DVDRipGuy- You can download a Program called DVD Identifier and use it to find the codes ! In general Japanese made media is considered better than Taiwan Made Media ! There are some exceptions to this generalization though ! Namely Verbatim Brand Which though made in taiwan is Some of the best Media Made right there with Taiyo Yuden ! And also Ritek & Ricohjpn manufactured Media Often under other Brand names -Like Officedepot , Maxell , Tdk ect... Ritek Is excellent Maybe not in the same league with the Taiyo Yuden or Verbatims But still very good ! Ricohjpns Are good too from what I've heard & my Limited experience with them! And these are all from TAIWAN! The main thing is Quality Control& Quality product ! If you have those two then you could make great media anywhere that is sufficiently Technologigally advanced & set up to Do so ! Avoid anything made by CMC - Sold under various Major Brand names ! also avoid any any media make in Hong Kong = Crap - Japanese made media SONY/Taiyo Yuden, Taiyo Yudens , or Maxells MIj are Good Choices - In Taiwan made media - Ritek( Officedepot,Maxells, Fuji's ? ) Sony Made In Taiwans are also good But The japanese should be better ! Verabtims ( Primo Media #1) & ricohjpns ( also Decent ) As they say in a commercial somewhere " put The Goodstuff onThe Goodstuff !!" You'll thank yourself later Trust me as The Politicians say LOL! Good luck with your prohjects & Happy Burning Ciao!
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY EVERYONE- & THANKS TO OUR VETERANS & MILLITARY!!

I'm just a tad confused (seems to be my normal state). I bought the Office Depot brand DVD+R 50 pack on sale a couple of weeks ago during the buy 1 get 1 free deal. Haven't used one yet, but they ID out as Ritek, media ID P16. Seems that I read somewhere in here that these were not all that good, but I can't find where I read that. Is this true? Thanks.

The media code can only be found by putting the disk in the drive and using a program like IMGburn or DVDInfoPro to get that, although I believe all Made in Japan Sony 8x is TY Made. All I got were!

Also, my local Target is selling Sony DVD+R 8x MIJ, 25 packs for $7.99 this week. This is the first time I've seen MIJs in a 25 pack. Went to another Target and their stock with the same specs were MITs.

BEWARE
So far every Maxell DVD+R 8X Made in Taiwan I have bought has coded Ritek, but 16X Maxell DVD+R Made in Taiwan are starting to code CMC. Don't know if it's a local thing.
If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

Download and run DVD Decrypter or DVDinfo pro. Either one will tell you a disc's media code.

I bought the BestBuy Sony's (DVD-R) 50 pack for $14.99. It's interesting because they are "Made in Japan" and a scan shows the following: TYG03. However, despite the label stating they are 1x-16x... they only show up as 8x max on my drive and in the Nero Info Tool???

looks like ya got the 16x DVD-R Taiyo Yudens there...hehe, reason for the 8x max is probably due to your drive's firmware, ya need to update your firmware as i assume they will have newer write strategies for this newer media, your current firmware only supports up to 8x in this case...what drive model/manufacturer you have there (ur burner...ie. Sony, Nec, Pioneer, Benq, Liteon, Plextor, etc..and model #)? updated firmware is a MUST to really optimize burning on these 16x DVD-R TYs :) (even though i recommend you burn @8x MAX for these particular TYG03s)

Thanks PAL but actually the firmware is fine. It works (reads) fine with my 16x Verbatim's and 16x Fuji's. I have a LiteOn and HP drive/burners. I just tried it in both drives just now to double check. It's just these Sony's. I think they were packaged incorrectly. And thanks, yes I always burn at 1/2 speed of label. I actually wanted the +R's but they were 'labeled' Made in Taiwan. No biggie really, just use them for spares or data/music files. I always use my Verb's and Fuji's for back-ups.

I think you should use your Fuji's for spares or data/music files and your Verb's and TY's for backups. That's just an opinion.

Don't think Fujis are bad. Some Fuji discs are absolutely great.

Correct Mr_Pink,
The Fuji DVD+R 8X MIJs are Taiyo Yudens. YUDEN000 T02
Sweet! Granted, these are hard to find these days though. Just like the Sony DVD+R 8X MIJs. Also Taiyo Yudens. Same code.
These are "Top of the line media".
Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

LOL
good observations by all, it's too bad you live in "media hell" hermes...don't know what else to say to that! :)
if it works, it works...i don't know how good HP firmwares are, since i've never owned an HP drive (ok, i have, but this was YEARS ago before dvd burners were even available and i have an old external HP cd-burner) LOL...but i do own MANY Liteon drives...their firmware is usually "decent" and their newer updates include new MID tables and strats for the newer media...but could stand for some improvement~ :) just go with what works FOR YOU personally~

And while we're on the topic... I backed up my first movie on a Dual-Layer disc (Verbatim) today. I followed the guide here (read ISO then write ISO) using DVD Decrypter. Burned it using my 'HP' burner and very nervously tested it out on my Daewoo player (for the T.V.) and it worked great! Took about 45 minutes to burn as I can only burn at 2.4x. I was a little nervous since it took an extra minute or two to complete the process even though the software (DVDDecrypter)said "Finished." BTW, the Verbatim disc had burn options up to 8x.

To whoever wants to know: Sony DVD+R 16X Made in Japan, round white spacer, 50 pack spindles code as: SONY D21
Darn, I was hoping they were YUDEN000 T03. Oh well. I said I would post results when I got some. Back to Best Buy they go to exchange for some Verbatim DVD+R 16X!
Hey Docty~, ever tried these SONY D21?

@ty533,
I get Circuit City to price match 110% all the time on Best Buy's Ads.
They never have a problem with it either. Just last week I bought 2 50 packs of Sony DVD+R 8X MIJ(Genuine TYs!) for $12.49 per 50 pack after price match. That's 25 bucks for 100! I don't know what the problem is where you went, but I think I would find out.
"Instant Rebate" just means they took the $$$$ off in store. There is no reson that they should not price match Best Buy as long as they are in the same city/town.
Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

Quote: Hey Docty~, ever tried these SONY D21?
of course i have~ :) ya want me HONEST recommendation/opinion on them? hehehe or you want my "sugar-coated" version?
anyways, kidding aside, they are very DECENT discs, while not giving ME the best quality scan scores (low 90s-95 Maximum after about 20 burns so my Benq can "learn" the media, i'm not overly impressed), my PERSONAL opinion of them are just a notch below the 16x DVD+R MIT Verbatim MCC004 media~ :) with that being said, the SonyD21 on MY setup is also a notch below the YUDEN000T03s, this is from MY OWN experiences, diff. people might have BETTER results w/ the SONYD21 depending on THEIR burner of choice + firmware~ :) i PERSONALLY will not buy any more of the Sony 16x rated discs, regardless of country of origin, or format...but that's just ME and MY opinion only...
good to see ya around bunny! *hoppin' away now*
