@ kivory666, just a quick question for you as doc ty, do you know through your Ty rep why we are not able to buy them at regular retail outlets. I mean everyone is advised to use them, but at retail outlets they are disguised under other brand names, or you have to buy online poorly marked packageing no coloured label etc just a cakebox. Why don't they sell them themselves directly on the open market like all the other makers. With such a great product they should sell like hotcakes.
actually, i answered this question a LONG time ago by another fellow interested Taiyo Yuden member, however, you will not likely be able to find it using "search" through the threads :)

but, to the point, Taiyo Yuden is a dvd media MANUFACTURER, they do not actively market or sell in retail stores...the reason you can find unbranded TYs online is that those online retailers are distributors of Taiyo Yuden OR they are distributors (that do the "marketing" for them) for authorized distributors that "they" (the online retailers) buy from....

ok, that might be confusing...hmm...it's like a big chain/ladder...at the top, Taiyo Yuden manufacturers the dvd media, so now it is "available" for sale...various media "brands" ie. Fuji/Sony/etc. purchase the "raw" dvd media in bulk FROM Taiyo Yuden directly and then slap their "brand" on them, to sell in retail stores...naturally, all these companies that buy DIRECTLY from Taiyo Yuden get it VERY INEXPENSIVELY (buying millions of pieces) in bulk/quantity discount~ :) then they turn around and "label" or "brand" them with their company logo and sell to us (the general market) with a HEAVY markup (so the companies turn a profit, they wouldn't be making ANY money if they didn't jack up the price) hehe

the online retailers often times/always buy from authorized Taiyo Yuden DISTRIBUTORS, and then sell to the public via internet...mind you, the common ones here in the U.S.(supermediastore.com, rima.com, newegg.com, meritline.com, shop4tech.com, etc..etc..) do not have the "buying power" to purchase DIRECTLY from Taiyo Yuden, they ALL must go through an authorized Taiyo Yuden distributor in the U.S.~

there will almost ALWAYS be a "middleman" between Taiyo Yuden and the online e-tailers as well as possible "2nd middlemen" between distributors and online stores that carry a variety of media (ie. not ONLY Taiyo Yuden, but Ritek, Prodisc, Optodisc, their own store brand..etc..etc...u get the point) :)

so, to be a "big boy" in the media market, you have to have the buying power of such billion dollar companies such as Fuji, Sony to buy from Taiyo Yuden directly, 99% of the time an online company WILL have to go through a distributor to obtain Taiyo Yuden media to then RESELL to the public (the prices you see are approx. DOUBLE what THEY-the online stores- purchase it for from the distributors) that's how everyone down the chain makes $$$

there ya go, business made simple 101~ actually, i know a lot more in depth because i MYSELF own a company in the "media" industry, i "tried" to get a "deal" w/ Taiyo Yuden but failed MISERABLY as i too do NOT have the "buying power" necessary to start a distributor's account with them...it's VERY expensive to even get into the "media" selling/distributing game and to become a AUTHORIZED distributor, is a task MOST normal people will NEVER be able to accomplish...unless you win the lottery of course~ :)

hope that clarifies for you slightly, i've been away from AD due to the holiday season, but i thought i would shed some light on your question before X-mas...LOL

i might temporarily change my name to SantaTY for a few days~ :)

happy holidays all~

SantaTY~

p.s. @gonwk i would not suggest "stacking" them on top of each other (the binders you have) as common sense can tell you that with so many dvds, the weight can become quite immense...that "hanging by ring-holder" idea is good and will definitely "do the job", however, i hope your walls are not hollow and you have some heavy duty "hangers/hooks" to hang them by~ it would be a shame to come back and see a big hole in your wall due to the weight of your binders ripping the drywall clear off! LOL

I store all mine vertically in whether it be jewel cases or ring binders. They are in a bookcase with tinted glass doors so no light gets in and so far have not had one that does not play. Just watched It's a Wonderful Life, to get in the Xmas spirit. Did this backup 3 yrs ago using Xcopy, the one with the nag screen, and it still plays beautifully. Did it on a Verbatim disk, which at that time media was costing an arm, leg and several other body parts. But it shows that quality media does hold up. I know it will still play again next Xmas.

I really like the ultra clear/ ultra slim poly cases, the ones DON'T use the cover art. I store vertical in shoes boxes, alphabetically, with just enough room that I can flip through them and read the label. Cases similar to the one below.

I use a sharpie type pen that says CD/DVD marker on it. I also like fine tip.

@Arniebear, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without "A Wonderful Life", the original "Miracle on 34th Street" and of course "A Christmas Carol" with Alistair Sims (don't get the colorized version).

@mackdl

I know what you mean about the Xmas movies you just got to watch. Got several versions of old Ebenezeer and of course my personal favorite Christmas Vacation, I still laugh at the fried kitty, mine keeps climbing the tree and I keep waiting.

Arniebear,

I also love "Christmas Vacation" and silly "Grinch" with Jim Carey (he made the PERFECT grinch)

My middle kid wouldn't watch Mickey Mouse's "Christmas Carol", gave him nightmares LOL.
