Microsoft used a PC with Nvidia to demo Xbox One games at E3, not dev kit

article published on 16 June, 2013

CinemaBlend has reported that Microsoft did not use a dev kit to demo its Xbox One games at E3, instead using high-end PCs. The console maker was using an HP built Windows 7 system with a Nvidia 700 series GTX GPU. Making that more notable, is the fact that the upcoming console will use a mid-range AMD GPU, a far cry away from the Nvidia used. It is also odd that the company did not ... [ read the full article ]

console demos running on pcs during E3 is nothing new.... its not to prove that PC is a superior but more to show how the game will look like on a console... and they rarely do..... they did the same with 360 at E3 when they ran demos on a power mac g5.... sony did the same with watch_dogs even ubi reps admitted it was running on pc...

Point is you cant build a PC for the same price of the equal quality, so ps4 is better for its value.

Comparing a £600+ PC to a £349 console is stupid the £600 PC would win.

Looks like you are building a helluva HTPC!...I mean SpyBox 1!
*EDIT* It'll never work unless you plug in the Kinect sensor, but I'm sure you knew that.
Doh!

:)

It's an absolutely fabulous rig... but alas, it is not mine but one I am building for a client. Every part in it is mint. A specialist cpu cooler for it just got delivered today. Maybe I'll post another pic later.

No, it's not really stupid at all comparing them. Neither are going to be as low as $349 at launch. Add $100-$150 to that for buying the console. Then add in your subscription fees for being online for a console.

Actually, the wireless controllers also work fine on PCs, although the wireless version will NOT work with XBCD (alternative driver that lets you redefine axes/buttons/deadzones, unlike the M$ driver). You just need the PC version of the receiver OR the same 360-to-PC adapter the wired controller uses.

Up until this generation, consoles actually outperformed otherwise "equivalent" (or even superior) PCs for gaming, because they were so specialized for the purpose. For instance, consoles generally had a *huge* data pipe between the graphics and VRAM. But now, that's changing, and you can actually run XBone games on a higher-end PC (obviously enough, from this story).

The XBone/PS4 ARE cheaper, but with the included limitations ? especially on the XBone ? may just not be worth it to many consumers. It's not very difficult to find a reasonably powerful system (laptop or desktop) that can play PC games at very similar specs, for not much more money and NO subscription fees (beyond your base internet costs, of course) for online play. In the bargain, you also get a rather open system that lets you do whatever you want, up to and including getting rid of the OS and installing another, as well as any of the additional functions the consoles offer.

Honestly, a decent HTPC/gaming PC appears to be a much better value for your gaming dollar, these days. That's what has changed; it used to be that the equation was skewed exactly the other way, and you got much more gaming "bang for your buck" by buying a console. But that's simply not true any more.

I have to agree. If you do not care about achieving 100+FPS at ultra high resolutions and just want a HTPC capable of playing games at 1080p/60FPS you can do it pretty reasonably. Sure it will be more than the console but like you mentioned it will not be as restrictive. Then as time progresses you can upgrade incrementally without sacrificing your game library. If this trend continues where MS and Sony release a new console that will only play new console games the cost savings is not really there since you need more devices taking up more space and power. So IMO unless you are really into an exclusive from that console maker it offers little incentive to follow that model.

I would be willing to put a 100.00 wager on you being wrong on that price you just wrote. You think the ps4 is going to run 500.00+ just for the console? No chance my friend.

The average joe may not be able to afford the price of a true top end pc despite the cost value. If person A only can afford 450.00 to 550.00 then that is all that they can afford no matter what.

Since you asked :)

- cpu: i5-3570K.
- mobo: Asrock Z77-Extreme4-M (no 4th gen mATX exist atm which can handle two large gfx cards).
- gfx: two Gigabyte GTX-780s 3GB DDR5 (these cards draw air from inside the case).
- ram: G.Skill Trident-X 8GB kit (2x4GB) 2400mhz 10-12-12-31.
- ssd: Samsung 840 PRO Series 128GB.
- hdd: Seagate Barracuda 3TB.
- odd: LG BluRay combo.
- psu: Antec HCG-900 160amps! 135m fan (cables severely modified for air flow).
- extra fans: two Noctua NF-R8s (shame they're so ugly).
- case: Silverstone GD05-USB3 (3 x 120mm fans for pos pressure).
- cpu: cooler Silverstone NT01-P (designed for this case, some minor case modding by me to greatly increase airflow over cooler fins).
- os: Win8 x64 (client's choice).
- project codename: Vortex

Note: Obviously it's not built for major OCing.

I'll post another pic later. (May even do a video breakdown.)
