Just because a certain media says 4x/8x/or 16x doesn't mean everyone will get that speed out of them. It all comes down to firmware.Firmware is the programming that tells your burner what media it is allowed to burn and how fast to burn it.It's the burner manufacturers recommendation on what media is safe enough to use. They do many tests on different media.
I haven't run into any 4x media that lets me burn at 8x yet. All the 8x speed media will allow me 12x and 16x speeds. And just like yourself,I didn't pay attention to my max speed setting and those sony +1x-8x successfully burned at 16x with a great quality backup.
it's because Taiyo Yuden media is THAT good LOL~ :)
hahahaha..i can burn my TYG01s @ 8x too if i allow it/set at max speed w/ Nero, BUT, i burn all my 4x @ 4x and all my 8x dvd-r/dvd+r media @8x...that is just PERSONAL PREFERENCE, i am not recommending you burn 4x TY media @8x, i have done a few that way without problems, but the chance of errors is MUCH higher, even with high quality media~
i burn all my higher rated TYs @ 8x too, personal preference again because it works for ME...but, even i would suggest to anyone starting out to keep the burns @4x just to be safe~ :) good luck.
