Yes...it can be a lot of fun, and very satisfying when you get things to work. This forum has saved my bacon more than once.
You have the basics of a nice computer system that should do the job. I have a few more suggestions for you which should insure your success.
1. You need to have a good hard drive...with DMA enabled via Device Manager. I recommend the Maxtor Ultra ATA133 120 GB 7200 RPM with 8 MB cache which goes on eBay for around $90. I would partition it into a C and D drive, with the S/W on C, and files on D. Maxtor also has a very nice warranty/replacement program not offered by others. Whatever drive you choose, I would suggest one with 7200 RPM.
2. I use a system of removable hard drive trays to change hard drives that have various files and softwares. I do this mainly to avoid S/W conflicts. Do an eBay search for "mobile hot swap". Total cost is about $15 each incl frt. The tray approach allows me to dedicate a single hard drive to DVD activity, and to only have the essential software loaded. Without unnecessary software, your system can perform to its maximum...and you won't have S/W conflicts.
3. Most people have Roxio, and that is why I mentioned it. It is a good user-friendly burner for CD's and backing up files to DVD, but has failed me in backing up my DVD's.(I do keep Roxio on another hard drive, but it can't co-exist with other burners like Nero or Record Now.). I did try the Record Now that came with the 530A, but it was clear it didn't have the versatility I was already getting with Nero 6. I have tried all the main burners at this point, and I believe that Nero's latest V6 offers a very good deal. Users had trouble with some Nero V5 versions so I would avoid these if possible. Also, the DVD Shrink I mentioned before has the option of launching Nero in the background to burn the DVD files...which means you only need to work with one piece of S/W. When it works like it is supposed to, it is a nifty setup.
4. If you do set up a new hard drive, I would advise installing Symantec/Norton SystemWorks anti-virus S/W before you download the XP updates. Symantec also has some very nice features...like a registry checker/repair, and a hard drive clone function. This S/W has taken the guesswork out of solving a number of problems and keeps my drives in optimun working order. (I still have McAfee on another HD, and will eventually change it over to Norton).
5. Again...make sure you have downloaded the ASPI fix!!! You won't get far without it. I would also suggest you search the forum for comments on the ASPI so that if you do have a problem, you will have an idea of what you are looking at when it happens.

I have seen a lot of discussions about the PS2...but I don't have one. The thing is, you have a good burner and good quality DVD's, so I would look at other things. Thus, I would suggest you do a "PS2" search for similar problems.

Doc,
thanks a whole lot.
I know there are things I need to do. having another hd just for this is not a bad idea at all. Only thing now is to get the money together for that lol
umm i want to read up on the other stuff you told me.
also the firmware you spoke of earlier. should i do that last after i have take off roxio?
I decided to dl Nero6, well I did already.
I just have another question. on Roxio I created my own labels and covers for my cd's. I like that interface but i could use another one. does Nero come with that, if not i would appreciate a name of a good one (hopefully free). I know fellow use to have a free one.
I use to burn my friends album for her, i design the cover myself. I still want to be able to do that.
OK I am sure I have more qestions. I will work on this first.
ty for the help Do, I appreciate it.

Hi Gretta...
I know what you mean about Roxio...and it is very user friendly. That is why I still have it on another HDD. However, experience says it has to go. And yes, Nero 6 does have a nice cover designer program. It looks something like a paint application, and you can import scanned images or pre-existing clip art...most likely in jpeg or bitmap form.
Roxio can be difficult to completely remove. First go to the control panel and do the ususal add/remove routine. Then clean it up with the "Roxio Zapper". You can get the zip file from here: http://www.microadvantage.net/downloads/zapper60.zip .
While you say you have downloaded Nero, I hope you haven't installed it yet with Roxio still there. If you have, I would recommend you remove both programs, and then reinstall Nero.
The Sony upgrade makes a permanent instruction change to the drive's electronics...thus it is called firmware. I can't imagine how any other programs on your HDD could interfer with this change...so I would say it is safe to do it at any time.
