As to your original question, DVD life is stated by some sites as lasting 100 years or more. Since DVDs have not been around for that long, they are guessing, or estimating the life of a DVD. How the DVD is used, and stored, affects the life much more than anything else, other than the manufacturer of disc. Now if you really wanted to keep your data for a long time, a hard-drive can be fairly reliable, but movies are large data hogs, and can eat up the space on a 200GB HD in no time. If you make a master copy of your movie/data, and only use it for making copies from, the master should keep for your life time, if you take the proper precautions already mentioned by other posters. Use a disc in a portable DVD player, or give one to some kids, see if you get 100 years of trouble free playback..:)

@MaxBurn and Gear
Kudos Max. Thanks for your advice. As far as the "what happened people, why no response" is concerned, I seriously din't meant anything offensive.
Anyways, thats the media I'm using GEAR. I would appreciate it if you can get me any additional info. about the media code.
And, yes, the SONY DVD+R hat's available here is Indian made and not Taiwan or Japan.
Would you suggest me to go for ANY DVD media which is made in Taiwan or Japan?

Oh, sorry GEAR, I just over-read them. Yeah, I visited the links and found them helpful.
I can now kinda guess what tobuy and what not too.
Thanks for all the efforts that you guys have put in here to help me out and give me a clear picture of the best available brands in RecordableMedia available everywhere but not in India[\bold].
Can I bother you one last time? I've certain questions related to my PC(OS, Hardware, etc.,.). Where can I get help from? I mean any other websites, which have active forums and great people like you who respond immediately.
I would appreciate it, my friend.

No problems rushab143. I can understand you wanting to get a fast answer. Don't want to sound like im biting your head off. Some of us are like grumpy old bears being poked with a sharp stick when someone says hurry up. :)
Hi there Gear79, life / girlfriend started taking up more of my spare time. Good to see you too!
As far as the storing DVDs, DVD cases seem to offer more protection than a jewel case, but they take up more space also. I like the jewel cases stored in a drawer method, but have mine stacked on a desk right now, as i don't have a spare drawer (or more) to put all my movies in. And i keep getting more movies. Im going to have to come up with a good system for storing DVDs also.

dang gear, i was HOPING that i would see a PM in my box, guess there is someone MORE knowledgeable than me in your eyes regarding media ID codes :(
LOL...anyways, just messing around, but, yeah...those HP dvds, naturally, since they are MADE IN INDIA, the manufacturer there is gonna be Moser Baer India...hence that media id code above~ :) MBIPG101R03 just signifies "MBI" being Moser Baer India, the following letters and numbers just differentiates the rated speed of the media and the format, whether it be DVD-R or DVD+R :)
i feel rushab143 you are going to be fairly limited to WHAT kind of media you can purchase over there in India...regardless of brand name, Moser Baer India is probably THE largest media manufacturer in India, so, no matter which "brand" buys from them and repackages it to be sold retail, the manufacturer remains the same for the most part, IF it is made in India...sorry to be the bearer of bad news..but, MBI media is not very good...if at all possible, DO try to look for Verbatims that are MADE IN TAIWAN, those will be your best bet IF you can NOT find any that are MADE IN JAPAN~ :)

Recommended Media:
Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups
