i tried DVDshrink and it would not read Just the main movie, do i need Plug-ins?.. im sorry im new to this , and im Pisse* i can't even back up my own movies!! all i need is the MAIN movie everything else SUX.

@ponchi1, I don't know about everyone else but CloneDVD2 though it works well with AnyDVD, I have run into some strange low compression issues. It manages to back up the movie, but the compression rate was sometimes awful if I were to keep the DVD's extra features or menu. Don't get me wrong, I use it, But it's just not my 1st choice. I prefer to used Nero Recode2 instead. Try it, you might feel the same.:P

You need to run AnyDVD (free for 21 days) in the background with Shrink
or rip w/ dvdfab decrypter (free) then open those files in shrink.

Recode I agree is better in the quality/compression part but the version I have w/ 6 freezes or throws an error when trying to backup a ARccOS or Ripguard movie even with the latest AnyDVD.
So I just used CloneDVD and AnyDVD - movie only preserving the menu and 1 audio - no compression.

See my post above for what to use.
This movie has Sony's ARccOS and Puppetlock along with 3 bad sectors.
Shrink or 1 click can't do it alone with this protection.

Let me say this to everyone that reads this.....
STOP BEING CHEAP and get AnyDVD & CloneDVD. Trust me....its the best $$ you will ever spend.
Wanna continue to experience troubles.....continue to be cheap, meanwhile, the rest of us will be issue free and ENJOY EVERY SINGLE MINUTE OF IT.
Back to your regularly scheduled channels.

Hello all i'm alittle new to this forum, but i see there are a few problems with this movie, the one i'm having ( i'm using Shrink and Decrypter) when i import it into Shrink and i try to re-Author( so i can just burn the movie) all i see is the last half of the movie.
for example on the navigation side say, main movie 1hr34min
once i select that item it changes to 11mins and starts where those kids are beating the crap out of those Thugs. but the beginning is nowhere to be found on the disk..
anyone else run into this?
any help would be great

Neither shrink or decrypter will handle this one alone. See my above post for links on what will work on this one.

That combo worked for me. Are you using the latest AnyDVD 5.9.5.6?

OK I see everyone likes AnyDVD (so do i) but I sed it with Shrink and it would NOT shrink said that Files were NOt aligned.
I notced someone said use AnyDVD an Clone DVD. I would be grateful if someone gave me a quick run down of the steps.

Damn this DVD is brutal for me. I've burned almost 300 DVDs and DVD Shrink alone works 90% of the time. If Shrink failed, I used DVDFab Decrypter and that has worked every single time...until now.
I can rip the DVD onto my HD with DVDFab. I can analyze and encode with DVD Shrink. It's just at the final burning stage. DVD Shrink ejects my blank DVD out. So I try Nero Recode which some are suggesting. Same thing - DVD is ejected and it says "power calibration error."
Noooooo!...Don't tell me I have to get AnyDVD, lol.

Can I trouble you for a more detailed instruction about Nero burning rom? Which Nero burning rom option specifically are you using since the files are in VOB format and not image format?
I've once tried burning VOB files onto a DVD-RW just by file copying alone and it ended up unreadable. I guess my DVD player didn't recognize it as a legit DVD but just a bunch of files.

from above I assumed you were using image files created by shrink.
Spend the money: AnyDVD will stop the Brutality! And all options are avaiable too.

well thank u all , i ran Vobblanker in Backround and used shrink to get just the movie, my problem was that it was NOT showing the main movie .. it was a sector problem ... but thanks again , it was Piss*ing me off soo bad ! and i started gettting scared that my DVDs i buy won't back up... b/c it is sony , but i found a way to backup my own legaly purchesed dvd. im soo releved. i was not going to even buy them if i could not back them up, anyone Agree?

Are you using the latest AnyDVD - 5.9.5.6? This should work with Shrink.
For CloneDVD you'll need to download it (free 21 day trial) from Slysoft.

AnyDVD won't solve the power calibration error. You ripped the movie now your problem is burning it. Power calibration can be caused by the blank DVD being used. So let's start there. Which brand are you using?

Well here are your options buy AnyDVD (very doubtful you would regret this purchase) or rip w/ DVD Fab decrypter as stated above.
For all those having problems with this movie that don't have AnyDVD - use Alkohol's guide for dvfab decrypter/vobblanker method (both are free). Recode can be replaced with shrink (also free). This guide gives step by step instructions on what to do:

If you have AnyDVD make sure you are using the latest version - 5.9.5.6. The latest version of AnyDVD with handle this movie with CloneDVD or Shrink. I have used both.

The problem I had burning "Hostel" with AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 was freezing at the end of the burn. In another forum, it was suggested changing the size in the 2nd screen "quality" box from "DVD-5" to Custom "4300". It worked

I agree with ponch1 & cujo007. Just get AnyDVD & CloneDVD!! It's well worth it. They're constantly updated along with the new protections. Going thru all the free programs & getting frustrated when they don't work is a waste of time. These 2 together will burn most movies with no problems.
If they don't work with this one, which in my case they didn't, then just use the latest version of dvdfab decrypter to rip it to your hard drive, and burn it with Nero. Simple as that! Problem solved, disc backed up. No need to use vobblanker, pgcedit, or fixvts as fab removes the bad sector protection, unless you want to use them to take out the previews, warning screen etc.
I'm not a big fan of shrink and it's not updated anymore anyway. And I think the reason why Clone & AnyDVD doesn't work for everyone has something to do with the type of drive used and the arrcos protection on Sony dics.

What are you guys using to make it shrink enough to fit on a 4.7gig dvd? I have ran it through shrink 2x and its still at 6.2 gigs.

Yes, it is true that HOSTEL has the latest protections encrypted from Sony's ARccOS (puppet), it has some fake structural and fake pgc as well, but it simply is just another piece of cake.
As usual, DVDFAB Decrypter (FREE) + VobBlanker (FREE) is flawless and of course the rest is history. Easy as smokin' and sippin' on a Corona.
In summary:
DVDFAB Decrypter - 12 minutes to rip
VobBlanker - 5 minutes to process and blank out other craps (FBI Warnings, rating logos/screens, unwanted previews/trailers, etc.)
Best of lucks to all and happy burning.

My friend just finished his copy with no problems. He used fab/blanker/shrink and says it works fine also.
