Sony's ARccOS group takes down RipIt4Me and FixVTS

article published on 12 June, 2007

While details of this are sketchy at best and there are multiple court orders to not release details to the public, it appears that the developers for the ARccOS encryption destroying software RipIt4ME and FixVTS have been heavily pursued by an Australian court. In a copyright lawsuit issued Digital Digest, two separate court orders have been issued to seek out personal data as well anything ... [ read the full article ]

@Steener19: I think it's location, location, location. I'm sure Sony's legal team is working on something against all the software that's currently out at the moment, but most of them are wise enough to take advantage of jurisdictional loopholes. I wish RipIt4Me had been, but I suspect they will be back in business soon.

I hope so: it is a very elegant program which in my opinion they should have been able to market no sweat. It is a major loss, not only because of the program itself, but also what it represents - the right to buy a disc and remove all the advertising crap and trailers the manufacturers force onto you.

personally i don't care if the copying software survives or not. most of the movies suck and they are one timers not worth the cost of the media or the time to burn the crap. sony should invest this money in quality actors or major T&A.

Just because Sony has pulled this down does not mean that it can not be found.

Folks who made RipIt4Me and FixVTS need to play demographics. Not all spots on God's world bow to the Copyrights Gods! Then, who wants the info and the programs only need to link to the stuff.

When you open the program, click on logs/settings click on preferences, uncheck the "check for updates" box.

Yup! You may never know who is going to download an update to your computer! Or whatever update (or downdate) it may be. Just don't update your ripit4me from now on!

Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society: Std. Ed

The manufacturers of this dvd disc must have stumbled upon another form of copyguard. A lot of encoders are unable to decode it. I found some way but I will tell you over the email.

I back up my movies so I do not have to pay to watch it again, or to secure the copy in case the family of mine breaks it. I buy the original if it is worth the money.

Copying movies for resale is a crime, because it steals the reward that is supposed to go to the people who produced the movies. If I do not have the means nor the intention to resell the backup copy, why should anybody prevent me from doing whatever I want from what I own.

If I rented a dvd movie, I should own the movie for the duration of the rental, no? And I shelled out money, a portion of which goes to the producers of the dvd. Where is the stealing in that?

I will send you the method of backing up the aforementiond dvd movie even if you are with the copyright protection group. You deserve to know, too, right?

If sony will continue with the court action;
rename product
even put a small token/donation fee on the programs and place it on a sister site.
I mean what have they go against anyone making backups.
I've seen about 2 news story over the last 2 years here in Aus where someone's been caught out copying and reselling DVD's with new labels.

One does not sell backups.
One sells copies.
This is stealing.

I just got myself a perfectly legal program that allows one to back up one's DVD and remove all the crap trailers and advertising that jerks like Sony (spit-on-the-ground)forces one to buy with their DVDs: AnyDVD 6160. Best of all it also it also does Bluerays!!!

Is there some crying & whining happening at Sony (spit) headquarters?

I mentioned before it's rather interesting that those programs are available retail & that's okay... but God forbid that someone give away an elegant program like RipIt4Me. What's wrong with this picture?

Anyway, the movie industry sure stopped us from being able to back up stuff, huh?

it's all ok. sony has such a hard on for pirates that now thier products are starting to suffer. thier tvs and product reliability are slowly declining as this year the samsung lct line (samsung of all people) is actually a better tv and thier s300 b) player is a waste of time sure to be abandoned by sony when the s500 comes out. the 1080p panasonic plasma will eat a sony lcd for lunch and thier famed es series line is of no intetest to much of any one any more. sony has been so obsessed with thinking the average consumer is a pirate that thier dvd recorders are ridiled with anti copy schems that have the local cable companies scratching thier heads as such the recorders end up back in the store as an open box unit. both panny and sammy make b) players that eat the sony line for lunch. so while sony loses focus on what they have built in trade for a obsession one has to wonder whos driving the train at sony. this is the first year that i have rejected a sony lcd tv, a sony s300 b) player, and a sony dvd recorder all for other brands that were far supperior and have customer satisfaction as priority one. good luck sony there's always a lot of room at the bottom of the barrel however it is so so tough to claw your way back up the food chain. in my opinion this obsession could cost sony its companies reputation and cripple sales of hardware based products. actualy for the first time i have been hearing comments from people regarding products when some one mentions sony i will hear "but you should look at xxx brand before you buy as sony is not what they were 5 years ago". product reliability is down, performance is down, cost is way up(i wonder why), overal performance and ciustomer satisfaction is down.
