If you do a partition setup, you can save yourself some cash... But if you aren't able/comfortable, I can definitely understand. It was kind of weird the first time I did partitions... ack!

Just save yourself the time ... I wouldn't suggest that anyone not familiar with it install a second OS on a second partition - there's grave danger of screwing up your existing OS if not done correctly ... and you can always use the 2nd HDD for extra storage on the other OS ... You can get an 80gb cheap at www.newegg.com - stick with the easy way of doing it and save your data, as I suggested to begin with!!

No, its not about whether or not you can create a partition, its a) whether vista will actually install on the 2nd partition (I had 100% reformat a drive with a 2nd partition so vista would install) and b) its about whether you are or are not comfortable with installing a 2nd OS on a 2nd partition, and if you want to take the chance of selecting the wrong partition and erasing your old windows!!! This is called experience ... and a n00b shouldn't be messing with stuff like that if they don't know how to do it!

True. I guess it just seems elementary to me, because I've been doing it since I was about twelve. lol. But I'm an unusual case, which goes without saying.

It's probably best in this case to go with the second drive after all.

i have been doing it soo long and i never picked the wrong partition! i look at the sizes and free space and drive letter and pick the right partition. i just installed vista again because i was trying to fix my vga driver and it worked perfectly on another partition again.

Try the windows/pc forums, you're honestly going to get a lot more help there. Not that we would refuse to help you; but there are going to be a lot of users here who aren't going to be that intuitive with it, especially being a new OS. The other forums here are more likely to have more experts on the topic.

Good luck!

***EDIT***

On second thought, and this may be a long shot; have you tried editing the main drive's boot.ini? You should be able to create a makeshift boot menu on startup, with a title and boot directory options. Load up xp, and check the boot.ini file. As for finding Vista's main folder, if it isn't easy, I would just google +"vista" +"boot.ini", that should get you some good results. Hope that helps, if not, try the windows/pc forums.
