Hi have downloaded the codec and can now get it to open in VirtualDub, but TMPGEnc still doesnt like it. After decompressing the audio, I go into TMPGEnc but when I go to source the range, it usually either wont show the picture or wont show the audio. Then, in the middle of encoding the programme crashes. Any other suggestions?

Go to TMPGEnc and click options - environmental settings. click the vfapi plug-in tab. look for the directshow file reader in the list and right click it. give it higher priority until it reaches the top of the list and try again!

Well if you can get CCE SP (CinemaCraft Encoder) 2.50 and DVD2SVCD - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd2svcd.cfm

then you could create vbr SVCD (4 pass encoding) very quickly and have an hour on each disk with much higher quality than TMPGEnc could offer!

Im afraid im still having problems with this file :-( I have given up trying to cut edit the file and am just trying to encode it straight, but it freezes after it starts encoding. Could there be something wrong with the file?

Yes it plays fine on Ultra Player, which is what I always use to play files. I may try downloading it again

Takemyars... i've been having problems as well with TMPGenc, A lot of it has to do with the actual download.... but have a look at the new URL that dela posted. DVD2SVCD and CCE are the way to go. It's not that TMPGenc is bad but i am finding that running the three programs eventually i get a good BACKUP of MY Files. The only downside is that a lot of hours are wasted.

My question is what is the real difference of using tmpgeng or cce sp to create (s)vcd? Doesn't it really depend on the quality of your avi file or am i missing something?. Whats your opinion DELA? TMPGeng or CCE to create my vcd and svcd? cheers as always

For VCD use TMPGEnc

For SVCD use CCE SP
or you can also use ProCoder!

Here's an idea of a nice quality SVCD encoding

Using DVD2SVCD with the folowing settings will give you very high quality.

Video: 4 pass VBR SVCD min:300 average:1600 max:2450. That would give you a great quality encoding and would allow 60 minutes on an 80min disk!

The quality of your AVI is a very important issue because you are not going to get quality higher than the input quality! So if you have good divx or xvid avi's then SVCD is best but if you have low quality copys then just use TMPGEnc to make VCD!

coming from a different angle this time..... just passed an avi file through virtual dub and the program came up with this message "virtual dub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source avi file and will rewrite the audio header with standard CBR values during processing for better compatability. This may introduce up to 59633ms of skew from the audio stream. If this is unacceptable, decompress the file into WAV and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder". So i let the program do it and ended up with the new avi file over double the size. How? Why? What happened? Any tips? (just to let u know, i played the file after and the quality was a hell of a lot better)

It must have uncompressed something. Make sure that video and audio are set to direct stream copy!!

REf:
virtual dub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source avi file and will rewrite the audio header with standard CBR values ....
I ALWAYS resave these avi's with direct stream video and uncompressed audio, and yes, the file length increases because the audio is uncompressed, but if the AVI is error-free, then it is always in sync and u can do what u like with it....it only takes a couple of minutes to save....

vixnfox, i do that sometimes aswell but VirtualDUB likes to fuck up with VBR audio so I use VirtualDUBMOD (little better than VirtualDUB) or NANDUB instead!
