It just simply doesn't install. There's no other program I could use that will install this file? Maybe the .bin file itself is damaged? Anything? I have a feeling Sony's tech support isn't going to be much help and I don't look forward to the waiting game that I'm sure I won't be able to get around.
Also, what other DVD+R brands are equal to Sony? If this doesn't work out I'm just going to go out and get something else.
EDIT: I've done a little googling of the particular .bin file and it turns out there's a lot of people in my situation. From what I've read, the drive that comes with this computer isn't actually Sony and that tech support wouldn't be able to help anyway. The readme that came with the file says this:
Original RPC-2 Firmware version BYS3 for the SONY DVD RW DW-D22A
Flash in Windows using "LtnFW"
If the drive is not detected after a misflash, then flash in DOS with mtkflash (1.69 or higher)
Use this command: "mtkflash # w /b BYS3.bin"
Where # is replaced by one of the following numbers:
1 - Primary Master
2 - Primary Slave
3 - Secondary Master
4 - Secondary Slave
If using mtkflash 1.80.1, then do not include the "/b" flag. Use this command: "mtkflash # w BYS3.bin"
I'm really not that tech-savvy and haven't ever had to venture into DOS mode for anything. Would this task be easy enough to accomplish? It's evident that I really have to get this problem taken care of some how some way. Looking for a random brand that works with what I already have really isn't the best solution.

from here - http://codeguys.rpc1.org/dvdrw_overview.html
there's quite a few drives being rebadged Lite-On 1633S (yours being one of them), however that screenshot you posted showed your drive to be a SONY DVD RW DW-D22A with BFS1 firmware..
The SOHW-1633S (16x+R, 4x+RW, 2.4x+R9, 8x-R, 4x-RW) can be rebadged as any of the following -
LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1633S
DVDRW DRW-3S163
SONY DVD RW DRU-710A
SONY DVD RW DW-D22A
GIGABYTE GO-W1608A
HIVISION DRW3S163
HP DVD Writer 630r
Imation IMWDVRW16E
Imation IMWDVRW16LI
Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16
PHILIPS ED16DVDR
TEAC DV-W516G
WAITEC ACTION16/1
ps - this is for the other guys to look over, though i'm pretty sure the link i provided before was fine as your drives shows up as the Sony DW22A

update - i just did another search, this time for 'Sony VGC-RB30'. Now i've found a link to BFS2 firmware for the drive which must be the correct one - http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-list.pl?template=EN&mdl=VGCRB30
However that explains the confusion. The firmware still identifies the drive as a Sony DW22A. Will have to be very careful recommending firmware in future; i dislike the extent to which rebadging goes to, it causes too much confusion

Creaky: Thanks so much for putting a little time and effort into figuring this one out, much appreciated. That said, I can't can't find anywhere in that last link that mentions a bfs2 file, can you show me where exactly?

The file off the Sony.com installed in about a half a minute, restarted, gave it another whirl in Nero and
SUCCESS.
Not only are my DVD+R's now working but I'm able to burn at 4x, where as before I updated my firmware, it was only letting me burn at 1x.
I really really appreciate the help guys, creaky in particular. I wouldn't have been able to figure it out on my own. Everybody keep up the good work.
Thanks again.

great jerkstore now that will be 60 bucks for tech. support lol just kidding.
and other good media to use is Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim and you can booktype your DVD+R media to DVD-ROM which will make the media the MOST compatable with all standalone players. and keeping it at 4X burn speed is the smart thing to do

I have a question? I read here often where it is suggested that we 4x max. In my Nero RECODE2 drop down for burn speeds list only 2.4x as the highest speed below maximum? What is maximum 16x? How do I change my setting to include 4x I'm currently using 8x DVD-R media. What book type we using DVD-R? THANX! I also have a SONY RA820G with the same SONY optical drive mentioned here.

@jerkstore - you're welcome, nice one, happy burning.
@paradyme - i don't use Recode, but that does sound like a firmware thing. Fimrware drives me up the wall. I just got rid of my trusty Sony DRU-700A as it finally gave up the ghost, and it had a nice range of burn speeds for the media i use (MCC, TY, Ritek G05). i forget which Lite-on drive that Sony is 'underneath', however i now have a new Lite-on 1693S (same as the Sony DRU-800A) and it's only got some of the burn speeds i need. For instance on one disc type (sorry can't remember which one) i can only pick 6x or 8x on the 8x discs. now what on earth are these people on when they write firmware, why can't they just take firmware from a previous drive and enhance it. anyway that's what i think. Your username sounds familiar, this we probably did look at your firmware so it's probably up to date, just not yet catering for your media as well as it might ?

@creaky
You are correct when it comes to Recode2. It shows the speeds that your DVD burner shows as available per type of media, so it is a "Firmware thing only."
@paradyme
While in the window that allows you to set burn speeds, open your drive and change the media to another brand or type. Give it a few seconds and you will see the burn speed options change as well. Try updating your firmware, if there is one newer then the one you have, and see if that helps.

Thanx....Uuuhm the only place I've found in Nero where you can change burn speeds is in the Nero Toolkit under Nero drive speed, where it list read only speed not write speeds, There it list my read spead 40x? which it seems to allow me to add 4x but it still does not update the drop down in RECODE2? The SONY website under my computers model name does not list at firm ware update for my optical drive which for this PC the SONY DVD RW DW-D22A?
