Strickly dialup. ;-)
Sometimes I can't stand it.
Let me ask it this way: is DVDShrink the only option
to work on my Video_ts file directory?
Or if the main content is really close to the 4G limit,
then could less compression (defaultis 56%) be an
alternative?

I certainly don't know who those are.
But my current thinking is: old hardware runs old program
rather than the latest release of something.
Other workarounds might include making AVI files to view
on computer with Divx or something (?) I don't know
I'm just guessing. I'm hitting the wall with this
program on this job.
Might try another job just to see if that changes anything.
Also Linux is more stable or is supposed to be. I know about
kb3 audio ripper/burner but is there anything in the Linux
world to do these functions? Let me try something....
{time passes, lah dee dah lah dee dah]
Nope, the closest thing in the Linux world is a how-to at
Ubuntu Linux to get WINE going to use DVDD and DVDShrink.
WINE is a program that accesses a Windows partition... that
is another one of my projects. No cigar on that either. :-)

actually wondering if you want to try something and then post the results.
Lets see if you can convert the vobs into something else.
try the link below. It will take you to a site where you can download a tool that will convert the vob file into avi/mpeg etc
http://www.allformp3.com/dvd-copy-software/vob-to-avi.htm

fat32 wont handle your 4gig file you would need to encode it in chunks

Sure, the chunks are the VOB's or am I missing something?
Individual VOB files are less that 4G
I've successfully burned longer jobs than this using the
same 2 progs to decrypt and shrink.
Will come back in here tomorrow.

@lon - let's try something here - the directory that Decrypter has it's files in - is it (in total) less than say 4.3GB or so ?. If so, you don't need to run DVD Shrink on the directory as it will fit as is, onto a blank DVD
??

Hello andmerr,
Was the test thrown towards me? If yes great. I know am pc dumb & illiterate, but am a fast learner.
I tell you exactly what I did as follows. (But could not complete the assignment, as my pc was required for some imp. professional work.
1.Clicked on Xilisoft.
2.Than File > Add> found the location of VOB file.
3.Down in Profile selected mpeg-2.
4.Destination> Browse> Gave the path.
5.Clicked on Encode & it stared converting the VOB to windows media player compatible mpeg-2
I?ll do it again completely some other time & let you know the results.
By the way was I doing the right way? Converting VOB to mpeg-1, 2, AVI, WAV, 3GP, AVI, DivX , mp3 etc.?
Take care.

jane1 it wasnt a test for you , i want to know if lon's machine can handle the encode from VOB to AVI.I really doubt that it can after looking at his stats.
Jane1 your not fooling any one, you may pretend to be dumb but after looking at some of your questions and answers , i can see a person who is actually quite smart.

This is like Tribes. I don't know what time zone you're in
but I am back but briefly... it's the equivalent of getting
up in the middle of the night.:)
To review : I should try to cxonvert VOB files to
avi and see if the job will play on the computer if not
in a standard dvd player, right?
In between time, I want to try another job just to see what
happens.

The latest is I tried a different job on a commercial dvd.
I let it go on automatic for a while and took a nap.
I woke to find the Benq 1620 flashing it's green light
pretty fast.
DVDShrink had an error screen up that said (after a lot
of stats) --> Unrecoverable read error. The dvd was jammed
in the drive some way so I used the front pinhole but that
didn't do any good. I restarted to get access to Nero
which has a soft eject option. Nero couldn't load the
drive paramaters and the Benqwas still inactive.
I finally jiggled some plugs on the BenQ and the tray
opened. What a relief. I would hate to have the thing
serviced. They charger about $20 US to get dvd's out of
players around here.
So I haven't done the VOB to AVI test yet.
Will look at that now. Just remembered last night I looked
up the program to do VOB to AVI and IIRC it is a pay for
program. I'll look again and review the posts.

Here is what I found up higher.
Something wasn't coming together on this. I got the VOB list
in a window, but returning ot the main prgram, the files didn't
show up. So I never got to the encoding screen, wherever that is.
I did file -> open mpeg -> select VOB files Xilisoft file tree appears
and I don't know where to go. I did this once but apparently it was
was a lucky break. I have difficulty with software in general. It makes sense to everyone but me.
Ok I have the video_ts VOB files in the "Select mpeg files" window.
I click ok and nothing happens. I close that window and don't know where to go next. The main title screen is inactive.
At main screen, clicking on the little bitty VOB tab just takes
me back to the previous screen.
Now I am further along and I have Input Index and Audio plus a title 1 and title 2 with check boxes plus I selected output to AVI.
Output folder is DVDVolume from the other job.
I click the title that is 1 hr 15 minutes because it is shorter
than the other one.
Little red dot indicates 'encode' so I try that...
The program says I can only do five minutes so I am screwed.
Another big time sink.
The program is not fully operational.
No VOB fiole that I know of is 5 minutes long.
Lets try something else.
That's where I am.

Xilisoft Update:
The encoding process is going and I expect it to stop
around five minutes.
The weird part is I'm looking at the preview box and don't
recognize who is being interviewed or talking on camera.
Maybe it's the program developer explaining about the 5 minute
rule. (?)
Anyway the process isn't choking and shows about 2.8% completion
of the whole job.
More later. I suppose you all went to sleep by now.

@lon - i've pasted part of your very first post in this thread as i'm not convinced we're not going round in circles.
Quote: WTF is up with this program? I have been trying to get
this one job out forever now: 2-3 hour processes winding up in pure
wasted time.
- don't take this the wrong way but i fear this thread is going to go on and on in the same way for many more pages.
Quote: But my current thinking is: old hardware runs old program
rather than the latest release of something.
- what version of DVD Shrink are you using ?
Quote: @lon - let's try something here - the directory that Decrypter has it's files in - is it (in total) less than say 4.3GB or so ?. If so, you don't need to run DVD Shrink on the directory as it will fit as is, onto a blank DVD ??
- i asked this early on..
Quote: The latest is I tried a different job on a commercial dvd.
- right we might be winning. What was the name of the commercial movie ?
Quote: I woke to find the Benq 1620 flashing it's green light
pretty fast.
- sounds good to me
Quote: DVDShrink had an error screen up that said (after a lot
of stats) --> Unrecoverable read error.
- again, what was he name of the commercial movie ?, could be that it has newer protection that DVD Shrink can't handle and/or you're using an old version of DVD Shrink.
Quote: The dvd was jammed in the drive some way so I used the front pinhole but that didn't do any good. I restarted to get access to Nero which has a soft eject option. Nero couldn't load the
drive paramaters and the Benqwas still inactive.
- if you could try Nero we might have more luck by looking at the Nero log.
Quote: I finally jiggled some plugs on the BenQ and the tray
opened. What a relief. I would hate to have the thing
serviced. They charger about $20 US to get dvd's out of
players around here.
- hmmm.... maybe there's a jumper incorrectly set on the back of the drive or incorrect hard drive cable or something basic like that
let's try something as this thread is becoming surreal -
download Nero info-tool from here - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/neroinfo.html
Run it, note down the following, and paste here. Here's what mine shows -
click on the drive tab, note down the firmware version
click on configuration tab, note down whether ANY or ALL the DMA fields are on or off
it may be worth clicking on the aspi tab, and see if it says 'installed and working properly'
Please answer some of these questions and we 'might' get you sorted
