giganews unlimited = 25$
why you pay 25$ if you can download free ? that's the point.I'm not saying usenet is bad and torrent is good. It's a matter of choice.
You can join torrentleech by an invite. You need to find an invite or wait why they open registration

You pay if you don't want to go through bother of getting invited and stuff like that to private sites. Plus there've been plenty of times I didn't see what I wanted on private sites or not enough people were seeding what I wanted. That's the kind of stuff I used to hate about IRC. You almost had to kiss someone's ass to get to the good stuff and that's not my style. I'm not gonna make some nerd feel like a big man, because he has access and I don't.
With newsgroups it's ALL there for you for the taking. There's no need for anyone's approval. There's no waiting in line, ever! Plus you get lightning fast speeds. It's a leecher's paradise. No one expects you to give back. There's a cost, but I am cool that that. To each his own.

This is the guide that explains it all. http://www.slyck.com/ng.php
For the record I use Xnews for my news reader (some say it's too complicated, but I like it) and Giganews for my newserver. If Giganews is too much, then Usenetserver is probably the best value for what you pay. It's $40 for 3 months and unlimted downloads. There goes your 400GB for less than $15 a month right there. However, it's not as reliable as Giganews and only goes back a month or so while Giganews goes back 3 months.

First, you have to be registered with their site. Second, you need a torrent program. "utorrent" is a pretty good program.
But really... you're not going to beat the speed of newsgroups. And you don't necessarily have to pay. Alot of isp's have decent retention. I use verizon and it works great for me.

i think most of you guys missed the point of my thread, newsgroups are probably great, but they are not for me. If i wanted to pay, id just run to the store and buy my games, much faster than anyother method.
Thanks to those who tried to help.

You don't have to pay for newsgroups. If you have a decent isp just use the service they provide. You're already paying for it.
Sure... you can go out and get a separate news provider and pay monthly for that on top of your monthly internet bill. But it's not necessary. It all just depends on how much downloading you do.

Check out the link Memnock gave a few posts up. That'll give you a good grasp. It's well worth the read.

Many ISPs provide newsgroup subscriptions. I used to download some games through newsgroups but there's a lot of problems involved in that. What problems you ask? Such as having to download what's provided during that particular week, lots of information can be lost and even with .par files you won't always recover everything, the download was fast but not much faster than torrents for me. The download system isn't appealing to me either, not that this has to do with download speeds or reliability, but that it isn't as new of a technology. To download a movie for example. Somebody posts it on the newsgroup, the file will be split among so many posts, let's say 300k per post, you download all the posts, then merge them together to create the movie file. That's not as intuitive as just clicking a simple torrent link and having the whole process done for you. Maybe I'm just nit picking though.
Torrents are good because you can search through many indexes, private sites have reliable speeds at 100k/sec(but 900k/sec is amazing, I never got that sorta speed on anything other than FTPing maybe) torrents are bad because the torrent will eventually die due to lack of seeders, but this really depends on the particular site.
www.torrentspy.com which is a bittorent index search is fairly good at showing what all the latest downloads are.
I use xnews for newsgroups. If you wanna see if your ISP provides you with newsgroup service go to their website and do some searching. Usually they'll have information about it in support or FAQ sections.

i tried all these private torrents and the files are never available and when they are they just download too slow for, i prefer my newsgroup, it much more stable, the files are always available, you dont have to depend on people all over the world just to hope the file will download at the speed u want. newsgroups always have the files available, always download at your MAX speed and always comes through to do thejob.. thats how i look at newsgroups... its only two worlds, newsgroups and bittorrents, ive visited bittorrents and didnt like it cuz it wasnt reliable.....

emachine,
Newsgroups themselves aren't illegal. A lot of people use newsgroups for illegal purposes, but the neither ISPs nor news providers care what anyone downloads off them. My ISP gives a has a pretty good free server that I use, but it's not enough for me. For me that free newserver is like the 32mb memory stick that came with the PSP value pack. It's cool for certain things, but not enough in the long run.
