yea damage has been done already, What resistance did you set it to?
Go as low as 3.0 if that doesnt work then laser is gone.

it sitting at 3.22, my last reading. so even if the laser lights up it can still be fried? i read that whats happened to me could be due to a problem sometimes that occurs when flashing to 1.6 without removing the laser ribbon from board or laser before the flash. heard about this?

no never heard of that. I have flash many lite-ons and never had a problem but a few don't like backups will read them sometimes and give dirty disk even after pot calibration with those I just replace with a Benq. Problem solved.

to bad, theres not a way to flash a lite on with its original fw, that way i could test that. this is a mystery to me. but could you answer this question. can a laser still be burnt out although it lights up?

I have seen drives that were working and without changing anything after awhile they no longer read anything and those laser would still light up

I know this is a few months old but for anyone else with the lite on 74850c its recomended to remove the laser ribbon while flashing, I dont know why this happens but there is a chance it can destroy the laser and give you the 'open tray error'. This being said, you can use the Benq laser Hop 1401 if you happen to have the open tray error after flashing a lite on 74850c or simply unplug the ribbon at the time of flashing :-)
