I tried to back-up doom using the imgburn program and could not figure out how to use it. When I downloaded the program there were a few differnt programs, I downloaded the one that said dvd. I went ahead and backed it up using dvdcloner 3 and the verbatims on a movie only and it did fine. Can someone give me some guidance on how to use the imgburn program and did I download the proper program? Thank You!!

Hey emsdad
If you give me a few - I'll help you thru imgburn - it's mainly a burning program and will also now build an iso from a video_ts folder.
In the mean time fill me in on what other apps besides DVD Cloner(like Nero, DVD Decrypter, AnyDVD etc) you have too.
When you went to download ImgBurn you would have picked one of the mirror sites at the top after clicking 'click here to download'- so you may have dl the wrong thing.
Here's a driect link:

well, does this mean u haven't shrunk the movie yet, u cant shrink the movie with ImgBurn, it is only a Burning program.
u have to use a program like shrink or Nero recode to make the movie fit on a SL(4.7G) disk before u try to burn.
here are a whole bunch of guides
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/guides.htm
if u r trying to burn a Video_TS folder then do this

@300bowler
great guide!
@emsdad
Since have AnyDVD I would add Shrink (free)- good combo for backing up movies - there are guides in the link 300bowler gave.
You could have Shrink create an iso then open imgburn to burn it.
Open imgburn (have AnyDVD off) - mode should be in write then pick the iso, burn speed & burn.
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_...
Or you can auto burn w/ decrypter. Another free program - by the same guy as imgburn but rips also and can use AnyDVD with - just need to change a few settings if using it to rip.
To have it autoburn - open decrypter then mode>iso>write. Pick the drive under destination and set the burn speed. Close. Then in Shrink after you click 'backup' under 'select target device' pick 'iso image w/ dvd decrypter'.

These programs we listed are pretty problem free. All free too but AnyDVD.
Good to here you had a successful backup too!

@300bowler
Yeah I thought the same thing.
I think I may end up using ImgBurn more now w/ this new option than programs I paid for :)
You're welcome too - it's great to see members taking the time to do the screen prints and guides to help others. Good work!

Well Binkie and 300 I ripped it with shrink and backed it up with the imgburn and it worked. I do have 2 questions: On one of them it had the compression rate with like a slide bar. What exactly is that and do I leave it or move it? The other is when imgburn gets to 100% it ejects the dvd and then pulls the tray back in and resumes, why? The first one I did I caught it and took out the movie with no problems, the second time I let it run thru again and I got the same results. I noticed on the imgburn program there are some check boxes and one says eject, should I check that?

to get a better picture u want the slider more to the right, so the higher the Compression # the better. LESS compression=better pic quality. here some pics too help

for the second ques. not sure but uncheck these and see what happens

I have noticed that on the movies that I have done have had between 65-80%. I have not messed with it and the pic. quality is great. I think I finally have something that works.......the media I believe also made a BIG difference. Once again Thank You Tremendously!!

I usually keep mine in the 70 - 80% range - playing on a 37" looks good to me ;)
Yep media can make all the difference.
The tray opening and closing after the burn in ImgBurn happens when you have the verify option checked. The verify options matches the data on the disc to the file(s) you burned
You can uncheck that opinion if you like. I rarely verify mine - rely on playback mainly.
Glad to hear you are happily burning!!

Well I do not know what happend but I lost everything. It wouldn't load past the windows prompt, and wouldn't load under safe mode. I had to run the back-up disk and reinstall all my driver,etc. I have the machine up and running again but all info is lost. I backed up The Cavern by Sony that I just bought and Bam end game. I have heard that sony has developed something that crashes your computer if you try to back them up. Is there any truth in this?

i dont think that is true, i have done all of the new sony movies and have not had one problem, as many other people here at AD have not had any issues with sony crashing a PC were it wont load up.
However to do a backup of a new sony movie u cant use DVD Decrypter by itself BC it cant handle the protection, so u have to use DVDFab decrypter to rip to HDD than use VobBlanker if u get errors in shrink.
Or
u can use a program called Ripit4Me that uses DVD Decrypter with help from othe programs

I wonder what caused it to crash? Everyhting is up now after a little head scratching, I just lost all of my ipod music. I started again and downloaded imgburn, DVD Shrink and AnyDVD. I backed-up shaggy dog and it worked great.

Another good thing to do is backup all ur important files on a DVD, as i have all my MP3 music files on two DVDs just in case.

Yep I don't think it was a Sony movie either that did the crash like 300bowler said. If Sony had that power w/ DVD's I'd be sol and reformatting all the time:)
Are you doing regular maintenance on the the laptop?
Like running anitvirus, spyware, have a firewall running while online?
Do the virus/spyware scans regularly?
How about disc cleanups and defrags?
You might also want to do a chkdsc/scandisc to check & fix the hard drive.
Laptops don't have the best airflow - and can overheat easier. Shrink is pretty cpu intensive also. No mutlitasking and shut down any unnecessary processes when doing the dvd burning thing.
Using a cooling pad can help too.

I have a good anti virus(norton system works) I just did a defrag and complete system scan. It could have been an overheating problem. Its just I was talking to a freind of mine who was telling me about the sony thing and the first movie I did that was sony.......it crashed.......go figure the luck. Like I said I am learning all this and when I am told something like that and then it happens I start thinking what have I done. Either way I have been wanting to buy a new laptop and now I will. I am going to dedicate this one for strictly backing up. What is a good laptop for gaming,and surfing?

Hmmm I would get a PC for backups - the drives in laptops ain't that great. For pc's you can get much better ones. Then there's the overheating/airflow bit. Plus a pc w/ better specs is cheaper than a lappy.
I use my laptop for surfing and sometimes burning. My pc's do most of my burning. I have more flexible having 2 drives in the pc's for burning. Just my 2 cents.
A lappy for gaming - might want to look at Dell - last time I looked (almost a year though) they had one geared more towards gaming.
I'm not much of a gamer - I have an HP - I think I drove the guy at best buy nuts doing all the comparisons on the different models :)
