yah, i remember when my mum put parental controls on my login....i did the same back to her. i wouldnt put controls on the PC until the child starts lookin for porn, othewise, they will learn about it a lot sooner than they are supposed to.
@dragula - that isn't an actual link to a site, whereas the other one was.
@varnull - thanks, but i prefer not to put restrictions on their accounts as we have discussed their internet usage and they know i might check up on them sometimes, but i generally trust them.
@ Eva.. that's the best way.. trust is always better than restriction. Good to see you can supervise your kids calmly and with mutual respect. I must admit it's people with the 5-11 year olds who have the most concern about what might just pop up on the screen and want some sort of content safety installed. It seems most parents take the view once senior school starts then the kids are going to be exposed to sex education and the age of innocence is over. there are still some sites I wouldn't like children finding.. but there are ways to silently filter those using peerguardian......
@ others..Depends on your kids and how savvy you are as an administrator (which you are in these circumstances) about not allowing them access to any content filtering or connectivity changing software.
example.. you try to lock me out of my computer or bypass my filters and that's game over.. no more program install rights for you.. ever.. your account will be terminated and the incident reported to administrator... gotta love unix.. seek admin assistance to install applications if you do not have permission.. I would like to see some 12 year old kid get past a unix style groups and users permissions policy.
anyway.. I think at 13 children are old enough to understand what sex is.. what it is for and the possible consequences. If you try to protect them from everything they are very unprepared for that big nasty world out there.
Down to the end user who has overall responsibility.. remembering that it is the parents responsibility what a child sees on their internet connection.. and in some countries that could be seen as "showing offensive material to minors.. or be allowing to be seen" and you can go to jail for it in some circumstances.. so bear that in mind.
One day you may be a parent of a teenager.. then you will understand. In my house you would have no outside internet access for 6 months for a stunt like that... because I run the firewall and can set ports by user ;) Don't mess with the BOFH :)
well, i think that there are a lot of dud firewalls, some are hard to get by, and some are just child's play. if course it will depend on what you want, but best thing to do is just leave them alone, and check history when they are not on the PC. But i wouldnt do it when they could notice, and if you have a real brainy one, they will probably delete the history. Whichcase, you just go into the temporary internet files, which are usually deleted seperatly.
