It's possible, but the issue started right after installing PowerISO...
I am not aware of any malaware that would make my DVD/RW drive stop recognizing DVD/RW's. It works with CD's still. And I was able to burn a DVD/RW with Nero, but the Nero verification process failed after burning. I am certain that the disc was burned properly too. The verification process just failed because it could not read the disc which is odd.
I will run a full virus scan when I get home. Let me know if you have any other ideas because I am stumped on this one.
I do have another idea. Check the lowerfilters registry entry.
Background:
Access to the optical drives exhibit this problem when an entry
for a driver in lowerfilters is present, but the driver is not on
the system.
Create a restore point (important)
Use REGEDIT and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Hilight this key in the left pane.
On the right pane, double click on lowerfilters. When the box opens
up, write down the names that are in there, then
delete the entire list. Close regedit. Reboot the system
and check access to the drive.
(Use system restore and your new restore point to
restore the registry when you've finished your testing)
Ok so I looked for the lowerfilters entry in the 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 key and it was not there. Upperfilter key was not there either... I am not sure if it should have been or not.
I also tried a system restore to about a month ago when everything was working but still no luck.
I was able to use Nero to burn a DVD last night but the funny thing is that after successfully burning it can't read the data off of it but I can play the DVD in my DVD player fine.
For now I am throwing in the towel and I am going to live with this. I hardly ever need to read data from a DVD/RW disc anyway. That seems to be the only area where the problem is...
If I have some time I'll mess with it some more and post back once(or if) I figure it out so others will not struggle with this.
Thanks a lot for your help. I really appreciate it!
well dude i've read your problem and coincidentaly i have the same one. when i first bought my toshiba laptop i immediately downloaded powerIso onto it and the minute it reboted the drive stoped working. I was at that time trying to copy my music onto my computer but it didn't detect a cd in the drive. so at this point i was pretty much freaking out. i tryed restoring it to old times, doesn't work. The only thing that works and will 100% solve the problem, is to recover your computer to manufactury state. I did that and even though it sucks to do it, i am thankful for it. so i hope this solves your problem. I so your problem through a google search and decided once my problem was solved, i had to join this forum to tell you how to fix it. hope it works out!
