- this isn't a Nero problem (i see an awful lot of logfiles!). Plus i have 1GB and i just happened to be watching my memory usage last night. Even with my antivurus software running i still had 600+MB free whenever i burn

I havent had a chance to get new media yet but as I said about the memory prior to Nero running I has 700+ free. So if it is not normal for the memory system cache to rise dramatically when Nero is performing the file cache process prior to butn then I have a problem but it isnt with other apps running any ideas?

Well I isolated the cause of the memory problem and solved it but that isnt the cause. The problem was related to the caching of 4 gigs of network files. When I first copied the files to the local drive and then attempted the burn the memory was fine as you will see in the attached log. The file caching process was also almost instant instead of taking several minutes. However about 8 minutes after the burn was started the illegal disk error once again showed. The burn process showed 1% the entire time and indicated it was writing the lead in. Also note I removed the read only dvd drive from the system to make sure it wasnt a conflict there.

I also wanted to let you know that WinDVDCreator is intalled on the system although i have never used it ( I think its for videos only) I saw from earlier posts that Roxio software can cause problems and didnt know if this software has issues.

Try updating your firmware it is two behind, it may be why your burner does not like your disks. Here is the Lite-on site for firmware

Here is yet another log ( i am collecting a lot of ruined disks, Ill have to think of an art project, lol) Anyway I wanted to simplify things a step further and disabled the built in and unused raid controller on the motherboard that was showing up in log as that psuedo device with dma off. Cant really think of anything else but the media but i didnt think media quality problems showed up with such regularity.

As stated you need a firmware update, the drive does not like your disks :)

well spotted arniebear, i could have sworn that KS04 was the latest (i'd obviously confused the 1693S with another drive, let's face it we see a lot of drives/threads each night!)

@MrMondo - if the firmware doesn't help you should consider better discs, see my sig for reliable/consistent/quality media, and maybe look thru the links in my sig for reasons why subpar/unheard of media is not money well spent..

Media is one of THE most important aspects in regards to burning..

The firmware update should help, but the disks are questionable a change still may be needed. The reults on GSC003 meida is mixed and off brands. Lite-ons like certain media, at least mine does, and will spit at bad. Burning as you suggested at lower speed might improve things.

Thanks SO MUCH!!! Ive got 50 Verbatim on the way but I guess for less than critical applications I will be able to use the Legacy disks I got with my purchase of the drive. In other words the firmware update did the trick!!! The Verbatims were quite the deal too in case ur interested at newegg they cost me 18.99 for 25 and if you buy 2 @ 18.99 there is a 12.00 mail in rebate from Verbatim.
VERBATIM 4.7GB 16X DVD+R 25 Pack Cake Box Disc - Retail
Model #: 95033

Anyway Thanks for all your help guys much appreciated

You are welcome, glad it worked out for you. Your firmware should be good for awhile but check every now and then to be sure, happy burning :)

So I have been having the EXACT same problem. Is media really the issue? I burned 10 maxwell dvds and 10 memorex dvds with no problem at all and now, suddenly, my new package of Maxwell dvds won't burn? Why would the burner not like them now? Or could it just be the batch? I'm going to head out tonight and buy some better DVDs.

Also, when the burning fails does that ruin the dvd? I thought something I read in this massive posting implied that (obviously, they are not very good anyway!).

Thanks!!
