Errr.. windows has always been a poor imitation of whatever apple did 3 or 4 years before. The mac os has always been a superior high end product, it's just that they were bogged down in a mire of lazy monopoly and endless dreamware projects that they didn't see the opportunities that can come from selling just software. Then as now a mac was a high end machine, aimed at a professional and business user. They were so lucky to survive.. Others, also with superior products to M$ fell by the wayside..
M$ were just lucky that they had an easily hacked, substandard, free if you wanted, run on anything product when the explosion in desktop computing happened after 1995. The office I worked in from 95-99 had 4 macs and one general purpose windows machine. I don't remember ever having to lift a finger to repair anything on the macs, unlike the windows 3.1 heap which was always down for one reason or another.
Don't get me wrong.. I actually liked 3.1 and DOS on the machine.. it just wasn't robust enough when faced with the general low skills user who is still prevalant today.

Please don't just come spouting "haters" at people who have been around computers for a quarter of a century or more.. Some of us can remember a time before M$ when what you wanted to do had a large impact on hardware and software choice. Remember the windows like desktop GUI driven interface on the Amiga machines?

well most people in the world have not owned a computer 10 years ago. windows probly has the simpliest interface so that appeals to people who only use a computer to browse a web or just to email.

Simple interface?? pull the other one. How big is XP home?

I can get a fully working desktop, burning application, graphics editor and text editor. A basic media player and a fully functional easy to configure web browser on a 64MB pendrive.

That is running totally in ram, on a machine that doesn't have the performance to run 2000 at any kind of speed.

A FYI.. most of the more computer savvy members here remember the very first offerings from micro-soft (sorry J.. you weren't born) They were buggy then, and I fail to see much improvement.

yeah janrock i know what u are saying, but people who are great with computers are a minority in the world. i bought a windows computer and i don't like it compared to my old macintosh. but what i am saying is windows did a great yet contraversial strategy by eliminating all compitition now everyone knows what windows is and they it is "rumored" to have the easiest interface. most people don't know how to do anything but search the web so obviously they are going to buy a windows cause they can be the most affordable. however i believe that windows is bad cause of all of the hackers, viruses, and windows lacks in artistic functionality. but most people do not know what a virus is.

What is a virus.. Just a little bit of code designed to exploit a hole in some software. Not a big deal really unless... and heres the real kicker, and the point I was trying to make earlier.. Every computer on the planet has the same hole...

There aren't many mac virus writers, because the mac isn't seen as a good target. There aren't that many of them, and they tend to be set up secure.

The majority of the internet is built with linux servers.. why haven't the virus writers targeted them? They have, but as every *nix system is as individual as it's owner they don't have much success.
There isn't really much point writing something to exploit a flaw in some software which lives at .. /here/there/app when that could be anywhere else and still work.. I mount all my critical exploit risk applications at least one directory off root, and often stick them in a chroot jail too.

As for the "average" windows user being not computer literate.. It's false. They are usually very competent at setting up things if they are guided through it, and know how to configure all the junk that a basically flawed and insecure system needs. The fault isn't with the users.. It's with the makers.

well i understand what you are saying. but u can't expect a computer illiterate person to operate a linux. i guess what i am trying to say is that currently windows is an affordable and easy way to be able to do simple tasks, which is good cause most people just use office and word. also the majority of people are being trained on windows so when u use windows at work, library, school, and at your friends house that is probly what they will buy. mac is an amazing computer but they are fairly expensive and i dunno why but alot of people think macs are tough to use even though it is practically the same as windows. as far as viruses u are totally right, but i can gaurentee u that when mac and linux are on top there will be as many viruses for them as there are for windows right now

In due time many flavors of Linux will have enough polish to directly appeal to the masses of average computer users. When the mass market realizes they can install a free OS that comes with a fully featured office suite, fully featured burning app, and lots of other essentials you don't get with Windows Microsoft is going to have to rethink their business practices. Their near-monopoly on the OS market will be gone and they'll have to truly start competing.

Ahh and the conversation rolls on. I was not going to come back and see the flames I had sparked but I was released from slave labor that is my job and could not resist. Nephilim you claim no one insulted me until I said something about Fiend. Then you point out the zero tolerance policy whilst you insinuate I am a dumbass. Then The_Fiend directly insults me calling me a moron, where is his ban? Ah the truth of the political matter and bias behavior. Fiend, do not flatter yourself, I do not know you or would I waste ANY time speaking your name outside of direct conflict, and whomever you compared me to in your last post had zero class and spouted nothing but obscenities and nonsensical jargon. After reading HIS post you would be silly to attempt a comparison. But, whatever, I am going back to xbox360 forums where sane people dwell and people are allowed to speak without being bombarded by the hate that is you. BTW, you need a Eula or agreement requirement at sign up to make a pact or agreement specifying I agree to a zero tolerance policy. Since I did not agree to anything of the sort it is null to say I am without Civil rights. This is a public domain and is not restricted at entrance. Bubye.

