I can't tell for sure what caused the write failure. However the media you're using is not very good.

There's little doubt that Verbatim +R DL is the best DL media and seems to be most compatible with the widest range of burners. It's possible the media is the culprit. I do not believe there are any firmware updates for that burner.
If you're backing up a DL DVD title and using AnyDVD or a similar program in the background for overcoming structural and other copy protection, it's best to just rip an ISO of the disk with DVD Decrypter. The ISO can then be burned with either DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn. Just select the MDS companion file to the ripped ISO as the source and the burner as the destination in either program in Write mode for ImgBurn or ISO Write mode for DVD Decrypter. Ripping the ISO preserves the original layer break. Both programs were written by the same person but only ImgBurn is updated. If you're authoring a DL disk, it's probably best to use ImgBurn instead of DVD Decrypter.
looks like I'm going in the right direction.. the media is HP DVD+R 2.4x 8.5g. guess i'll try verbatim, seems to be the choice by most from what i've read so far. it looked to me that the burner gave the error message when it started to burn the 2nd layer, i don't really know. i'm open for any suggestions , please. i will try the other media to see if that is the problem. once again it all started out well, got to about 65% and then froze it up ......
i've been reading these other forums so i tried something different. i ripped with DVD Decrypter and saved to my HD, i opened the ISO with Imageburn, now i get a warning : ( Optimal L1 data zone start LBA : none found !!(vts_12) The image has not been remastered correctly for burning onto a double layer (OTP track path) disc. None of these cells meet the "dvd-video spec" criteria for a potential layer break position. Do you want to continue anyway ? ) The disc is "Deal or No Deal". I was able to creat a ISO file of the disc, create a mds file, opened ImageBurn, directed it to the MDS file and that was the warning I got, I stopped there, did not want to make a coaster.. Can anyone help ? Thanks
I tried some cheap dual layer disks with my LG burner, it crapped out at the start of Layer 2, I bought some Verbatim and had no problems, perfect burns every time.
Try DVD Decrypter in ISO Write mode and see if it gives an error message. The ImgBurn message is a warning that the layer break doesn't meet its criteria, not that it won't work. An optimal layer break point is usually at a scene change/chapter break so any break in the play won't be noticed. There are a couple of ways DL DVDs are burned. One method is more susceptible to break than others. The disk you're using is one that requires that type of burn strategy I think and that may be why the message is worded as it is.
Finally, I used CloneDVD 2903 with AnyDVD 6061 in the background, using HP DL media and no tricks or anything, this is all I used, perfect burn of the DVD interactive game "deal or no deal" I wished I would have tried this route the first time. Hope this might be some help for anyone looking. I'm still gonna try the Verbatim media next trip to the store.
