Well - this is the first DVD where I haven't been able to use some combination of DVD Decrypter, DVD FabDecrypter, and Shrink to back up the main title. And I've used some pretty bizarre combinations successfully in the past.
The main WS title is TS 2, and TS 11 is also worth adding in. DVD Decrpter appears useless. DVD FabDecrypter 2.985Beta seems to do its job decrypting, and Shrink allows you to re-author with TS 2 and 11. Problem is in encoding - the Shrink buffer just keeps increasing till you run out of memory.
Unless someone has some brilliant idea how to use those 3 apps to backup TS 2 of this DVD, I guess I'll just have start using ripit4me, which apprently does work on this DVD. Or maybe I'll just wait until the DVD Fab people put out another version that solves the problem.

@Grampaw
Have you tried the 'non beta' version of dvdfab decrypter - 2.9.8.3?
This version worked on Silent Hill - same deal but 2 or 3 more bad sectors than Silent Hill had. From the little I read the beta version couldn't do it. May want to give that a shot.
You can also try running those files thru VobBlanker (free):

RipIt4Me may seem a bit intimidating but not that bad at all!
Keep us posted

i was able to back it up using DVDFab decrypter, DVD Decrypter, VobBlanker and Shrink.
1. ran it on Fab, it got stuck somewhere but it did most of it so I canceled whatever it was stuck on.
2. ran it on Decrypter in the same directory just to get the missing file(s), click "no to all" when it asks if u want to replace the duplicate files. that was successful.
3. got rid of crap with VobBlanker. (two of the files i blanked was the same file that gave me error on fab i think).
4. burned on shrink without incident.
tested it on my dvd player and it played fine.
i wonder if i could have skipped the Fab and just started with DVD Decrypter.... but that's what i started with so...

yep, i used the two day old ripit4me and that worked, so i'm pretty sure the newer (yesterday)(oh oh, just checked... another new version today!) version will work too. if you watch what the fixvts does while using ripit4me, you will see that it has a lot to deal with, which is why even if dvdfab did decrypt properly, without using VobBlanker to correct other problems i seriously doubt shrink or anything will be able to handle it. (i noticed that you didn't mention using blanker, just fab and shrink...). you already have and are familiar with dvddecrypter and shrink, so all you really need to add to ripit4me is fixvts... that should take only a couple of minutes. you'll have your perfect backup copy shortly after that...

I'll try Binkie7's advice tonight when I get home from work - i.e. use DVD Fab 2.9.8.3 instead of the 2.9.8.5 Beta. That approach dawned on me after I sent my request for help (no "afterdawn" pun intended). That Beta version was for some specific problem with "Inside Man" I seem to remember.
Obviously some version of DVD Fab does work since DVD Fab is the decrypting engine of Ripit4me. Anyway, I'm just trying to keep my streak going of only using DVD Decrypter, DVD Fab, and Shrink as my encoding apps for any and all DVDs. And then I always use Imgburn to burn the resulting ISO file.

let us know what happens using the non-beta dvdfab. because there are so many (intentional anti-copy) "structural" problems though, i'll be surprised if fab alone will prepare something suitable for shrink to handle, but i don't know. VobBlanker is quick (about 5 minutes) and easy to use (click "process"), and should do the job.
ripit4me uses dvddecrypter, not dvd fabdecrypter, which is why i mentioned that since you are already are familiar with dvddecrypter that all you'd have to add to use ripit4me is fixvts. like i said, i know that ripit4me works on this movie because that is what i used.
please let us know what you do and how it works.

Reporting in, as requested, on my further attempts to backup this DVD.
I tried the latest non-Beta version of DVD Fab, 2.9.8.3, which gave me the same problem as before when I got to Shrink - i.e. filling up the buffer and running out of memory.
I tried a few more options with DVDDecrypter to no avail - finally gave up. I couldn't find a PSL file either.
I downloaded and installed DVD Fab 3.0.0.1 Beta - which just came out today. This version has a completely new interface and new engine. It also now has modes with options - DVD to DVD mode has Full Disc, Main Movie, Split (to 2 discs), Customize, and Clone options, while DVD to Mobile mode has generic, IPOD, and PSP options. Worth checking out if you're a DVD Fab fan. Anyway, this new version was specifically supposed to handle the "Shrink out of memory" problem, however the ripping step died on VTS_02_03.VOB, so I never even got to the Shrink step.
So I figured I'd met my match using DVD Decrypter, DVD Fab, and Shrink combinations. So I downloaded ripit4me, installed it, and then tried it with the one click option. DVD Decrypter created and loaded the PSL file, started decrypting, then couldn't read 3 files, VTSs 26, 27, 28 giving me the old "abort, retry, ignore" dialog box. I chose "abort" with the "save file" option for each title, and Decrypter went it's merry way decrypting the remaining files.
I'm not familiar with fixvts at all - it seemed to be doing something complicated with screens whizzing by, eventually deleting VTSs 26, 27, 28 and opening Shrink. Once I was in good Shrink, I reauthored for Title 2, the WS main movie, followed by Title 12, the making-of extra, encoded the two titles as an ISO file, opened Imgburn to burn, and then finally had my backup.
I really like ripit4me and will add it to my arsenal of backup tools. It sure is easy to use...

thanks for the report. it's helpful to people having a similar problem to know exactly what people tried and the results they got... hopefully this eventually leads everyone to find an solution that works for them.
glad you got your backup and that you like ripit4me. that "one click mode" is pretty simple, huh?
thanks for the info re the new beta version of dvdfab... think i'll wait for the non-beta version.
so you never tried VobBlanker? post-fab, pre-shrink? it would have been doing all the things you noticed fixvts doing in ripit4me, and i'm guessing it would have corrected all those structural issues just like fixvts did... it has been a very reliable tool.
thanks again for the report, and congratulations on your success and discovery of a new useful tool.

