ok, Most dvd-roms will read dvd+r or dvd-r, they just will not burn them. Now getting back to the computer with the sony and samsung. You typed the samsung as being a cdrw. a cdrw is a cd burner. 2 burners on the same ide cable can cause burning problems.

I'm getting a little confused which drive your asking. The sony is a burner, which will read everything. Is your samsung a combo drive or just a straight cd burner. If its a combo drive it will read everything. If its a cd burner it will only read cds.

alright, the sony and the samsung are built into the same computer which is the desktop. the sony drive is the main drive with dvdrw and cdrw the samsung is the second drive which is the built in burner drive. the main drive will not recognize the dvd+r

If a writeable dvd is burned PROPERLY it can be read

1) You need a dvd burning program. Nero, Roxio etc...
I recommend Nero.
2) If it is burned right any dvd-rom or dvd burner will read it.

Now your two drives on your desktop computer. Leave the dvd burner how it is. Disconnect your samsung(cdrw), connect it to a different ide cable and make it a slave on that cable. 2 burners on the same cable can cause burning problems.

It would really, really help if you identified the drives by make/model instead of referring to "main" or "lesser".

In order to help you we need to have absolute clarity about which drive/problem we are talking about.

Nephilim this is southpaws setup:
desktop:
sony DW-U12A (main drive)
samsung cd/rw sc-140c (slave)

notebook:
matshita ujda745

I believe on desktop they are on the same ide cable. Southpaws spoke of the wizard not working. In XP the wizard only burns cd's and not dvd's. Just needs to get a dvd burning program.

alright, i got it to work on the desktop. I don't think this is possible on the notebook so I will just have to get a new drive. Thanks for your help.

Right on Southpaws. If you don't mind me asking, what did you do to get it to work?

Thank you flip! Since I have some clarity now.....

BurnAtOnce is a freeware burning app that has a good record. It comes set up to burn CD only but it can be upgraded for free to burn DVD. Here are some links:

http://www.burnatonce.com/

Instructions for enabling DVD capability:

http://www.burnatonce.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=696

Please note that ASPI ver. 4.60 needs to be installed for it to work properly. ForceASPI 1.7 will install it.

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/frcaspi.cfm

I'd also recommend disabling Windows IMAPI burning service before installing and using BurnAtOnce. IMAPI can cause conflicts with other burning apps.

Or you can download the trial version of Nero 6 - it is well worth the $$.
