No, it isn't like a bannerbrick it's kind of like overwriting something genuine with something fake. Just because you remove the fake doesn't bring back the genuine (Like overwriting a report that you slaved over with a blank document... all your work isn't coming back). Starfall and Preloader patch the system menu. Once the system menu is gone, it's pretty much game over. The only options are send it to Nintendo or have a backup of your nand and a method to write it back (bootmii or infectus)
You can use Bootmii. Http://www.Bootmii.org The thing is not all Wiis can install it as boot2. The great thing about installing it as boot2 is that it is independent of the system menu. The system menu can be dead and bootmii would still load if it was installed as boot2.
Ok first of all I want to thank everyone for this thread! Nice info!
Please can someone just confirm my related question on this. I have a WiiKey 1 and 1.9s, firmware is 3.2U. I have never cared about homebrew or installed anything on my wii (other than soldered wii key) I stayed away from SSBB for a year because of updates. I bought a WiiFit Board and read forum threads all night before I would update using WUM 1.2
now finally even after using WUM 1.2 on new Bloom Blox and Punch Out I get black screen after I select the game. Is there anyway to get around this without installing a homebrew channel. I would love to stay away from wads and iso stuff It never crossed my mind to update to 4.0, but is that another solution?

+1 ... I'm in the same boat... except I did not update using WUM 1.2...
can we not just brickblock it and play the game? What will happen if i update to 4.0?
I'm also trying this but I'm having some problems. I got further than ever, meaning I finally installed the 'boot.dol'
I'm a total noobie at this so correct me if I'm wrong.
-I'm trying to install 'cIOS 60.wad', 'ciosv9.wad' and 'IOS35-64-v1040.wad'.
-I just don't know where to put these files on my SD card, so my Wii can recognise it.
