yes it probably was more a problem than its worth. An PS2 hdd is much better.
For a PS2 12-13 this is a good solution

For under V12 look here, it has all the info.

An older PS2 is great for a ide hd.

As for the Xbox you will have to look at that section of the forum, I have no idea about them, sorry.

The only reason i thought about the hd option for my PS2 is because the laser went bad 2 times so far. One time after 2 weeks. The second time after 1.5 years. So, I thought maybe I should make less load on the laser by playing from HD.

I used Sony and Virbatum DVD's, I was burning at low speeds. So I think it is just the life of the laser.

How is your PS2 laser doing?

Thanks

Regarding the hdcombo website. Do those people sell this product? or I have to send my PS2 to be fixed?

If they sell it, where can I get ino about installing the case and the HD? is it easy?

Does this method still have the incompatability issues?

Thanks

My laser seems fine in my V14 and I have a V7 and V5 still running.
I have 2 V7 and had to replace the laser in one of them, and the other one I adjusted the white cog, and still working fine.

The V14 we play almost daily and its over a year old now.

I personally think installing a hard drive on the older Fat models is way easier.

Here is for the hdcombo.

Where to buy depends upon where you live, check online at mod sites.
No there aren't too many compatibility issues at all with this type of hard drive. Most games have patches if there is though that fix the issue.
Lasers do go though for sure, but the newer ones on the slim models are cheaper than say for my V7.
You can find them for like $26.
