Okay, I've had my PSP for about 2 years now, and now, the PSP's laser is glowing (the red light), but I think the laser is having trouble moving back and fourth... I hear these cranking sounds, that don't sound like the typical cranking sounds. Sorta of like "de de de de de daaa" and then it repeats. I need help, please. My psp won't load umd's either. It looks to me like the laser gear isnt catching the rail and its jsut slips and makes noise.

First thanks for the post, it's very helpful.
Here's my laser issue:
1. Laser works (red beam is present)
2. Gear appears to work (it sits parallel to the tray against the UMD spinner thingy, if I slide it to the other side & close the door it repositions itself back against the spinner)
However, when I put any UMD in the drive it just repeatedly tries to read it but never recognizes it. The only noise is it makes is a faint one (the gear moving or the disc spinning?), the noise repeats itself every second and doesn't stop until I eject the UMD.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

For those people who dropped their PSP, and found their laser is working, and their motor is working by reading the first post on this thread. (thank you Stuckonit)
I think its b/c of the laser being misplaced. so than I found this thread first (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/373279). I found that for some people who did the "move the laser to its original place using a pen or some other object" worked for them, and or others it didn't work. For me it didn't work for the first 5-7 times moving the laser but I did not lose hope. Finally I got it to work.
So the reason why I'm writing this is b/c for those who tried to move the laser to the "right" place, Try Again. I found the the right place of the laser is not the way left of the tray (beside the spin thing), its about 2-3 clicks to the right of it.
The picture on the 2nd page of the thread above doesn't help at all b/c you have the know the exact placement of the laser. It just gives you an idea where it's suppose to be.

much love xeviOus, I can't believe my UMD works again!
Tried it several times, about the 5th try it worked! The "spot" where you need to leave the laser is just off center, towards the spindle mechanism.
Wow, very very happy :)
Thanks xeviOus!

Check you UMD disc out. Check the UMD for the plastic being loose or cracked because typically if the center plastic is pushed in or touching the mini disc inside it wont load. If it is broken from the bottom of the UMD gently push it up to re-align the clear plastic cover. WARNING IF YOU PUSH TO HARD IT WILL COMPLETELY BREAK THE UMD. I know my son's PSP i just bought was doing the same thing and because i had mines for a while and had it happen to me that works. The only question i have is does other UMD's work or its all of them. Also check for finger prints on the open section.

My psp is not reading any umds, plus when i turn it on (no umd in)
everything goes slow. I would have to wait like 10 seconds for a folder/category to open up. After 5 mins or so i get an error message saying the umd cud not be read. whats wrong with it?
