Way to go man! I don't have a wasabi so I was unaware of any probs with this method, I will add a side note to my original tutorial tho, so thanks for the info.

I couldnt post the link on here bc no outside links permitted,
I can repost the entire thing on afterdawn tho, if anybody else wants me to.

Its actually really weird. I was doing so much research on this subject, and I happened to stumble across one person's post that mentioned that the chip skips a few Kbs of data. That was it - it was in the middle of a huge thread, no one replied to it, no one mentioned it, no one paid attention to it. I kept it in mind, and after trying everything else I decided to try that one last possiblity before ordering an LG drive. I mean - the worst that could happen would be that it didn't work and I now had a switch on my modchip for any future use if needed.

--- EDIT --

If you add a sidenote into your tutorial - don't give me all the credit for it. Like I said - I read it one one small post lost in the large world of WWW. I honestly for the life of me don't know who the poster was, and I probabbly could never find the post again. Had I never saw the post I most likely wouldn't be bringing anyone this information. But the important thing is that we have the solution.

I would love to see the repost or if you could tell me which forum you had the posting on and your unsername there, then I could search for it. Or you could PM me the link, but doing one of the the former would help out more people as well.

Well before we can help you out, we really need to know what kind of chip you have, and what the disc is he gave you. I'm thinking you have a WiiKey with the config disc - althought there is no way I can be sure. I believe the original config discs were made that you needed a Gamecube control, but later on they added in the ability to chose options by using the reset and (eject?) buttons on the front of the wii. But ultimately, we need to know what chip you have and hardware. A GC control makes thinges easier, and you MUST have an SD Gecko (basically an adapter so the SD card can plug into gamecube memory card slot).

I'm not familiar with the program on the config disc. I dont have a wiikey anymore. I switched it for a wasabi - and I can't use the config disc utility with the Wasabi. With the program I use, I don't have to use any commands at all. It simply takes the game into parts and then I use HJ Split on the computer to recombine it.

I can help you if you literally explain to me step by step what you did - because I do vaguely remember how to use the config disc utility.

Open the program again? I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to close the program.

When you use the program to copy the game to your SD card, you then take the SD card and bring it to your computer copy the contents (reformat if you desire - I recommend). Then go back to your wii that has been left sitting idle since it finished the 1st dump. Another thing to know if that you can only use 1 SD card to do the whole dump, you cant use 2 to make things go faster.

I would recommend doing it. I'm not saying thats the problem. I'm not sure if the config disc utility reformats the SD card. However, I did notice a better success rate when using the SD-DVD01g program. I recommend getting a small program specifically designed to reformat SD cards. Just google it..you will find one in a few seconds.

Well I'm not 100% sure but with my Wasabi thats the problem I was having which led me to do a lot of research and testing. I found that with the Wasabi, adding an external switch to turn off the chip fixed all my problems. Basically I would have the chip active - stick in the Disc with the utility to copy the game - then once the program was launched I turned the chip off. This fixed all of my problems with the Wasabi - I can't say 100% that it will fix your Wiikey trouble though. If you can't easily install a switch to test it out - then I suggest going to http://www.wiinewz.com/. The have very active forums with people who might be able to help you a little better.

Hi People.

I'm having some trouble too with the last chunk during a backup too, gets to 99% and then reports a read err (cleaned disk/tried different one etc all the same).

I have Wasabi V3 on a D2E with 3.3 firmware, with no TP hack yet. Using the dump tool from the SD_Gecko_Tutorial_Team_Symbiote package (a good tutorial) [includes wiiKey DVDDump v0.8] and a SD to GC memory slot adaptor. Don't have GC controller but may get one (dealextreme are handy).

I'm very new to this, trucha signing/scrubbing/brick blocking etc, but I am hopefully getting to grips with it. It becomes rather confusing because of the different modes the wii can run in.

1.
I've installed a switch between GND and point K (I probably saw the same post), but that doesn't seem to help (I've checked it does disable the chip).
Can you confirm this is what you did?

