I went on the Memorex web site to the contact page and explained my situation over the weekend. They replied today with a written email. They asked for a second chance ... well you read...
"I have purchased 8x-r and never had a problem. Now I bought
16x-r and the burners only burn at 4x. I am disappointed! I have 2 LG burner: gsa-4161b and gsa-4163b. The 4163 has the latest firmware for 16x. The 4161 should burn at 8x. I have 50 of these darn disks! What should I do? Your disks are rated at 16x and my burners have burned at 8x in the past. I feel that they should at the very minimum burn at 8x.
I feel gipped! Therefore I cannot buy Memorex 16x dvd anymore (and soon they will not have 8x in the store anymore so I will not be able to buy Memorex dvd's at all).
Oh ya...the customer usually gets screwed cause the media manufacturer will blame the hardware manufacturer and vice versa.
2 friends also bought these dvd's. One has the same problem. Awaiting results from the other.
Now that the box is open, and I have used several of these (had to test a couple!), I probably cannot return them to the store.
Sincerely, "
And here is their reply...
"We are sorry for the inconvenience you have experienced with our
products, and we hope that you will give us a second chance! We strive to produce a high quality product, and to ensure this quality; we do extensive research at our manufacturing facility. We also conduct various quality control tests. We will replace disc if you go to the website below and fill out
the form.
Memorex Warranty Replacement Procedure

So I went to page and filled out the info...

Guess what MID code will probably come back on those replacement memorex they send you?? CMC MAG or some other equal crap.
The doc says it best and has probably said it until he is black and blue in the fingernails from typing it so much: kivory666 Quote: memorex cmc mags SUCK~ regardless of speed rating, whether it's 4x,8x, or even these high speed 16x.
No offence but i don't know what kind of test you ran on these that makes you think CMC Mag is good stuff. Every CMC mag i test comes up as the worst of the lot of any media type i have. A simple coaster check in my house came up with 100% CMC Mag. You are not going to convince us that memorex/CMC mag is a good combination. Too many of us have been burned by CMC mag disks. hey that is one way CMC mags burn everytime, the user gets burnt in the wallet.Ha ha.. Even if you have one playing now, it may not play next week or the next time you put it in a player. If cost is your main concern Quote: bestbuy $13 for 50....what a deal!
just stop and think about how much you saved when your favorite movie now becomes your favorite cold beverage holder. I am repeating myself because you seem to want to listen, but don't like what you are hearing here. I think it sucks too that a company who advertizes "is it live, or is it memorex" winds up using the cheapest stuff just to make huge profits. They could still make a decent profit if they tried to produce quality stuff like verbatim and Taio Yuden. I guess there will always be plenty of people out there ready to snatch up the latest heaping, stinking, smelly, pile of crap that CMC mag and other cheapos produce.
You say now you are having errors.. but before it was working fine.. hhmmmmmmmmm..That is the way crap media works. You may even get a 50 spindle to burn flawlessly and even playback right after making it. Slowly or very quickly the dyes break down in this junk and your media becomes un-readable. It's not your fault, you did everything correctly, except the choice in media. Sorry tls1 i am just trying to convert you to the good media side. I see a glimer of hope in you. I/we here at AD have nothing to gain by pushing the good media other than to help you become a super burner with no problems burning. All too often it simply comes down to the media. Let me see if i can google Occam's Razor : Quote: Given two equally predictive theories, choose the simplest.
For example, a charred tree could be caused by a lightning strike or by someone who used a machine to burn the upper branches of a tree and then replanted the grass leading up to the tree to hide the machine's tracks. According to Occam's Razor, the lightning strike is the preferred explanation as it requires the fewest assumptions
Your media is the lightning strike. We know this, we don't have to guess, that CMC Mag stuff is genuine 100% crap. It can be scientifically reproduced at home by anyone using simple free programs, and unfortunate enough to have some CMC Mags. You just don't seem to want to belive it. Maybe i am trying too hard, or being too harsh with you on this. Crappy media drives me crazy.. I am foaming at the mouth as i type this.. :)

wow maxburn......... i am touched. that statement should be made a sticky ! (not like there aint none anyway already), but that was good.
if i were still a newbie to burning, and was aking what to buy, and having read your post, i'd be converted instantly. where were you when i first made my crappy choice to buy that dreaded media... hec, where was ad when i bought it. well, soon after i bought my media and had my first problems, i did a google on media choices, and lo and behold, after dawn was at the top of the list. thats how i found out about this place, and have been a member ever since. people like creaky, doc ty (aka kivory), arnie bear, mort, saugmon, catfreak, alkohol, ...(the list goes on, and sorry for leaving out others) have taught the way, and now i am here too helping out the noobs !! giving advice, reading at all hours of the night.
just plain and simple, don't buy crappy media............... PERIOD
thank you and drive thru please !

Hi there buddy. I think we new guys here need to take the pressure off all the great ones you mentioned whenever we can. They have carried on this battle long before us. It is almost like a religion. If we can convert one to the good side, he/she may then convice their friends and soon the world will burn in harmony with CMC mag becoming only fuel for creakys wood burner.. lol
I found this place when I had a problem trying to make a copy of my house of flying daggers movie. This site has given me a college equilivent education on the problems of trying to become a burn master.. :)
Hey, the bad media lovers don't know any better, and neither did we until we found our beloved AD. :) I just know sooner or later i am going to p*ss someone off by trying to get them to entertain the idea that, just mabye, mabye.. their media may be the cause of their problem. The ppl over at cdfreaks seem to love CMC mag, but i am not convinced.
May the force be with my fellow good media fans. I have a yern to burn..

