And somewhat relevant addition:
I optimized couple of pages on forums and hopefully this speeds up things a bit and would hopefully minimize the number of timeouts we receive on daily basis.

Just basically some queries -- even if the gain is just 1ms per page, it amounts quite impressive performance gains when you have 1000+ guys browsing on forums at the same time :-)

Ye i bet, actually can u comment any further on my suggestion of a page of updates being an option instead of email?? like for instance i login and click "updated threads" and it shows me the threads i am subscribed to that have been updated, wouldnt that option save you guys a lot of bandwidth if you could choose it over email updates?

Umh, no... Some kind of "page of updates" will probably come at some point, but the email is the best way to keep users coming back. There are really guys that actually can forget the existance of aD if you don't remind them every now and then :-)

Loading fast for me at the minute people. Thanks Ketola and dRD.
I hope it stays like this. My opinion on the weekly newsletter, is that it is there to remind people about afterdawn :D

Glad that the tweaks seem to have helped the issue a bit.
And you're right about newsletter, but unfortunately we have appx. 50,000 registered users who DON'T subscribe to our newsletter, so we need to pull them back by reminding them every now and then :-)

Thanks. We'll keep on monitoring if the problems still occur. But basically we've done now as much as we can until we switch over to new server setup, which hopefully happens before the end of October.

Bit more tweaking to the code has been added, which should speed up significantly loading up LOOOONG threads (and therefor also speed up the whole site as processing such pages should take less resources from the server).
Code optimization continues, I damn well try to get one P4 box to run over 5M page imps a month without choking ;-)

Have their been issues as of late? Becuase I'm browsing around on a T3 here and its taking 30secs+ to load each page... or is that normal? (honest question because ive had everything from 0.001KB/s to 4000KB/s in the last two weeks i cant tell anything anymore).

It's been the same for me everywhere -- AfterDawn and elsewhere. Usually the first page takes anything from 5 to 20 seconds to open, but subsequent pageloads are much faster (<5 seconds). Still they're often much too slow.
I don't really know where to put the blame. At least at aD neither the network load nor the CPU load should be a significant factor.

Debug data for the thread I'm replying now:
Execution Time
75 milliseconds
...so, shouldnt take that long :-) But it actually seems that ad server seems to choke every now and then a bit and cause some weird loading issues, I'll start monitoring it more closely.
