Hey Frank, glad your Pioneer came ok. Did you get the hacked firmware installed on it yet? Let me know what Pioneer Tech say about the Memorex.

Hi Oriphus,

I have the hacked firmware and am having good success with 8X burns.

I burned 10 or so movies at 8X using the Pioneer and Memorex 4X -R media until this evening.
Using Shrink 3.1.6 and Nero 6: The first movie burned at 8X, no problems.
The second movie failed with an internal target error using the same process. Attempted a 4X burn with +R Memorex, Another coaster.

I had been moving files around in Explorer earlier today including Nero, So I uninstalled Nero and reinstalled it.

Next,I used Shrink to rip the next movies to my hard drive and then used Nero Burning ROM to simulate each burn first and then complete the burn.

The simulated burns were successful in each case and the burns were fine as well.

I don't trust Memorex media enough anymore to just burn without doing the simulation first which kinda takes the fun out of an 8X burn.

I do believe that the problem was with Nero although I don't know why it would burn one movie and then fail on the next attempt. This problem was similar to the initial problem I had with the Memorex, which I also resolved by reinstalling Nero.

I have been having other problems with Nero lately, so it's difficult for me to blame the media at this point, although as soon as the Memorex is used, I'll be switching to Ritek.

Pioneer tech never did get back to me with an answer about the Memorex media.

Cheers,
Frank

Hi,
I think you might look at the storage capacity on the IBM site : http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=-840&langId=-1&partNumber=22P7015&storeId=1

This shows the drive has a 17 GIG capacity, therefore it MUST write DVD-18. I called them before buying it last year, as the text seems to be a DVD-10 but the 17 GIG total is definatelly DVD-18. They confirmed that it is indeed a DS/DD writer, ie DVD9 with DVD18 manually

Should you have any data which shows this to be false, I wuld greatly appreciate seeing it.

Thank you.

I'd say this line from your link shows that it only writes single layer disks:
Quote:
The ThinkPad Multi-Burner Ultrabay 2000 Drive reads and writes both high capacity DVD (up to 9.4GB per double-sided DVD-RAM disc)
9.4GB per double-sided disk would be 4.7GB per side, which is a DVD-5 (single layer disk). When it says the drive has a capacity of 17GB that's just marketing-speak for "It can read a DVD-9".

I noticed the ambiguity when I first saw the ad last year. I called the sales dept and they assured me that this will write a 17 gig disc when available. I was one of the first to receive this drive.

I called again recenly to ask where I could get the DVD-18 or DVD-9 discs and they had no idea and had no plans to sell them. But they again assured me that this was a 17 GIG writer.
Should this drive NOT write a dual layer disc. I will have to try for a refund as they promoted it as a dual layer writer.

When a dual sided writer is avaliable, I hope it will be like the Laser disk which would play both sided without user intervention...

Pioneer has said that the story of unmodified 107s being able to burn dual layer burning is not true - but maybe theyre just saying that because they want to sell more new burners (what a shock.) I bet official Pioneer upgrades for 107 dual layer support will not be available, but that's just an educated guess.
Besides which Dual Layer -R media will not be available until the 4th quarter 04 at least and at 1x to boot.

2.4x +R dual layer will be out much sooner, and certain philps chipset burners will be firmware upgradable IF the manufacturer releases such a firmware (most wont, just like Pioneer won't I'd say.)
[edit]
Here's a doom9.org story from 2/5 that I found:
"According to CDR-Info, Philips will release version 1.9 of the DVD+R specification tomorrow. The specs include dual layer DVD+R discs and increased navigational flexibility. It seems like the DVD+R camp is set on a spring 2004 release date, whereas the DVD-R camp seems to go a little slower. German computer mag c't recently reported in their print editing that the dual layer DVD-R burner shown at CES was in fact not an A06 with only a firmware upgrade, but that the hardware was modified as well. And Pioneer said that neither the A06 nor A07 could be upgraded to dual layer burning capabilities and that only the A09, due for Christmas 2004 would add dual layer DVD-R support, at 1x speed. In the meantime, there will be an A08 burner that burns DVD-Rs at 12x or 16x (the specs are not yet known), since the A09 will handle single layer DVD-Rs at 16x speed."

A few points:

1). IDM Drive does not and will not burn Dual Layer, end of story!!

2). It will write DVD-10, which is single layer double sided, but so will all drives.

3). If the sales department told you that it was capable of writing dual layered DVD-9 (if u used that terminology), then i guess thats false advertisement and you should be able to get a refund if it s still newish.

4). Pioneer unmodified writers will not be able to burn dual alyer. Modified with a firmware however, and its a different story. It is unlikely that Pioneer will release a firmware for it, but thats why we have >Nil and Flashman ;-)

5). Also note that current drives will have a top speed of around 2.4x, thats 1 hour for a full DVD-9 disc. I certainly wont be using them. Thats where the higher speed drives will be produced to sell.

Re: the pioneer dvr-106d... I bought one about a month ago and it came with firmware version v1.08 ... no one seems to list this version on their firmware websites, and I'm wondering why???

It's got to be an official version since I got it with the burner. Does no one else have this firmware version?
