i arrange my dvd collection by genre, i figure alphabetically would take too long and with new dvds i buy each and every week, it would be a mess to move stacks down a notch just to insert a few new "A" titles and such.

i have mine divided up on my rack based on comedy, horror, action, disney, chick flick, asian/martial arts and a dedicated angelina jolie section :)

in terms of my backups in the binders, it's all based on genre similar to how i categorized them above. :)

it works for me, but, might not be well suited for others, i have too many to put them alphabetically, i would need to hire a secretary for that feat~

good day to you.

I have no rhythm or reason to how I store mine. While I have 4 200+ DVD binders almost filled I always seem to know which one they are in. For some reason I remember that but not birthdays :).
I also have an excel spread sheet with them all on it.
Creaky - as for the dye running I have seen it happen (it didn't leak though) - cheap media of course. A friend of mine would only use the cheapest he could find until recently. Maybe I'll do a google and find a defitive answer about this vertical/hortizontal bit.

The reason they ask you to store them vertically is because they know people will eventually stacking them on top one another. And if the DVD has no support (for example, in a binder where it's lumpy because of empty slots, thicker around binder than edge), the DVDs will warp over time if left in that position. Sure, maybe not noticable to the naked eye, but when it's spinning at 10,000+RPM in your player and your player starts shaking, you'll know what I mean by warping. I keep most of my DVDs in slim cases (100 for $13). I throw out the cases of the DVDs I buy and put them in slim cases too (a real space-saver). Each slim case will even hold 2 DVDs, good for my Special Edition sets. My data DVDs will sit on the original spindle. It has a firm base so there is no warping. I keep my music CDs in binders, and they get stacked. Why? Human nature.

You say you throw out the original dvd cases? You wouldn't want to work something out w/ me and send them my way would you? P.M. me if you want or just post here first and we could p.m. later if needed.
Thanks!

with all of the scary ideas that storage is what creates data loss i buy the dvd cases from supermedia store at 200 for 30 us dollars, and inserts, but i also like them to look nice. i use a program that will print nice looking inserts that i got from best buy when i bought some memorex cases.i would never put my in those cd sleeves just casue they get scratched easier. i also bought five stroage racks from walmart that hold 125 dvd cases each, theyre black and identical and it looks pretty cool, even though 2 are empty, but not for long. well gotta get 2 work on fillin those other 2.

fishbulb,
I don't buy that many DVDs. I'm not a Blockbuster store. ;) But I must have throw out 100 or so over the past 2 years. You wouldn't believe the space that using slim cases saves over the DVD cases. I could save even more space with the basic nylon/paper CD covers but they look and feel too flimsy for me.
