those sony's at CC look tempting if MIJ though, the 16x are not TY's so you know, they code out as SONY D21, still not bad but when i did my scans after burning something were lower than the TY's, but 8x MIJ are TY.

Movies 27: Looks like your still hooked on those maxells, LOL
Ever going back to memosux media?
Meltstorm:
I ran into a pack of those japanese sony +16x. I ran a few through dvd infopro and these showed a lot more errors on them.I didn't even realize they were 16x until I was down to my last 4 or 5.
Here's an 8x scan:
Here's a verbatim +16x that was burned at 12x and those MCC-004 are very sweet:

nice scans man :), yeah i am staying away from those sony's as well that is the 16x, even though they are MIJ, if CC has the sony 8x MIJ i will get some, TY addiction is increasing :). i think verbs are the only media MIT that has the highest quality scans consistently in my experience, i like those very much.

Hey guys, sorry for not having a sales thread up. I was gone, but I'll have one up for next week, probably by Thursday.
@movies27
Memorex's dvd burners definitely suck. I had a Plextor that I accidentally broke by kicking the tray when it was out so I wanted to go by a cheap one and a memorex was on sale, but the thing crapped out 3 months later(now). I called tech support and they didn't even ask what was wrong just said send it in and we'll send a new one, so they must know their burners suck. Anyways haven't gotten my new one back but I figured out that I could open my Plextor and put the tray back on myself so now I'm back in business.

I look for Made in Japan on every wrapper of sony/fuji/and maxell. I accidentally picked up a spindle of sony +16x speed and I have no clue how I did it. I didn't even realize it until I went looking at the TG-00xxxx code on the bottom . It didn't have one. These were made in Japan-SonyD21!
Here's a scan of one of them at 8x burn. Another 4x burn was still scary:

and u know it man :), TY has earned my respect long ago,but i am barely coming out of the closet and like how i feel :)
@ saugmon
I think it's a good indication to say that the Sony coding D21 MIJ are not very good, almost crappy, hate to say it, but its true.
Shelf wise options are diminishing, pretty soon we all be buying TY's online until maybe they become like the forbidden fruit :) later guys.

Heres a 6x burn of Sony D-21 media i got it under the MIT by mistake also. Its ok, but not Tys like i was looking for.
First scan i had a 95 quality score going with 2 PIFs and then at about 2.75gb a big spike hit, took the disc out and looked at it very closely. A small speck of fiber or something was on the disc. Removed it and the above scan came out. Heres the bad scan of same disc:
And the thing must have gotten on the disc when being moved from bottom to top drive. Ok, so i live in a cave..

@ MaxBurn
the Sony +r x16 should be MIJ,but maybe they ousourced them to MIT already. my scans with this media are very inconsistent, so i decided to back up less important stuff on them until i finish the spindle.
i am going to stop by CC today after work and check those sony's for 14.99 if they are 16x i will be passing, i have enough to get me by the next best sale, like verbs :)
P.S. i always buy a spindle with so-so media, i use it when friends and third parties want me to burn something for them, i like to give them a little time bomb :)

You should have picked up some of those playos at staples the other week. 50 packs for around $5
That kind of price on crap media is ok. Now when someone pays 30 cents+ on hp/memosux/or tdk cmags, that's a big ripoff!

docTY, since you are the expert on the TYs, this question is for you! I purchased some sony DVD-R MIJ from BB and they coded out as Sony08D1. I know these are not TYs, but how is their quality? Should I throw them to the wolves and just purchase some TYs online? What is your honest opinion? Thanks in advance for the help!!