2.
Failing this, any idea where I am going wrong, all the other chunks seem fine. I haven't tried to reformat the SD card before the last chunk, so will try that tonight.
Any other methods I could try (please say if they need TP (due to FWv3.3) or GC controller)?
Planning on trying Sddvd01g also, but sounds like that has the same issue. Will also try DVDtoSD v.0.1.1 beta (found on tehskeen)
I just wonder if this err is a D2E feature.

3.
Are they any handy utils like WUM (WiiUpdateManager 1.2) which you can use to check iso's before you make coasters. Something which checks the size, if it is trucha signed (i.e. needs TP on V3.3 firmware), GC or Wii and can make a good guess to if it will run? I'm sure it isn't difficult if you know what to look for. Has anyone got DVD+RW's working?

4.
If I could find a LG drive in the UK, is it difficult to get that working (I've read issues with the drives firmware can cause problems perhaps). Of course don't want to spend a lot on DVDRom drive, but it would be independent from all wii update issues etc.

5.
A final idea is, if the last part of the disk is null data (i.e. wiiscrubber would remove it) would the disk work if you recombine the dump anyway and then pack to the standard size (Wii iso size: 4.37 GB (4,699,979,776 bytes)Gamecube iso size: 1.35 GB (1,459,978,240 bytes)).

Would be helpful I think to see what combo of hardware/software gets the same error too.

Thanks in advance, still have a few things to try but any help/advice would be great.

Hmmm.... I don't have enough time right now to go through your whole post but I do suggest trying SdDVD01g because thats what I used with my wasabi and I have had no trouble.

Ok tried a format before doing the last chunk (and using the switch) and it appeared to work (didn't get the read error, although only had time to try this once). However the resultant iso didn't work, so will start again with format between each. I will also check the MD5 hash (I've found the hash for the disc I am testing).

I tried to use the WiiKey 1.5 util disc creator to add the Sddvd01g dol file but unfortunately that disc isn't work either. Are there any ready made iso's with it on?

Haven't much luck with creating working disks from scratch, wondering if I'm doing something badly wrong here. Got two discs to try out made with BootableDisc3 tool, so will see what happens.

FYI it's much easier to backup from your Wii to PC. I tried it last night and it worked like a charm. Only issue is the package for the HTTP server is incorrect. You place it in your apps folder but eliminate the extra level. Otherwise the HTTP server will not show up in your homebrew channel:

http://www.lupiloop.com/index.php?cat=2&full=1&id=6

Only issue I had was firewall and IE related. They are right it's better to use firefox and your firewall will probably give you problems. So either disable it temporarily or creat an exception for it. If you don't know what I'm talking about and don't understand the backup package instructions don't ask. If you do understand and are having small issues I'll be happy to help. Enjoy.

y2j514 <- Thanks for looking it over. Only the DVDtoSD0.1.1Beta-Tehskeen disc worked (also had a SDDVD 01G version but that failed). Either way, I think they both need GC controllers to use.

oblachubs <- That method sounds very good (although with firmware 3.3 and no TP hack, I don't have the homebrew channel installed so not an option yet).

The good news is I've checked the MD5 hash of my file and that matches the one I found so it looks like I have a good image anyway (perhaps I didn't turn off the chip before putting in the disc the first few times and just switched it off before the read perhaps).

I think I have a bad batch of discs too which is probably part of my problems, a fair number have dye runs etc. so opened a new pack and trying them/maybe use another burner too. I checked the two failed burns I did and DVDInfo had 35% & 85% quality ratings on PIPO checks. I'll check a working one and see what rating that is.

UPDATE: Re-burned using new pack of discs and the same image which failed twice now works.

Hi All,
I thought I would sum up what I've found (so hopefully help anyone else).

