lol, thanks !!. i have my moments (and a helping of copy/paste too). I recall commenting on +/- formats a while back and as i didn't know enough about it, i got myself in the midst of a slight flame war. So now i don't comment on formats, it can be a passionate subject!
It's tricky sometimes collating/posting as it's not too comfy sat down on the floor of the boat (and a little chilly this evening).
It's my own fault, i participate in far too many posts and they tend to flood my inbox lol, i'll be an afterdawn addict at this rate. It's just much more interesting participating than my dayjob (Unix - not the most rivetting subject, though there are good aspects - i like Veritas NetBackup so post a fair bit about that)

I think I'm gonna' buy a 5-pack of Fuji DVD+'s to see how those work. I've been watching the firmware updates for my burner, too. I have TSS HS-552U......which is fairly new. The reviews on it were good but they said the firmware was suspect and that Samsung is working on updating this. And here I thought it was gonna' be simple to burn DVD's.......

I'm gonna' buy a 5-pack of Fuji DVD+'s for the hell of it. May be that'll be the cure I'm looking for. I know the firmware on my TSS HS-552U is an issue, too. I've read some reviews on the burner and that was a low-spot. I guess Samsung is working on updating the firmware as we speak. Hopefully they'll release an update soon. And I thought burning DVD's was gonna' be easy.

Hi arniebear,
I think that with technology improvements and good media, faster burning speeds are not the problem they once were. My benq will burn most 4x media at 8x and most 8x media at 12x some at even 16x. Any way I've got some ritek [code ritek r03 (only paid .32 per disc)] to play with (all I use now are hub printables) and I've made some 12x burns on em and even though the PI,PIF errors are a little higher it did not affect affect playback in the least. Play perfect.
I will however continue burning my keepers at 4x or no more than 8x for insurance purposes. Noobs disregard this thread.
Creaky,
You're cool dude, no worries. You always provide excellent information. If you have good luck with dvd-r's carry on, everybodys setup is different and the info you provide is by no means misleading or incorrect. You should try a small package of dvd+r's and booktype them dvd-rom someday just for experience. I know I like to try alternatives. You're alright in my book ole buddy.
Man what is wrong with this server. I've tried to post this 4 times.

@ dapirate
if you do go for the fuji dvd+r media, try to find some that are made in japan...the ones i use quite frequently are MIJ fuji's 1x-8x dvd+r, those are genuine Taiyo Yudens which i highly recommend, check the MID code in my sig. :)
while your case does not seem like it's ONLY a media problem, sometimes people discover miracles with their burning once a GOOD media is used. just my 2 cents~ good luck
Recommended Media:
Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups
