Tell me exactly what to do because I tried it and it didnt work. Also Nero customer service finally e-mailed me and said I can send them a blank cd-rom and they will burn me a copy of Nero 7. Isn't that gracious of them. I guess their business is so bad they can't afford to buy cd-roms anymore. Also I tried to download the newest update dated 2-22-06 and it does the same thing. These guys are killing me. If I wasn't so pi$$ed off about I would probably be laughing right now. Anyway, when I tried to download the .cab file I didn't get an option of where I wanted to save it too and it was already unzipped. Just remember before you laugh, I'm still new at most of this stuff.
kyblues - did you change the file attribute of the CAB file to "read only"? You can do that by right-clicking the file in Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer), left-clicking Properties, and in the next window, by checking the Read Only checkbox.
Then, copy the read-only CAB file to where the original Nero install extracted the install files - that would be under
C:\Documents and Settings\"whatever your username is in Windows"\Local Settings\Temp\Nero7.tmp\Cab (Windows Explorer should ask you if you want to replace the existing file - this is a good way to tell if you are putting the "fixed" CAB file in the right place.)
Then go to the Nero.tmp folder, and double-left-click the setupX.exe file.
This is what I did instead of re-extracting the install files (the re-extract is really the reason for setting the fixed CAB to "Read Only" so the re-extract wouldn't over-write the fixed CAB file with the bad version).
Good Luck!
PS - I did get the automated response from Nero customer service, but nothing else! Bad, bad, bad.
As many installers have experienced while installing Nero 7.0.5.4 Demo version some experience that just in the middele of installation you get an error message that the MFC7149090881.dll file is missing from the 1A8309D6.cab file and the installation ends. I have tried every kind of advice given at Nero homepage and even I have written an email explaining the situation. No way.
The solution is a little trick. Do the belowmentioned and then you will have a functioning demo of Nero 7:
1. Begin with installation program and pay attention where the temporary files will be extracted. They are mostly extracted to the
c:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\LocalSettings\Temp\Nero7.tmp
Under this directory you will find another directory named Cab. Under the Cab directory you will find the archive file named 1A8309D8.cab
2. As it is a bit tricky with cab files I will recommend to download the free archiver program alphazip which is a shareware program and will solve our problems. It can be found at http://www.alphazip.com/cab-files.htm. Download the file and install it.
3. Extract the files with in the 1A8309D8.cab to somewhere safe and for any safety reasons rename the original cab file to anything so that in case if anything goes wrong you have the original at hand.
4. Open the notepad and without typing anything save the file as MFC7149090881.dll.
5. With alphazip create a new 1A8309D8.cab file which must include the original two files and our new MFC7149090881.dll.
6. Copy the new MFC7149090881.dll to the same directory at c:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\LocalSettings\Temp\Nero7.tmp\Cab\
7. At c:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\LocalSettings\Temp\Nero7.tmp double click the setup file, sit back and wait until the installation finishes seamlessly.
8. Enjoy your new fully functioning Nero 7 Demo and if you like it don't forget to register.
I should have posted this earlier.... Got two emails from Nero!!!
1. The dll problem is solved by deleteing all files in the nero7.tmp directory. rmdir /s nero7.tmp from your "local settings\temp" there is no need to put in a dummy cab with that missing file. Seems their uninstaller enumerates all cabs in that directory includeing some left over from a previous install that are not in the 7.1.5.4 release.
2. They emailed me a copy of mp3pro after I complained that my over version 6 did not work anymore. Unfortunatly, after waiting for a week I went and bought a copy of that mp3pro and had just downloaded it that day when they emailed me my "free" copy.
It would still seem to me that Nero could post this "clean out the Nero.tmp folder" fix on their site (even though clearing the Temp folder something we should all be doing anyway on a periodic basis), not to mention fixing the installer.
I finally did get a response to my second email to tech support, with an apology for its lateness, but the instructions bordered on "not understandable". No response yet from customer service.