This is the set up which I've found works for DVD Backup from the Wii.
- Wasabi V3 on a PAL D2E with 3.3 firmware, with no TP hack.
- Also I would recommend using a wiiclip to install the chip, involves a lot less risk to your wii, plus find a disassemble guide to help with opening before you start.
- Use the SD_Gecko_Tutorial_Team_Symbiote package to get all the software you need (includes DVDDump which doesn't need a GC controller to operate).
- Ensure you can disable your chip (this must be done between loading up DVDDump disc and inserting the source disc). For Wasabi this is done by installing a switch between GND and point K (does also mean you can keep your chip disabled when you not using it, which sounds like a good idea to me!).
- Use something like the SD to GC adaptor from deal extreme and a SD card 2Gb or less (HCSD not supported).
- Test your set up by performing a dump and checking the MD5 checksum matches one listed from online (suggest you look for common discs, make sure it is the same region). If it doesn't match it might be ok still, but if it does match you know you are ok (will be a byte for byte match). Also check the size (Wii iso size: 4.37 GB (4,699,979,776 bytes) Gamecube iso size: 1.35 GB (1,459,978,240 bytes)).

Homebrew Channel:
- Try to install Homebrew Channel before upgrading to firmware 3.3, it does make it much easier, pop in DVD and away you go (otherwise you will need to do the TP hack to load it which is a pain, but the WiiBrewSD loader is helpful for this).
- Since 3.3 firmware, wii discs which are Trucha signed (ie. resigned because they contain modified code (ie. ripper/dvd player etc)) will not run without using the Homebrew Channel. This is why programs like DVDDump run in GC mode and have to use the GC card slot etc.
- The home brew channel allows you an easy way to run .dol/.elf files from directories on an SD card without using TP hack each time or using a new DVD image (like the DVDDump disc) - you can make GC discs to load .elf using BootableDisc3 package (I don't think it'll load the homebrew channel though since it needs to use the wii mode not GC mode). The .dol and .elf files can include other homebrew programs/games/utils which include DVD/divx players, emulators, wad managers, also DVD loader for Trucha signed discs for 3.3 (haven't tried this yet though).
- wad files are typically wiiware/virtual console programs/channels (again ensure they are homebrew i.e. opensource/free) [also recommend using emulators instead of wads if you can]
- Also I think you can run backups from the homebrew channel without a mod chip (but haven't tried this so can't confirm).

With downloaded images (I don't recommend them (do you own the original?)):
- .wii files need to be unscrambled via RawDump (the program to read using the LG DVD rom drives) BEFORE you burn to DVD.
- Use WUM (WiiUpdateManager) and WIU to check any ISOs BEFORE you burn. These at least give you an idea if the image is near the right format and also inform you if updates are included and if the region is correct. There is also GC-Tool for GC iso's.
- NEVER install an update from a different region (you can remove updates using the above programs and this doesn't seem to require the Trucha signing to do it so is ok with 3.3). Of course some discs will need the update to run.
- Again check the MD5 if possible.

Finally, have a range of DVDRs makes to try. My CMC MAG M01 x16 DVD+R work for about 1 in 5 burns and may well have issues as I run more of the programs (they do however read perfect in my PC DVD drive so will still make nice backup backups). In fact, it worries me that the wii can not read these discs very well and suggests to me that running from backup discs is the best option (original damaged = unreadable in wii & pc, backup damaged = unreadable in wii but probably OK in PC or at least can re-dump).

I will post when I find some good discs, apparently Verbatim are known to be some of the best (but I can't verify this yet). At present no luck with DVDRWs and not sure if +R or -R is better than the other.

Thanks for all the help and information from others (sorry I can't say where/who I've read it from because it is from all over). If anyone sees something which isn't right, please correct it, I'm hoping to help noobs like me.

If anyone has any questions, I'll also try to answer or try them out.

Cheers.

To be completly honest - I've been out of the scene for quite some time now. The wii is turning out to be a major let down. I havent turned mine on in months. I've since bought a 360 and have pretty much forgot about my wii. As a result, what you just said is nothing short of chinese to me. I wish I could help more, but all I can offer is a site which may be better able to help you.
