatum DLP dvd+r injet hub printables made by MCC that I hope will be much better.

Hey mort, sounds like that litey don't like them.
I had the same trouble with verbatim -4x digital movie quality coded Mcc-01-rg20. 1 perfect coaster out of 2 discs. Lucky I only bought a 5 pack.I hope you didn't pay too much for that 50 pack.Usually $20 when they are on sale at staples.Send them my way buddy.
I don't even think you can even trust sony.I have gotten a hold of some sony dash format coded: sony04d1 that were made in taiwan and in AUSTRIA.
That's why I am going to try to stick with verbatim +8x full hub printables for my main backups and see how my tygo1's I just got work out.

Hey saugmon, no these were not that cheap. They were the only dvd+r TY's I could find that were inkjet hub printable. They cost me $41.02 US with shipping.
What burner do you use? How do you like the 8x Verbatum DLP hub printables? Thats what I ordered from meritline.

We use TY's from supermedia with perfect results..these say "TG001158". A few months ago we were having major recording problems. Of course, we blamed it on the media (Ridata, Prodisc). The problem was that blanks were not being recognized and the Plextor 708 couldn't determine what laser power to use. With NO other changes made, when this was replaced with a new Plextor 716, all problems went away. Oh yeah, we have always burned at 4X max. The 708 was around 1 year old and I presume it was simply worn out.

Hey mort,I think I mis-understood your last post. I was looking at those same ty + hub-printables.I believe it was on one of your posts a couple weeks ago when you were looking for FULL Hub printable + media.
I just ordered those +8x verbs hub printables at meritline last week and ups won't deliver till tuesday or wednesday.Just got my new mobo/80 wire ide's/ and an epson r-200 yesterday and My benq's + backups are booktyped to dvd rom,and I have yet to find a player/pc rom dvd drive/ or 5 or so ps2's to play them.I have access to 4 pcs-2 with benq 1620's and 2 with nec 1200a's. No trouble re-ripping those benq backups with anyone of them.
Those regular data life plus +8x are very nice in both my benq's-both 1620 with original firmware and my tv home burner.Just got a spindle of 100 of them 3 or 4 weeks ago from amazon.com and the 1st 40 or so had no issues.
Heck, even some cmag teons I picked up just to try out work decent, but I don't trust them.My good ole sony dvpns-325 can tell the difference when I slap in a teon, couple spots of pixellation at 4x.
I'm hoping those hub printables will work great. Later

It mostly comes down to what works for each person. Yes there are good and bad brands, and no one should buy cheap/crappy media. So many stories of one person's dream and another's worst nightmare.
I will continue to buy the Sony 8x and if the TY's I ordered from Rima.com are as good I will buy those also. I have one picky DVD player that I use it to test all my DVD's - if they work in my Sony DVP-CX850D (200 DVD jukebox) they will work in all of my players.
It's best to have many players available to test burned DVD's (I have seven). If I only tested them one of my Sony DVP-NS425's, almost all of them would play. But this is an incomplete picture, since it may or may not play on my Sony DVP-NS725, my Sony 200 Jukebox, or my Sony 400 Jukebox - which are more picky.

Saugmon,
I tried some of those BenQ dvd+r hub printables too. About half of them are not recognized by my pc dives or set-top player after being burned, the other half aren't too bad, only had one freeze once. Not very good percentages 50% coasters. I also tried some BeAll dvd+r hub printables. Much better printing surface than the BenQ's but more freezing during playback. These were all recognized after the burn.
I get my TY hub printables monday. Rima said I could try up to 5 of them and still return if necessary. Should get my Verbatum DLP's on thursday. I'll let ya know how these work with my setup.

I went looking for printables at my local staples and all they had were 20 packs of memorex for $25. NOT,i'll just wait for those verbs. I was curious about those ty + full hub printables.
I still haven't tried any benq or beall media.Between the regular +/-maxells/sony +1x-8x,those tygo1's/and those verb mcc-002/mcc-003: I haven't noticed any standalone issues. All of them perform great.
I was getting hammered with "no disc inserted" types of errors on my other 2 burners, when playing those backups on my bedroom apex player.Getting that extra benq last week took care of it. Now I don't have to worry about which burner or format I use to send to which family member. These + discs are booktyped for dvd-rom and haven't found any dvd drive that won't play my benq backups.

Yeah Thats why I only buy dvd+r media, I too booktype all my backups to dvd-rom. The only discs I have had any compatable issues with since were about half those BenQ's and like I said those wouldn't even play in either one of my dvdrw's so it was obviously a problem with the media.

I hear some good things about benq media from our members up north in canada, but like any brand of media-it don't always perform well in some burners.

I received the TY's I ordered from Rima today and although they are not HUB printable as advertised, The scans on these look a whole lot better than the scan on the sample disc Rima sent me. I think these will actually play and from the looks of the scans, play well. They are printable just not HUB printable.

there's a brand i used (here in UK) when i started out doing DVDs - Bulkpaq 8x Orange, they had media code TYG02; I used to have loads of these freeze on me way back..
Stupidly i didn't suspect them at the time as a) i had loads of tubs to use up and b) they had media code TYG02 which i foolishly thought made them good. Finally the penny dropped and i switched media a few times. Tried few other things as well like different PCs, replaced burner under warranty with the Sony in my sig below etc etc..Then came across afterdawn. These are fakes (some places have the nerve to push these as TY's) as i've read in numerous places...
Anyway i digress, i now only use Verbatim Datalifeplus (100s burnt and watched 100%); i have many 100s of potentially unwatchable films on those bulkpaq's that i probably won't watch for a v long time. ARGH..

