I am not aware of any upgrade issues ( to OE that is) with the TA-082. One of my PSP's (Pink) is a Ta-082 and I successfully upgraded to Dax 3.40 OE-A.
Only difference I found was sometimes the screen is blank. Just hit briteness button and carry on as normal.
I used the following app to Upgrade to 3.40 OE-A. Dead easy to use.

"Using 3.40 OE" is really no different to Sony FW, except the extra Recovery Menu which you shouldn't use too often.
As far as what you can do with it:
Play your owned backed up UMD's from memory stick. A LOT faster and will extend the life of the UMD Drive.
Play a whole bunch of ALL types of homebrew from Apps to Games.
Customise your XMB, but this is risky if you are new to it.
I suggest upgrading to OE since newer UMD releases will need a firmware higher than 1.50.

Hey gizmore,
I followed the instructions on your blog (was sent by mininova) and it went flawlessly. Thanks a bunch.

Hello, I am at the middle to downgrade 3.03 to 1.5. Now, it comes up saying the settings are corrupt, press O to continue. But, I tried many times to do the network upgrade, network setting, and load the NetConfigBackup, none of them does work. Who can help me?