I just love being pedantic..

Also I'm sure when I joined all that time ago there was a box which needed to be clicked that informed the boards that you agreed to abide by all rules, and any other instructions of the staff.

Putting that rude interruption aside we can either continue, or take the point as won.
The days of the microsoft near monopoly of the home desktop pc are numbered.. The only way is down.

(My 2 cents)

I use Microsoft XP Professional Edition (I can't remeber, but whatever), It is a great OS for beginners and what not, like myself. I'm not really a technically saavy person so I like using XP. Microsoft can be a complete douche sometimes though. For example, I have a friend that loves their XP Media Edition, Every time he brings this up, I tell him that I have all of the same features that he does on Professional. Media Edition, in my mind, it is a bloated piece of steaming crap. But I don't really like using Linux and other open-source operating systems because, for me, they are harder to deal with. Maybe it's just me, maybe I'm too lazy to figure out how to work Linux better, but for now, I'm going to stick with Microsoft XP: Professional. I'm not going to upgrade to Vista anytime in the distant future either. I was walking threw Wal-Mart the other day and I noticed a Vista UPGRADE running for $330. Is an upgrade really worth that? Ican't imagine it can be, but maybeb it is. But I wouldn't go out and get excited over a $330 upgrade.

@ DeadRain..

Good question. What is actually "new and essential"

From what most of us can work out, not very much.. Directx 10 support, and a pretty desktop.
There are a host of annoying features too.. Like making huge backup files that on home basic will eventually fill your drive with stuff you have no access to whatsoever.. Every file change and mouse click faithfully stored.. Doesn't that sound like a serious bit of spyware?
All the DRM junk... enough said..
A "once and once only" install license..
Encryption of all data actually on the busses.. Not for external security, but to protect any restricted content (video/audio) from you the user.. while taking up 40% of your cpu cycles in doing it.

I can't see this as an upgrade.. More a downgrade and an exclusion order rolled into one.

I have been asked publicly and privately why I have such a vocal opinion about Vista.. My answer is simple....
It's my computer!.. What I use it for is a matter for my own conscience and morals. My choice..
I have the right to make that choice, and it's not up to Microsoft (or anybody else for that matter) to make that decision for me.
Obviously if you are using somebody elses hardware (parents, schools, college, work) that doesn't apply.

edit.... I can't add any more to this thread, but I'm going to stalk the 360 forums with my extensive theoretical knowledge of the 360 and wait for this guy spouting BS. I'm sure I can drive him up the wall with my alterego.

Hmmm, i was indeed wrong, this guy's constant use of a thesaurus and a dictionary is a few steps above wild77...
Not so many steps, but a few.

@ blasterIsABigJoKe : I have one simple thing to say to your comment about civil rights : THIS IS A FINNISH SERVER RUNNING A BI-LINGUAL WEBSITE.
So you can forget about those constitutional rights alltogether.
Oh wait, they didn't tell you that in your "Looking cool and intellectual for dummies" book ?
I'm sorry, but that's life.
Anyone with any actual real intellect would have realised that by now.
Not to mention anyone using religion in any way to end a non-religious debate IS a moron, because it's pretty hard to prove something that's based on belief, so in my opinion, i rightfully called it as a saw it.
*as for why i didn't get banned, that's easy. Most of the knowledgeable people here like me.*

And the original point i made about you being a pathetic wretch craving the attention his parents obviously didn't supply when younger, you're proving it with every post you made after being banned, because if you really disagree with this site, and really aren't looking for more attention, then why keep coming back to argue?
It's either that, or you're feeding a masochistic need to be put down and insulted, which wmakes you even more pathetic, as there are more than enough places that cater to the masochists' need, without including folks who want no part of such depravities.

Hatred is my trademark btw, good thing you noticed that, just too bad it's general knowledge, making your recognition of it rather meaningless.
As for escaping it by going into the xbox360 forums, be my guest, rather you than me i'd say, with all the moronic, agressive little "spoonfeed me" type children running around, i'm sure that will pleasure you either way...

Wanna tell me off, go ahead.
I dare ya !