I can help answer the sonyo8D1 question. These are actually made in both japan and taiwan. Sony uses the same code on some of their dash format that are manufactured in different countries. Their dash 4x were made in both taiwan and austria and complete rubbish.
Their japanese 08D1,still very good media. Lately there, have been a slew of posts that they are Ty-g02.
I burned a few spindles of Sony08D1 with 1 small issue.My only issue is some of my stand alone players won't recognize my benq dash backups. Compatability,not media quality.
peteacher: You should be ok with them. Still excellent,high quality media. I know a few lite-on owners who swear by them, not at them, LOL

I saw this thread over at CD Freaks and thought I'd give it a try. It says that you can identify the Sony MIJ 8X DVD-R 50 packs of TY's (TYG02), that have surfaced recently by checking the shape of the top spacer. If it is octagonal shaped it is TY media and if it is round it is Sony media. I don't have a Circuit City near me so I went to Staples to see if I could get them to PM Circuit City's sale price of $14.99. Well they didn't have pack with the octagonal spacers there, so I headed over to Wal-mart.
I got to Wal-mart and there they were....50 packs of -R's with the octagonal spacers. Regular price was $25 but got them for $14.99 with the PM.
I opened up the 50 pack and checked the inner ring code and it was GG000xxx. Yeah TY's....checked the media code and they are TYG02's.
I think this spacer thing works!!! Here is the link

Hello All, Just to let everyone know my experience with DVD+R SONY D-21 16x media. I have burned about 25 of these so far at 4x and 8x with no bad burns, no playback problems in my standalones. So far so good or maybe just luck who knows? I probably wont get anymore unless i hear a lot of positives like mine? Just my input. /unjust

@peteacher
saugmon covered it VERY nicely on my behalf, thanks buddy~ :) he has nailed it right on the dot, the "older" Sony MIJ 8x DVD-R were the Sony coded ones as you mentioned above, this held true on BOTH the MIT and MIJ spindles, it was only recently that many people were reporting the TYG02s in the MIJ~ :) i would keep them, they are still pretty good, no need to feed the wolves on the Sony 8x media~
@95max
very interesting find, if you don't mind, i'm going to copy your post and put it in my TY thread, naturally giving you credit for your info~ :) so, the "octogonal" spacer at the top signifies the TYs? whereas the "circular" spacer codes out with the Sony MID? very good info, i commend you for that~ :)
p.s. if you do want me to remove your post, let me know; i just feel it's worthy to let everyone who is interested in finding the Taiyo Yudens locally to benefit from your info~ :)
it will be found also here:

that's interesting saugmon, as MY Sony 8x DVD+R MIJ 50 pack have the CIRCLE styrofoam spacer on top, they too are the YUDEN000T02 coded :)
Quote: My sony +1x-8x yuden000-T02 has the octagon shaped styrafoam spacer.
i guess the "octagon" spacer for the 8x DVD-R format Sony MIJ might be the "clincher" ? actually, i'm looking at all 6 (six) 50-pack spindles of my Sony 8x DVD+R MIJ that i purchased at BestBuy on sale few weeks ago and they ALL have the "circle" spacer on the top...perhaps the "spacer-shape" doesn't apply to the DVD+R format locally? ie. as an indication that they are Taiyo Yuden produced...

All the Sony 8X MIJ +R's at the Wal-mart I visited had the octagonal spacer also. The MIJ +-R's at Staples all had the round spacer. I'm hoping that when Staples gets some new stock, we will see the octagonal spacers and the -R TY's.

@95Max, many thanks for the tip...
Just went to Wal-Mart and perused the 20 or so spindles of Sony 8X -Rs and only 1 had the octagonal spacer. I bought it and it checked out as TYG02. It was MIJ; all the other Sony 8X -Rs 8x were MIT and had round spacers.

I just saw a flyer at work and the drugstore chain called Rite-Aid has 25 packs of Fuji on sale for $9.99
Still pricey,but if anyone needed any media in a hurry,there they are.

I contracted sony about who actaually OEM's = Makes their MIJ 8X Dvd media and they did answer that they are indeed taiyo yuden " Sony 8X DVD-R media (Made in Japan)

I bought two 50 count containers of your Sony 8X DVD-R media (Made in Japan) at a local retailer ! BESTBUY ! and was just curious as to when sony started manufacturing their own DVD media? I am aware that there are several DVD media Manufacturers /plants in Japan but that none as far as I know of are Sony ! Has sony built a new plant ? Just curious because most companies Don't actaully manufacture there own media - They outsource / or contract witha media mfr. Such as Taiyo Yuden , TDK , CMC ect... If this is what your doing -Who's making them for you? Thanks _ Happy Holidays !!!!!!!
