If you dont like any of those programs try
xvid4psp
http://pspupdates.qj.net/XviD4PSP-The-PSP-Video-Audio-Converter-S...

or VirtualDub - just make sure in virtual dub for filters you go to resize and put 480X272

As long as you are encoding(or converting) AVI into MP4,

you are DOOMED.

Quality of MP4 format simply lower than those of AVI and others.

If you want a good quality movie in PSP, you have to encode AVIs

into simply smaller AVI with proper bitrate to fit the screen and

machine power of PSP.

MP4 just doesn't cut it.

There are application that enables PSP to run AVI movies.

It doesn't matter what program u r using, if u r converting AVI

into MP4, u suffer quality loss.

sup?

Yeah we know, using besweet an vdub.Play them with PSPLAYERMT.
H.264/AVC is a more advanced codec than XVID or DIVX, i would normally rip VOB,s to AVI. like u said encoding from AVI to MP4 is not good unless u use pass through encoding, its hard to get good quailty from an already compressed file, it wil either be the same or worse.
Stick to ripping VOB,s an converting them.

Make sure you have WinRar
you will need it to extract those files

Firstly pick an encoder to use i suggest Xvid4PSP if your not an advanced user.

For the encoder youd need to extract it with WinRAR, then install it on windows.

For the player,
copy the two folders PSPLAYERMT and PSPLAYERMT%
into your psp in the PSP\GAME folder
