Sony can release a new console in 2 years as long as they stay true to form with how they handled the PS2 - producing games for 2 years alongside the PS3. I wouldn't jump on that bandwagon though. But I'd be happy holding on to the PS3. It's just a large investment to turn around in such a short time. I didn't spend as much on it though. $400 for the 40GB model. $42 for a second controller recently. Through coupons and promotion codes, I upgraded to a 320GB HDD for $50. I scored a USB-PS2 adapter for free and am able to use my Logitech wireless PS2 controller for a third controller. If friends come over, I always ask one of them to bring 1 PS3 controller. Works out fine. I feel like I spent the least amount I was willing to, for a solid machine that covers my gaming needs and my interest in bluray. Depending on how tech changes, I would drop another $500-$600 in a few more years.

Why they have no reason to release a new console one of the reasons the PS3 is so expensive is the technology behind it. it also happens to be its drawback.

I was just addressing a comment that was made that Sony will probably release a new console in 2 years anyway - which I don't happen to agree with. But, if they did, for whatever reason, then my above comment would hold. Like you, I personally don't see a reason why they would and don't expect it.
Done are the days that I buy a system the same year it's released anyway. I waited a year after the PS3 release. Any "next-gen" from this point on will probably be a longer wait. I do miss the days when it was just Mario vs Sonic.

I bet if Microsoft were to release a new console in 2 years, Sony will just come out with a redesigned PS3 with a cheaper price tag. I'm sure that would have lot's of sales just because it's "new". Every other console redesign for whatever always seem to do well...

I just work on M$ and the way they go about things... 5 years life on a console.. then a new product.
People have very short memories.. a little research into the history of gaming consoles will show up some startling facts and links between the "big 3"

I don't see a need for a new Sony console either as the price of the current PS3 250-350 is abotu the price of a new system. The PS3 has enough horse power to last 8 years or more. SO the main problem is Sony buckling down and doing what is needed to get the console in position to make money and that's reduce the price and a take a profit hit on the front end that's the only thing they can do with the business model they chose.