Hey maxburn, don't sh!t on me!!! I did not come here to be bashed by you or anyone else for that matter. I did not come here to bash anyone either. I didn't come here to bash or praise any manufacturer either!
I came here looking for answers. That's what this site is supposed to be about. But you leave a bad taste in my mouth.
I simple presented the information in the best way I knew how. That's all! I don't know about you, but when I purchase something and it turns out to be piece of crap, I try and do something about it (like calling the manufacturer and complaining) instead of sitting around on your high horse and bitching about how you've been burned.
Maybe the mods can knock some sense into you...

thats not called for........ you fail to realize, there have been hundreds and hundreds of posts like your, and all of the higher up members in here are getting tired of 'these' particular threads. no offense on your part, but do a simple search, even in member's sigs, you will see their links. its just to steer you in the right direction, nothing more, nothing less.
watch your tone too, others will instantly not like you. possibly even report you too. ad is a nice place, and no one here is to bash you, but inform you and guide you in the right direction to make wise choices.

Really i am not trying to bash you. I honestly do not want to offend you, or anyone else here.
Quote: I came here looking for answers
I am trying to answer you the only way i know. Now you are mad at me. You did the right thing by complaining to the manufacturer. I thought i might be coming across to hard and really, it is not directed at you, it is the media i dislike. The mods can go ahead and bash some sense in to me, maybe they can figure out a way i could have phrased that without you feeling like i bashed you, but I stand by what i said on memorex and cmc mag. You can hate me, that is your right. I don't hate you. I want to help you. This thread will not turn in to a slam contest on my part. You go ahead and say what you like about me. Again I am sorry if you took offense, that was not my intent. I could have offended you a lot easier and a lot more directly if that was my intention (and with less typing and research on my part). I was just trying to help you. I was in the same boat, having the same problems as you, and it turned out to be the media only, causing my problems. Not my computer, not my programs, not my lack of intelligence,, media, bad media. I will shut up now. oh, and my horse isn't high, i just checked.

@tls1 - i have yet to read this whole 2nd page properly but let me add that in my time here at afterdawn i have helped out on literally 1000s of logfile posts (groan!), and by far the most common culprit was, and still is.... bad media (and by far the most troublesome offender is always CMC).
Believe me, i (and others) tweak people's logfiles 'til there's nothing left to tweak and guess what the common culprit always is left there looking guilty and shamed up - CMC again...
There are quite a few of us who do this incessantly and it winds us up like you wouldn't believe, purely from frustration (with bad media), hence why we respond the way we do, it's most certainly not aimed at you...

I did not intend to give maxburn or anyone a hard time. I am sorry if I offended anyone. I am simply slightly frustrated and that I am not questioning anyone's knowledge or experience about this brand of disk. I will not buy this brand anymore anyways. I'll use up my media and that's it. Should they send me some more, I'll use it too....nuff said....
But now back to the burner... The real issue here is the burner (I think). I called LG today to ask about being able to burn 16x disks as advertised on the box the burner came in. They said that the burner CANNOT burn any 16x disks at the moment until a new firmware is produced. They said they are waiting for the codes. My friends with Sony and HP burners can burn these disks at 8x and even 16x (Please don't remind me about burning at high speeds is bad and that Memorex are bad disks). So basically what is happening with LG burners is that when they cannot figure out what the disks is (because the firmware doesn't know) it drops to 4x (or lower?) and forces you to burn at 4x. I think that the burners should be more open and let me burn at whatever speed I choose. I'm willing to take the risk.
What will happen when all these disks (4x, 8x, 16x) are not available anymore and they're upto 24x? What if LG stops producing firmwares for my burner? Even though the burner will be rated for a top speed, you will not be allowed to acheive it simply because they cannot recognise the code....
And when I pressed them for a firmware date they could not/would not give one...
oh well....hopefully dvd burners will be passe by then...

I just purchased a 5 pack of +R Memorex 16x in jewel cases for $1 at a yard sale (basically for the cases) and they coded out as RICOHJPN R03 .. What a surprise! I guess sometimes you get lucky. I almost threw the discs out, but decided to ID them just for grins ...

Ahhhhhhhh, ya got me there .. Actually the reason that I bought 'em is because in all honesty, I've had fewer Memorex coasters than I've had Taiyo Yuden coasters ... Puff on that for awhile

What do I do?? I go home with 200 DVD-r's for 70 bux.
I get home to burn one off.
What does it say? 4x only.
I google search: memorex 16x only burns at 4x
I came here. heh. OK, YOU WERE ALL RIGHT!
Memorex is garbage.
What do I do? Bring em back and get Verbatim 50 pack and 40 bux change.
Moral of the story? When a deal seems too good to be true, It usually is.

The LG GSA-4163B drive does not include the CMC MAG 16X MID code in its firmware. LG is aware of the problem and will issue a firmware update in about a month to allow the discs to record at 16X.
