@slosten

i PERSONALLY only use Mushkin Enhanced (the XP-xtreme performance black series) for MY computer, i have used Mushkin memory for over 7 years now without a SINGLE problem...yes, the high-end come at a premium, but, from PERSONAL experience i have never used anything BETTER than Mushkin~ :)

i have tried Corsair, OCZ, Kingston, Crucial, PNY technologies, and many of the no-name generic brands when i first started out, but, it really depends on YOUR needs in YOUR setup. i won't ever use the "value select" ram anymore only because for MY cpu intensive tasks, it just doesn't "cut it". :)

the Corsair XMS series is very good as well as the OCZ Platinum series...yes, both of these are more expensive than "usual", but will do the job w/ their low latencies and overclocking capabilities :) it ALL depends on what you NEED your memory to do~

good luck with your choice, you asked for an opinion, i gave you mine...Mushkin for me EVERYDAY~!

docTY~

Alright well I unexpectedly made $168 last night so I am going to head to Peoria and do some shopping tomorrow.

I am looking at picking up either a 1GB or 512MB memory card and some DVD+R's.

I am going to shoot for verbatim DLP's.

The more the better, so I recommend at least 1GB.

Well I had purchased $240 worth of liquor for a party we were throwing and didn't expect to make a dime. Then someone jokingly said sell shots for $2 and people started paying it so I started taking in cash. I never charged a decent-hot girl nor any of my good friends and still almost made my cash back. Since I wasn't expecting any back it is pretty much profit.

I have two slots for RAM. Will I affect anything if I take out the one I already have to replace it with a larger one?

nope, as long as you buy COMPATIBLE RAM for your particular motherboard, you can easily interchange/swap any stick module size for the one you have right now, the IMPORTANT thing is that you purchase the CORRECT RAM for your particular motherboard configuration~ :)

good luck~

docTY`

also, forgot to add, if you want to keep the RAM you have now and just add another stick to your 2nd slot, i would suggest you put the LARGER of the 2 (meaning RAM size ie. 256mb/512mb) into the first slot and then the smaller one into the 2nd~ :) let your motherboard utilize the larger of the 2 sticks FIRST when it's accessing the memory for your computer...so, put the larger one FIRST.... :)

also on memory, it depends on the system, but sometimes it is best to match the size in the channels. By this i mean if you have 4 slots, and you are only using 1, and it is 256mb, when only going up to 512mb, get another 256mb stick and place it in the slot right next to the existing memory stick. I say this because DDR memory sometimes has to have an exact MB match in both/all slots, or it reverts to Single channel memory. If you intend to totally populate your memory slots, and can make 168 bucks magically appear like that, I would go for the max 1 or 2 Gig sticks, but this can get very expensive. I noticed a speed increase in many tasks when i switched from 700 something MB to a straight 1 gig, then to 2gb. Some of it was due to the memory size upgrade, and some of it was from going back to DDR memory useage. Sorry, my brain is going. Gotta get some sleep.

I checked out Compaq's site. Here is what it said about my memory:

Standard Configurable Types

266 MHz PC2100 DDR

Configurable Memory Modules

128, 256, 512 (2x256), 1.0 (2x512) GB

Max Capability:

1 GB

Total DIMMs

Two

Total DIMMs Open

One if 128, 256, or 512 used

Incompatibilities Known

None

So basically I can't go any higher than 1GB and if I go for that I have to go with two 512 sticks?

no reason to make a new thread....I am now looking at getting some cases and labels for my DVD backups. What programs will I need to do this and what brands have people had success with?
