It's better to get separate AV, anti-spyware, and firewall. That's why I listed each type of product separately above. Unfortunately, there is no one, good, "do-all" suite.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

hi guys, i'm finally convinced and i'm just going to get the stuff separately, and they are:
free AVG AV
spybot (someone tell me if ad aware SE is better?)
zone alarm firewall
i'll see if all these work beautifully together. thanks everyone!

Include Ewido Anti-spyware in that and you'll have a good setup. Don't have to purchase it unless you prefer to. After the trial you won't have automatic protection and automatic update, but you can update manually and scan about once a week. Hell, not 10 minutes ago I found I had a trojan when scanning Ewido. :)
By the way, go with Spybot.

Go with Ad-Aware too. Again, Comodo is the beter firewall though ZA isn't bad. I also prefer the less-well-known stuff, as long as it's as good or better, because hackers usually set their sights only on the popular products.

i used to like Kaspersky but their recent revision has lost sight of their straightforward anti-virus approach and now has many unnecessary aspects... I have tried AVG and didnt have a problem with it, but i really like Avast! Home Edition, it seems to have a pretty good detection rate, and this may just be my imagination, but it seems to scan faster than AVG... it also has the virus recovery console which allows virused files to be replaced with thier originals, im not sure if AVG free has such a system, if someone knows post!!

Avast! does scan faster, but unless things have changed in the last six months (the last time I used it), it has a markedly inferior detection engine to Avira and maybe AVG. However, it is probably the fastest of all the major "free" products. I use Avira which is excellent though it randomly pops up a full screen when it updates, which is really irritating to some people.

what about that virus recovery console thing... as far as detection, they claim 100% for viruses in the wild... also... avast! seems to look nicer, without skins, the skins are terrible...

A big thank you to everyone who contributed! everything has just been installed, (and Norton thrown away, thank goodness) and it seems that the pc is much much faster now! again, thank you and hopefully, there won't be any problems

you have norton internet security installed right
1. Download AVG
2. Disable Internet
3. Disable Norton Anti-virus (you have to do this because AVG and norton anti-virus could conflict with each other so disable this DONT TURN IT BACK ON! unless your AVG anti-virus is off)
4. Install AVG Free
5. Restart Comp
6. Done!

@iampolly,
Plextor is correct about the software conflicts, you don't want that, but this is a thread discussing AV's, if you need help w/ your malware problems start a thread in windows spyware & virus forum, good luck.

try installing avast! and downloading a spyware program like Defender... you may have spyware which is causing problems... and AVG cannot detect spyware at all...

hehehe, i guess i'm back again. just one question: once i've done a full system virus scan with AVG free, and if it has detected some virus, will it automatically delete it, or will it put it into this vault thingie? coz everytime i do a scan, there's always one trojan virus (whatever it was called) and i can't seem to delete it! and btw, how do you delete stuff in the vault? thanks in advance! (sorry if it was such a noob question)

Go into virus vault, and empty it.