OK, OK, a BIG mea culpa here--I burn frequentlym but as it turns out not many Sony ARCCOS-protected DVDs? So FabDecrypter usually has worked for those. BUT BUT BUT because I don't run into problems often, I never check for more recent versions of these programs--actually don't know HOW often they are re-furbished and fancied-up. SO, long story short, the NEWEST version of dvd FabDecrypter had no probelm decoding Friends with Money, and now I feel stupid for even starting this string! I apologize!

Mixwell, Thought I used the latest version of DVD Fab, 2.9.8.3 in my attempts to backup. It decrypted the DVD fine - my problem was trying to encode using Shrink on the DVD Fab files without running out of Shrink buffer memory. It is possible I screwed up somewhere on the DVD Fab version, I was running so many DVD Fab versions. I ended up finally installing ripit4me which does simplify backingup quite a bit.

Run them files through VobBlanker after DVDFab!!!
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154
Get in the habit because not only does it help the few movies that you really need it, the 5 minitues it takes sorting and fixing files saves time on your final burning program because it doesnt have to do the work.

I too was having the same problems using RipIt4Me.....where DVDdecrypter was giving me the errors. I had to switch from my laptop to my desktop drive and it worked just fine...no read errors. Put it back in my laptop.....nothing but read errors. I think it could be mastering errors. I've noticed other people on other forums having the same issue.

@Deadrum33 - thanks for the link to VobBlanker guide thread. I'll start using VobBlanker after DVD Fab from now on.
Usually I just use Shrink, which works by itself 90% of the time, since I just backup the main title and maybe a few titlesets with deleted scenes or making-of features - the novelty of a menu wore off a long time ago, and those previews, warning screens, etc. are worthless.
So now if it's a "problem" DVD (i.e. Sony or Hollywood blockbuster DVD), I'll use either the DVD Fab > VobBlanker > Shrink > Imgburn approach, or alternatively the ripit4me > imgburn approach, So I can just get the movie and any extras worth backing up.

I couldnt have said it better myself. Even though I use AnyDVD in the backround there are still a few titles that Shrink and Nero wont "see" so I need VobBlanker. If using nothing but free programs for burning its needed even more.

And for all you AnyDVD lovers. I talked to a friend the yesterday who has been having great success using VobBlanker with AnyDVD running to copy from disc to harddrive. In short making it a 1 step process to remove the ads and other useless stuff while copying.

He loads the IFO from disc, selects a precreated folder on his harddrive as output, chooses which ads and extra freatures he wants to blank out, and lets it run. I watched him do it to 2 movies tonight. Friends with money was one of them. I couldn't find anything else set up differently. I don't have AnyDVD on my puter so I can't say I could duplicate his results here at home but I did see him do it with his.

I'm going to have to try the AnyDVD & voblanker method on United 93 and see how it goes.
This is what copy protection it has.
Found & removed wrong DVD structure!
Found & removed Macrovision RipGuard protection!
Found & removed error zones between files!
Found & removed invalid VOBUs!
Found & removed invalid program from program chain!
Changed firstplay: Jump directly to Title 1! (maybe best to change this setting?)
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Found & removed 4 bad sector protections!
May take me a day or 2 to back up this way - but I'll try it. Already have a good back from AnyDVD Clone so I'll hold watching the whole thing until I do this one this way.
@Deadrum33
Never tried this way - so any guidance? What problems did you have?
Have heard of peeps doing it this way once in ahwile - just keep forgetting. Heck it's only a 30 cents discs & manybe 20 mins of my time so what the heck :) Failures oh well no biggie.

hey binkie,
just curious. what would be the advantage in using anydvd/vobblanker vs. anydvd/clonedvd2? i know you can do more editing with VobBlanker, but with clone dvd2 you can remove extras, menus, fbi warnings, unwanted soundtracks, subtitles, even edit/cut the movie to a degree, etc., and with blanker you still have to compress and burn anyway. like i said, just curious.

AnyDVD basically does the same thing Vob Blanker does (remove the bad cells etc.) so you really don't need both if your using CloneDVD 2. CloneDVD 2 with AnyDVD is the easier/faster option. if you want to use Vob Blanker try using "RipIt4Me" it incorporates DVD decrypter/VOB Blanker/FixVTS and DVD Shrink with Nero or DVD Decrypter as your burning tool in one easy to use program and its freeware

Puterman and Binkie7---When I originally tried just the VobBlanker w/AnyDVD method it was a DL disc and it seemed that Blanker wanted files faster than my drive could read the data.
That was awhile ago, before I upgraded my burnrers. Now that I was reminded, and tried again, I attempted a single layer disc and evrything worked exactly as puterman said it would. Maybe it was either my older machines specs, maybe it was something I did, but what didnt work for me once, worked for me yesterday.