Yeah, my first foray into the DVD burning world was with those lovely orange Bulkpaqs, as I thought they were quite cheap at only a quid a pop. I soon learned the error of my ways.
Mind you, the MID on the Bulkpaqs did fess them up as Princos, so I suppose the warning was there for me to see........... if I'd known what the heck a MID was back then.

I have used 25 of my 100 8x +R TY02's from Rima.com. The results have been outstanding. I still prefer the TY02's sold by Sony. Basically the same media, but the Sony has a nice finished surface that makes labeling slightly easier and doesn't show smudges or fingerprints.
If you buy the Sony's, make sure they are "made in Japan". I can't vouch for the "made in Tawain". They were on sale this week at CompUSA for $19.99 per 50pk ($20 off). I bought six packs and they are TY02's and work as well as the batch I bought a few months ago.

i totally agree w/ robtwilk, it was actually under his suggestion that i went to compusa and wiped out my local store for all their sony dvd+r's made in japan~ :)
on top of the 1,800 TY 4x dvd-r i ordered from supermediastore, i got another 500 8x Sony dvd+r from compusa~ thank you robtwilk by the way for letting me know about this deal. i have used about 30 out of my 1st 50 pack and would have to agree that the surface is easier to write on than my other TY media coded media, i am a sharpie guy myself, even though i have an Epson R320, i just don't have a scanner to copy and print on the dvds, i know there are many sites that have the pictures available for download, but the majority of my backups that i do are not "typical dvds" purchased from retail outlets, i buy a lot of foreign films that many sites do not have the cover pictures of. i have a few hundred of the TY silver printables that i have yet to use, i've only actually printed the covers to less than 70 dvds, my own personal preference, i like the shiny look over the look of the white printables.
i can see my post is going wayyy off topic now, but, just wanted to add my 2 cents worth on this Sony TY media...it's just as good and reliable as my Fuji TY's i got from Best Buy few weeks ago when they had their sale there. for those of you who agree with me in terms of the excellent quality of AUTHENTIC TY media, the Fuji and Sony (both Made In Japan) are equal to the quality of the "branded Taiyo Yudens" purchased online from supermediastore, rima, or meritline. the printables are naturally more expensive, but, for those of you who use them more frequently than i do...it seems like they are well worth the extra 20-25 cents each~ Same reliable TY quality, now printable~ hehe

@kivory666 - omg i thought i bought a lot of blanks. I (drops head and shuffles feet) buy usually 100 or 125 at a time, in like 4 or 5 tubs of discs. I'd buy more but i can't store too many tubs on my boat!, it's hard enough storing the burnt discs.. I found an advert from a reputable uk outlot called www.svp.co.uk - they do 100 TY printables for £60 plus postage, whoch is too steep for me, my Verb Datalifeplus are around £7 for 25tub.

@ creaky
yeah, my wife thinks im crazy, but, hey, im just kinda "excessive" to say the very least. the way i look at things, if it's on sale, buy whatever i can get my hands on for a good price. i know these Made In Japan TYs at retail outlets are harder and harder to find amongst the Made in Taiwans, so, i just search through all the stacks to find the Japan ones and put them into my shopping cart and push it down the aisle. haha.
even though i picked up another 500 at compusa, there were at least 3000 left of the made in taiwans, so, i had to sort things out slowly and painstakingly...they had 4 huge stacks of these things...i was diggin thru the back to find the "hidden gems."
well, im here in California where the media flows like water, i guess i do have an advantage living here in the U.S. for media, since you guys pay so much more over there in UK. happy burning to ya creaky, u should think about adding another section to ur boat to house all ur dvds~ :P maybe not possible, but, it seems like you are my counterpart on the other side of the globe.

kivory666 - Glad you landed some Sony "made in Japan" 50 pks. I bought all but one pack at my CompUSA last Sunday - there was some newbie there looking at media so I gave him the last pack of "made in Japan". They had a lot of "made in Taiwan" left on the shelves. I was taking their stacks apart, rebuilding stacks, making a mess - but hey it was worth it!!
Also, my local Fry's started carrying the Sony 8x +R 50 pks. They are all "made in Japan", but not on sale! There's a part of me that wants to buy all I can, but the other part says "media prices are going down, so don't buy too many at today's prices".
Hopefully we can all keep an eye out for these great deals and share the fortune!

don't fall into temptation my friend, i have taken this route many a times with nothing left in my pocket for lunch that same day~ :)
but, definitely, buy them on sale if you can, i'll keep you up to date as well if i find any more deals similar to this one, just my way of giving back to the community since you hooked me up with the sony deal. :)
happy hunting, im sitting on well over 3,000 discs now after this purchase added to my best buy fuji and online purchases within this last month~ but, you know me, will always pick up more if the price is right~ :)

creaky shuffles hit feet angrily here in rip-off britain where there is zero chance of going into a store chain and finding a/ disks of good enough quality and b/ discs that cost a reasonable price.
hip-hip hooray to ordering via the internet, guess i'd better order some more Verbs then!
edit- i forgot c/ even less chance of finding gems of any sort in a walk-in store.

good luck

naw, it's good that you can find good deals over there. I'm happy enough with the price of my Verbs, i've had enough years of being bled dry in this country for everything except fresh air!. And at least i can't be sent to the Tower of London for despising the taxman in this day and age lol :)
The real shame about blank dvd's is if these big stores sold them at a reasonable price they'd make a killing. Ah well, i suppose they do already from the ppl who pay their prices..
