Newbie, 1st post!

I am having a bit of trouble ripping this... I have tried DVD Decrypter and DVDFab (the only 2 I am extensively familiar with). The DVD appears under the name D:/ASDF instead of D:/American_Ganster like I expect it to... is there an issue with the specific DVD I have?

DVDFab says there is an error and DVD Decrypter states "there is a CSS encryption which is somewhat strange" and when I click Yes to All, it rips and freezes at around 4%

ASDF is correct.
You must have a bad disc. Before you bring it back for an exchange, try cleaning it.

just from looking at the disc it has no scratches and appears to be clear (brand new unopened disc)... could the fact that it was in my car all day (in 10 degree weather) impact it being 'clean'?

thanks!

Being out in the cold and then brought into a warm room could produce moisture but that's probably not the problem. Does it play well on your standalone player?

Well it can be one of two problems. Either the disc had a bad spot on it or your burner is at fault. Try cleaning both the disc and the laser lens of your burner.

When's the last time you rebooted? Sometimes (rarely) I have to do this to get a program or burner to play nice. But it does sound like a bad press.

I have rebooted a few times and finally got DVD Fab to recognize the DVD (it wasnt previously) and not show an error at the beginning of the rip. It is running right now, and I'm crossing my fingers. I'll let you know the outcome.

Thanks for all your help guys, I am now officially an addict ;-D

I just purchased American Gangster ( Universal ) and Battlestar Galactica ( Fox ) and backed up both of them full disc minus foreign audio streams and the problem is both will pause a couple of seconds a couple of times during playback on my stand alone. Both movies have a theatrical and extended version. Could this be part of the problem. Both the original movies do this. Any ideas?

If the original disks act the same way, it sounds like your standalone player has a dirty or defective lens/laser. Perhaps try dusting the lens off or using a DVD Lens cleaning kit.

BSG does have a warning that pauses may occur on some players. Was wondering if both versions might be kinda interwoven together.

Would backing them up as a straight movie minus the menus and previews fix this?

My American Gangster plays fine, both original and backup copy, Philips DVD player, GE player, Toshiba player and the dreaded Dodge Mini-Van Disk eater player.

You can make two backups. One extended version and one orginal version.

@z28guy

Since both movies do it, originals and copies, I would think it's the dvd player. The pc has done it's job of making a copy like the original. Do the pauses occur at the same place in orig and copy on both movies? I would think there is not much you could do except get a better player or put up with the pauses. If the lense was dirty, then the pauses would be in different locations on the discs each time. JM2C

I burned a copy of American Gangster using DVD Shrink and there is no audio for the theatrical version of the movie. The extended version works just fine. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and can help me solve it.

I did not make any modifications. I burned the same way I always do. Are there some settings that I should be checking?
